They can then fill in other slots with Liberty, Army, NM ST, and BYU while waiting for a conference opening. Add a couple of money games, some old MAC partners, and some local P5 schools that will play them in Gillette for their half of home and home scheduling and UMASS could go on indefinitely as an independent if it can't get into a conference for football in the near future. 07-coffee3

What do we gain from that?
Nothing that I can see. Throw in a BBall scheduling agreement (a la the MAC agreements with Temple & UMass) ... and it's still no clear gain, since the AAC teams can get those games if they want.

Throwing some basketball games in would help too and also some other Olympic sports to cut travel. It would help the NE and Mid Atlantic AAC schools with heavy travel costs to Florida and Texas. UConn and Temple are already scheduling UMASS for football. The tie in might help Navy, Cinn, and even ECU too. Of course UMASS gets the major gain in this deal but the AAC gets a look at UMASS and its commitment to facilities upgrades for the next round of realignment when the current GOR's expires down the road. It is more of a win for UMASS but I was looking at this more from the UMASS side anyway to stay relevant until a conference picks them up and the AAC seems to be their target conference of choice. 07-coffee3

Sorry, but I don't count UMASS in the stats of the bowl game drought since they were FCS for quite some time.

Change the title to Kansas now takes over the longest drought in bowl games.

No, that would be the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs, or Atlanta Braves

Why would you count their I-AA/FCS years as part of this "drought" when they wouldn't be eligible for those games?

Using that logic, Washington & Jefferson hasn't been to a bowl since the 1922 Rose Bowl. That's nearly 100 years!

To be far, UMass. never dropped down a level in all sports. D1 is still D1 for all sports. 1964, there was no FBS/FCS. Some of the lower end bowls like The Tangerine/Citrus were for schools at the University level (Umass.) Vs College level (East Carolina). The history of many of these bowl games including the defunct ones are associated with the Big Boys.

UMASS was college level in 1964.

How when Vermont and some of the others that made the men's basketball tournament in the 1960s? You can't have college and universities schools in the same conference. As I checked, UMass made the D1 university men's basketball tournaments against UCLA and them back in the 1960s? Then, UCLA and them a College level school and not University?

I don't understand your point. UMass was FCS so we wouldn't be able to go to bowls. Basketball has nothing to do with anything.

You are mistaken. In the early days of the federated system I II III and before that with University, College Division I and College Division II it was not unusual for a conference to be Division I or University in football and Division II/College Division in basketball or vice versa.
The Southland 1971-1974 was Division I in basketball and Division II in football. The decision to move football to Division I was the reason Abilene and Trinity left and the league expanded into Louisiana.
The Citrus took exclusively lower division teams 1947 to 1967.
You have to be careful looking at anything prior 1993 when schools were required to play football and hoops in the same division and prior to 1978 when I-A and I-AA were created and anything before 1971 when the federated system was adopted warrants extreme caution because you can’t make assumptions about one sport based on another

Further, if we are going to count UMass's FCS days, then it's not "bowl game drought", but rather "post season play drought", and getting into one or more of the post-season games they were playing to get into when in the FCS have to count as "non drought" years.

Yet again? My goodness, what were the odds?

Anyway, thanks for the detailed information why DavidSt. was mistaken on that point.
