RE: Women's basketball 2017-18
Nice win for the women tonight over Detroit. A slow start and an early 17-8 deficit was turned around by halftime. Final was 82-74. Very balanced scoring with the most encouraging sign being our wings Golden and Poole scoring 32 between them. ThAt pretty much matches what we got out of Lurken and Golden last year. Obviously it was a bit more balanced with Golden getting 18 and Poole 14. Korinek was also in double figures(17)and Stephens had 22.

At this stage the bench doesn’t contribute very much. Cross had 3 fouls in the first half and it was obvious we miss Megan Carter. She’ll be back right after finals this semester (hopefully) and that will help. The other new players need some time. Hopefully one or two will figure it out soon. Tyra James at this stage appears to be somewhat hampered by a knee brace and also needs some time to get back to the player she was 2 years ago. If the bench can come around this team can be pretty good.

RE: Women's basketball 2017-18
The game was a good indication of where the team is right now. It was its best offensive game of the season; it has played better defense.

Kent had 18 assists on 28 baskets. Korinek and Cross made some nice passes to Stephens on backdoor cuts. Stephens 22 points was a career high.

Golden had a career-high 18 points, two three-pointers, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. We've called her a defensive specialist the last two years; she's much more than that.

Poole is much improved over last season, especially on defense.

As Burden said, they're not getting much bench scoring. James has potential. So does freshman Monique Smith, who played only a few minutes Thursday. Everything I hear says Megan Carter will be back for the Robert Morris game after final exams and that she's doing very well mentally and in practice.

Coach Todd Starkey liked his teams intensity in the second half but complained about fourth quarter turnovers. KSU led by 10 twice and let Detroit cut it to three.

Korinek had significant tightness in her hamstring and struggled in the first half. She missed her first six shots. She had been making 62 percent from the field.

Detroit is 0-6 but is one of the better winless teams I've ever seen. They've lost to teams with a combined 24-10 record.

RE: Women's basketball 2017-18
The women go back on the road to Eastern Kentucky, a team they beat in Kent last season.

The Flashes are 5-3; Eastern Kentucky is 2-4 with losses to Bowling Green, Akron and Ohio. One thing we'll be able to do with this game is compare how the Flashes did to other MAC teams. BG and Ohio have winning records. Akron is 3-3.

EKU has only one starter back from a team that was 12-18 last season. The Colonels' best player looks to be A’Queen Hayes, a junior guard transfer from Mississippi, where she was on the SEC's all-freshman team. She's averaging 14 points and 6 rebounds.

Kent State continues to be led by senior Jordan Korinek, who is now up to 1,301 points in her career at Kent State. The Flashes almost have four players averaging in double figures. Besides Korinek, Ali Poole and McKenna Stephens average just over 10 and Alexa Golden 9.4.

Full preview is on the blog at http://wbbflashes.com.

The game starts at 7. You can get video through the EKU website or a link on the blog.

RE: Women's basketball 2017-18
Naddiyah Cross hit a three-point shot at the end of regulation, and Kent State outscored Eastern Kentucky 9-0 to start overtime in a 65-57 victory.

Cross had a career-high 19 points; she had been averaging five.

Merissa Barber-Smith, the 6-4 junior center, had 15 rebounds, nine points and four blocked shots in 25 minutes. All those were career highs. She was playing so much because leading scorer Jordan Korinek fouled out after playing just 21 minutes and scoring 10 points. Both tied season lows. Korinek had been averaging 21 points.

Kent State trailed by eight points with 4:40 to go but outscored EKU 25-8 the rest of the game.

Other than a good second quarter and those last 10 minutes, Kent State did not play well. If Eastern Kentucky hadn't missed five of eight foul shots in the last two minutes, it never would have got to overtime.

Kent State is now 6-3 and has won four games in a row. Eastern Kentucky is 2-5.

The Flashes play their second and last home non-conference game Thursday against 6-2 Wright State. Game starts at 7 p.m. at the MACC.

Full story, with good quotes from Cross, Barber-Smith and coach Todd Starkey, is on the blog at http://wbbflashes.com.

Starkey is a really good game coach and, from next year's incoming class, looks like a good recruiter.

RE: Women's basketball 2017-18
Kent fans get their last chance to see the women's team in person Thursday when they host Wright State at the MACC. Game starts at 7.

Wright State will be a big challenge. The Raiders are 6-2 and ranked No. 23 in this week's Mid-Major Poll. Last season they were 25-9, with one of the losses being to Kent State at home.

The Flashes (6-3) have yet to beat a team of Wright State's caliber. At home they should have a chance. At least we'll learn how good they really are.

RE: Women's basketball 2017-18
Wright State, ranked 23rd among mid-major women's teams, jumped to a 26-17 first quarter lead and beat Kent State 72-60 at the M.A.C. Center Thursday.

The Flashes drop to 6-4 on the season. Wright State is 7-2.

Chelsea Welch, the Horizon League preseason player of the year, had 26 points and five assists for Wright State. Jordan Korinek led Kent State with 22 points. Alexa Golden had 13 and McKenna Stephens 10.

KSU coach Todd Starkey, in a postgame interview, said Wright State was "just a better team." He said the game was pretty much consistent with the Flashes' season so far -- an inconsistent effort, too many turnovers, some good play at times but not enough to beat a good team.

