I don't think UCF was one of first 4 best teams do you? I think 12th best was possibly generous and 7th for auburn definitely was too.
It's not perfect and we can't use other sports and take 25-50% of the league. Actually how does the FCS do it?

Even 8 teams would be only 6% of FBS. There's what, 60 or so P5 teams? 8 teams would still be only 13% even if you thought the G5 schools didn't belong.
I don't know who the best 4 teams were and neither did they. That's why you put a few more in the playoffs and let them fight it out. You don't have enough to go on when each team only plays 4 OOC games (maybe some only play 3 now) and one of those is likely against a FCS school and one probably against a low-level G5 school. Once you get into conference play you don't get any more information about how teams in different conferences would do against each other.
I think FCS has like 16 or 24 teams in their playoff.

8 teams would still mean UCF doesn't get in. Unless they mandate only conference champions can receive a spot.
Auburn defeated both Georgia and Alabama.

If they had been ranked at the beginning of the year it sure seems like they could have gotten in. Half of the SEC's strength is based on them having being good the year before.

They don't like to rank G5 teams before the season starts and on the rare ocassion when they do they usually stick them at at the bottom end or in the "receiving votes". But the playoff rankings don't come out until week 8 (?) and those are the rankings that matter.

That's exactly what I was thinking. They would do 5 champs, best G5 and 2 at large.

Only conference champions in the playoffs. How can you be number one in the nation when you are not even number one in your conference?

I guess we'll find out when saban crushes Georgia. Same scenario when urban won, with this 3rd string qb nonetheless.
