Cornell entered the game with an RPI in the 120s (it's in the 60s now) and Duquesne was in the 280s (now 300s) so even factoring in home-court advantage, I'd be hard-pressed to call it an upset.

too early to really use RPI's.

In KP they were Cornell 242 and Duquesne 247. KP had Duquesne favored by 3.

not a good night for the state of Wisconsin. It took Marquette OT to beat Eastern Illinois, and Wisconsin has 34 points with 2 minutes to go vs UVA.

Also not good for the Big Ten. Wisconsin losing would put them 0-2 in the ACC/Big Ten challenge, and of the 12 remaining matchups- while favored in 6 matchups- 2 of the Big Ten favorites are only in the 50-60% range. It could get to be a 10-4 bloodbath for the Big Ten real easily.

A10 with a 39-40 record now. Only 5 2 loss teams left(no 0-1 loss teams)- and of those 5- 3 are underdogs next game, and 1 could easily lose as well(RI to Providence).

think the story of the season so far is how bad the A10 has done.

It's not a score (yet at least), but Miami's opponent tonight is kinda laughable: Midway University, an NAIA school in the second year of program history as the college only started admitting men last year.

It will no doubt be a blowout. But here's the backstory on NAIA DII Midway: There was an NAIA DI school in the Mid-South conference called St Catherine's (KY) that ran into funding difficulty when the Education Department under the Obama administration accused them of poor performance amid reviews of for-profit schools - St Catherine's is nonprofit - and cut off federal grants and loans. The charges were without foundation and nothing else came of it, except St Catherine's went bankrupt in the meantime. They got royally screwed.

In steps Midway, who were already planning to go coed and add men's athletics in a year or so anyway, and they offered nearly the entire men's athletics department - coaches and athletes - spots at Midway. The only sport that didn't migrate was wrestling, which ended up at Bellarmine under similar arrangements.

So it may appear that this is a brand new program, but it has roots in another existing program. It's ended up being a really great thing for everyone. You can feel good about rooting for this David against Goliath.

I actually am not too surprised. I think you're going to see some hangover type of games from teams who played in the PK80 tourney. That was so unusually intense.

Also, Columbia has had some close games this year vs pretty good teams....
Nova 15 points
Penn St 14 points

at the end of the day in the RPI it'll look the same.

That may be true for some teams but when you lose the final two games by 20 and 35 points, I don't consider it all that intense. Also Columbia losing a couple of games by 15 and 14 points is a lot different than losing a game you were winning nearly wire to wire, at times by double digits. It may look the same in the RPI but to anybody with an objective eye it looks like a bad basketball team.

A10 hits keep on coming.

The A10 was due to have a down year because of coaching changes, player graduations, etc. Unfortunately URI, St. Bonaventure and St. Joe’s have all had their top player injured and those schools were numbers 1 - 3 in the pre-season conference poll. It’s really been the perfect storm of bad luck for the A10. The absence of the stability that Xavier and Temple provided is catching up with the A10 as well.

Regarding UMass, they lost seven (I think) players from last year’s team. They were picked 11th in the pre-season poll. The loss to Quinnipiac isn’t too surprising. The Minutemen are a bad and very inexperienced team.

Quinnipiac finished 8th in the MAAC last year. They were projected to finish last in the MAAC this year. This was an upset.

The conference just is not that good.

And UMass turned down the MAC because they thought it was beneath their basketball program...

I fully expect the A10 to be a one bid conference. I thought they would have been a two bid conference before the injury bug hit the top teams in the conference. The A10 is so bad this year that LaSalle may do something they’ve never done in the 22 years they’ve been in the conference. They might actually win it.
