RE: 2017 ODU Football Season Recap
This season was always going to come down to QB play and it pretty much sucked all year long. The injuries didn't help, but maybe completely healthy, we win another game or so. With good QB play, this team wins 8 games at least.

The positive is Williams clearly has potential and grew as the season goes along. Now, we have to figure out how to replace Lawry and add another playmaker or 2 at WR.

They did. It didnt work.

Not trying to be a smartass, but exactly what adjustment(s) did we make?

I honestly didn't see anything other than some apparent stunts that seemed to be designed to pressure the QB in passing situations.

To be honest, I don't think people understand what they see. They don't really study what the offense and defense does and when you only watch the game live, you really can't judge what the schemes are.

The defense tried a few different blitz combinations and also played some man press (got torched here). The goal was certainly to slow down the pass with 6 defensive backs, but the tempo MTSU played (common theme) affected the ability to disguise coverages.

I think the task of replacing Lawry is off to a good start with Cox and Sinclair. Harper and Duhart give us a good start at WR (I think Harper is an undergrad)

Isn't depth supposed to be the antidote to injury? Hope we have sufficient depth because injuries will always be with us.

I'm not sold on Cox. The gap between Lawry and Cox is huge. At times this year, Cox looked lost on blocking assignments. Ray and Cox made a good one-two punch together over the years when both were healthy. I just don't think Cox has what it takes to be the main back for us. Sinclair and Jackson have my interest, but there is something lacking with Jackson right now.

Sinclair looked very strong, albeit very few carries.

Hopefully Duhart comes back and is healthy. We will have a lot of experience at the position and I'm keeping an eye out for progress from Todd, Colbert, and incoming Mayo.

Yes, exactly.

However, it was the run (320 yards) that we needed to adjust to, indeed should have planned for as well as the pass, and I saw no indication of such an effort.

Additionally, other than the stunts and blitzes, I saw no effort to come off the soft zone; such that MTSU torched us underneath with the pass as well as the run.

Would love to see us snare a FBS ready WR, LB and CB transfer.

I agree. We were a completely different team with Cox vs Ray. I think Cox was a nice compliment to Ray, but I am not sold on him as the go to back.

Cox is more of a workhorse. He's a solid back. Lawry is a first team all CUSA type game changing back.

Cox will be adequate if we find some playmakers at WR. But, I wouldn't be surprised to see Sinclair get a lot of time.

The good thing about Cox, unlike Lawry, is he can move around and be split out wide.

Despite the loss of Ray, I feel like our O will be better next year with an improved line and Williams having the full off-season as QB1. Just need all our guys to stay away from The Edge.

And actually hit all of their offseason workout targets and making meetings on time would be nice too.

MTSU didn't really play at a fast tempo. Had they gone on and snapped the ball after coming right up to the line then they would have played at a fast tempo, but they didn't do that. Instead they used most of their allotted time before getting the next play off.

After coming up to the line they would act as if they were going to snap it which forced ODU to get into position, then turn and face the team bench for the next 10-15 seconds to get the play call from the sideline. ODU had that same 10-15 seconds to shift into a different defense had they desired. MTSU accomplished what they wanted by doing all of that. Their coaches up in the press box got to see the positioning of the defense before making their offensive play call since ODU never shifted out of their initial position, and they kept ODU from making defensive substitutions because the threat of a quick snap was always there even though it was seldom if ever used.

They had just come off of a 10-3 season with most of the starters returning. Now ODU is coming off of a 5-7 season with most of the starters returning. Are the guys returning better than the 5-7 record that they just achieved, or can we expect to see the same players miss tackles and drop passes like they did this season? Injuries are always going to happen so we can count on having our fair share of those again next season too. Should we be more optimistic about next season than we were this season since we have a sophomore QB this time around? What if he is the one that gets injured?

Hopefully SW gets a lot of sleep in the next 7 months and can make it to all the offseason practices on time! 05-stirthepot

You aren't winning anything without a QB. If Williams plays well next year, we will compete for the conference. If he sucks, we won't. Thats the nature of QB play at this level. (Unless you have an absolute stacked roster, which doesn't happen often).

We were all told how mature he was too. Heinicke played as a freshman and I don't recall him being held out because he was late for any meetings. Guess he must have been super mature.

Yeah, that all pretty much goes without saying.

Edit: Just one thing to add though ... Williams wasn't the first choice to start this season. In fact he wasn't even the second choice. He fell into it after the play of the first two were observed. Who is to say that some new face won't surpass Williams for one reason or another next season?

Williams is like every freshman. He came in expecting to redshirt. But, even before practice started people in program said he was best QB. I remember being shocked on here to read it.

If someone beats out Williams next year, they are probably really good. Thats a good problem.