Korinek had 22 but could of had 32. She missed a bunch of easy ones. However the main problem was defense. I hate to say it but Wright St was just too quick for us. They only got 2 points from the bench but that’s all they needed.

Another thing that I noticed is although the wings are getting their points no one is going to the bucket ala Lurkin last year. That will catch up with them when we get into the MAC where teams will spend significantly more time scouting us. Tyra James might help that if she can get back into the groove. We’ll see soon.

RE: Women's basketball 2017-18
The women travel to Ann Arbor Sunday afternoon for their fifth game against a top opponent this season. So far they haven’t won any of them.

The Flashes are 6-4 with wins against teams with a combined 5-39 record. They’ve lost to No. 18 Stanford and three teams in the Mid-Major Top 25. In each of the losses, KSU has played its opponent evenly for at least two quarters. But the Flashes eventually lost each by double digits.

KSU played Michigan more than evenly in the second half in March, when it lost to the Wolverines in the first round of the WNIT. The Flashes fell behind by 21 at halftime, then outscored Michigan 38-24 in the second half, dominating in every phase of the game. Michigan went on to win the WNIT championship.

This year’s Michigan team is just as good. The Wolverines are ranked No. 24 in the latest women’s poll with a 7-2 record. Loses have been to No. 3 Notre Dame and Nov. 4 Louisville, though Michigan has only beaten one team with a winning record.

RE: Women's basketball 2017-18
Kent State held Michigan’s all-time leading scorer to the second-lowest point total of her career and Michigan to its lowest total at home in two years.

But the Wolverines played good defense of their own, forcing 21 Kent State turnovers and beating the Flashes, 54-41.

Michigan, ranked No. 24 in the country in last week’s AP poll, is 8-2.

Kent State is 6-5. The Flashes have lost to two teams in the top 25 and three in the Mid-Major Top 25.

KSU led 15-5 after the first quarter and was tied 19-19 at halftime. A box-and-one defense led by point guard Naddiyah Cross kept Michigan’s Katelynn Flaherty, who has scored more than 2,200 points in her career, in check.

Alexa Golden led Kent State with 15 points; Jordan Korinek had 10.

RE: Women's basketball 2017-18
The Kent State women play their final non-conference game of the year Tuesday morning at Robert Morris.

Flashes are 6-5; Robert Morris is 7-3. But neither team has beaten an opponent with a winning record. Robert Morris beat KSU 68-65 in overtime last season at the MACC.

It's an important test for KSU; the Flashes are going to have to beat teams like Robert Morris to compete in the MAC.

Two KSU players graduated Saturday, though both remain on the roster and will play as graduate students. They are guard Alexa Golden, who went through her undergraduate studies in two-and-a-half years, and guard Naddiyah Cross, who graduated a semester ahead of much of her class. They'll join another grad student, McKenna Stephens, who graduated last May, on the team.

The game starts at 10 a.m. and is part of a career day for high school students at Robert Morris. Full preview is on the blog at http://wbbflashes.com.

The women played a real barn burner this morning scoring a total of 46 points. The good news is they won by 15. Glad I didn’t decide to drive to Pittsburgh for that one.

RE: Women's basketball 2017-18
Kent State played best perhaps its defensive game in two decades Tuesday as it defeated Robert Morris, 46-31.

It was the lowest point total for a KSU opponent since 1996.

The Flashes finish their non-conference season with a 7-5 record. Robert Morris, defending Northeastern Conference champions and a team that beat KSU in Kent last season, is 7-4.

Jordan Korinek led Kent State with 17 points. Ali Poole had 11 and a career-high eight rebounds.

KSU committed 25 turnovers in the game and missed eight foul shots in the first half. But the Flashes held Robert Morris to 25 percent shooting and 2 of 19 on three-point shots. The Colonials had averaged 62.5 points a game, 41.3 percent shooting and 35 percent on three-pointers.

The Flashes now break for Christmas and will open the Mid-American Conference season on Saturday, Dec. 30, at Eastern Michigan.

The women's team is playing well. Without a monster like Ball State in the East there is no reason to think KSU can't challenge for the crown.

Ball St has a 30 RPI and Buffalo is at 40. Kent at 185 is currently only ahead of Akron and EMU. I know it’s still a bit early but Kent still has to prove it can be competitive even in the East.

RE: Women's basketball 2017-18
The reason KSU's RPI is so low is that it's beaten only one team with a winning record -- only two that have won more than three games.

The teams it has lost to are quite good -- two in the top 25 and three in the mid-major top 25.

That's why I think the Robert Morris win was an important won; they dominated a team picked to win its conference on the road.

But like last season, they'll have to prove they're MAC contenders on the court. Remember they were 6-6 non-conference last season and lost their first two MAC games.

I recap the non-conference season and how those opponents are doing on the blog at http://wbbflashes.com.

Even with all the good teams we have played our SOS is still only 266. The bad teams were really bad to make that happen. With most of the non conference games done we are pretty much stuck with that. The good news is the MAC is currently ranked 8th in the country so if we are successful in Conference play we should improve quickly. Historically, 8th is pretty good for the MAC.
