Could J.T. Barrett have played for Coach Carey?
J.T. Barrett was one of the most successful QBs in Ohio State football history but he threw 9 interceptions this year as he took some risks and Urban Meyer accepted those risks as an acceptable component of a potent and aggressive offense.
I believe that Coach Carey's biggest weakness is that he is very risk averse to the point of making his QBs play scared of making an occasional turnover. So I ask the NIU faithful ... could J.T. Barrett have played for Rod Carey or would he have been benched after his third or fourth pick?

Or how about Sam Darnold? Going to be top 3 pick and he had 13 ints.

Carey would play neither of these guys. Too many interceptions.
The only one on the team allowed to make mistakes is Carey.

If Carey got a 4 or 5 star QB recruit he would play them lol. Especially since Barrett and Darnold would destroy the MAC. They would probably have half the turnovers in the MAC if not more than half.

I am taking the question as this being a relative question. If NIU had a qb that could have produced the same type of numbers as Barrett and Darnold, in the MAC, would he have played them? Barrett had more good to great games than not, but he had some terrible games too. Carey wouldn't have kept him as the starter. Same with Huff.

Ok then let's go with 2 star recruit Luke Falk of WSU. He had 13 ints as well this season. The Point is those coaches realize and stick with who gives the offense best chance of making plays.

It's probably not that easy. Who was behind Falk? Maybe nobody. And Barret has the ability to run. If Santa had the potential to run for 1,000 yards, maybe Carey sticks it out through the ints.
Mostly santa was a victim of the scheme Carey wanted. He was wrong, but I'd have to imagine he thought Childers would get better not worse with each start. This offense is trash. I'd bet Huff, Tears, Blake and Wesley could have all thrived with Santa opening it up.

Carey would love Barrett. Good runner but not a talented passer. They don't throw much.
Urban will win a title within next two years now that Barrett graduated. He was holding them back from the big one.

What? Barrett just set a bunch of records for OSU and was basically the reason they got to the BIG championship game a few years ago and then got hurt. I don't like OSU but to say he was holding them back is crazy

He was common denominator in these past championship caliber teams that urban had. He only won when he got hurt. It's just one of those things you can't explain but i think its true. Haskins is much better and the OC will be able to open up offense more. Then schiano on D!

I agree with that. Great coaches would tweak a system to fit the better QB not go with the lesser QB just to fit the system IMO.

Carey was not using his eyes and brain, but rather his gut and his hopes when assessing Childers. He so wanted Childers to be his next Lynch he didn't realize Santa was probably his next Hare.

This is an interesting topic even though it's all speculation. A different and more relevant comparison is with Chandler Harnish. I am not calling Santa the next Harnish but do wonder about the comp. would Harnish have remained the starter as a freshman if Carey was coach? Depends on other options at qb. Heck even Kill went with Grady inexplicably several times. Harnish had 9 picks as a freshman. I have attached a link to his total stats.

Would Joe Novak play Sutton at DE? Would Jerry Kill put Huff at LB? Would Dave Doeren put DJ Brown under center? Makes you think.

Not bashing just having a sports conversation. This is like the old conversation of which Huskie team was best - 2003, 2012, 2013 or some other team. I specifically included that Harnish was second string behind Grady at different times. Kill moved Kube to linebacker which probably cost him a shot in the NFL. It's all speculative but interesting to think about.

Add Hornibrook (Wisconsin QB) to the list of quality QBs who struggled with INTs (15) but had a coach who stuck with him. Kid is lighting it up tonight.
