Davidson (Tuesday, 7 PM)
Picked by the A-10 coaches to finish 6th in a competitive league, early results suggest that might be a conservative bet for Davidson this season, as they hit the ground running to start the 2017-18 campaign.

In a 106-55 exhibition win over Hampden-Sydney, the Wildcats went 16-36 from the perimeter and shot 51.4 % overall from the field. Freshman guard Kellan Grady and Senior forward Peyton Aldridge combined for 52 points in the contest.

But ho hum, right? This was a D-III opponent after all.

As it turns out, Davidson had even more in store for their first D-I foe, Charleston Southern. The Wildcats knocked down 26 threes in this one, accounting for 74 % of their total made shots, en route to a 110-62 trouncing. Davidson was led in scoring by Icelandic Sophomore guard Jon Axel Gudmundsson, who finished with 24 points, including 5-8 from 3. Grady and Aldridge had 23 and 18 points, respectively, while Senior forward Oskar Michelsen added 18 as well.

While we're a much tougher foe for Davidson than Hampden-Sydney and Charleston Southern, this is a very difficult road test in the early going of the regular season. Davidson's Bob McKillop has 28 years of head coaching experience under his belt, whereas C.B. McGrath is about to make his head coaching debut against D-I competition. Between talent pedigree, coaching, and home court, Davidson certainly has the advantage on paper.

However, this also provides the Seahawks with a big opportunity. Last season, the biggest non-conference win was a road victory against another A-10 foe in Saint Bonaventure. Tuesday's matchup presents another chance at an early "signature win". It also gives Coach McGrath a chance to see where the most significant improvements need to come from in the early going.

Buffalo Wild Wings will be streaming the game per the coach's show today

Here is a link to the stream of the game:
http://www.atlantic10.com/mediaPortal/pl...m_id=31600

It is also available on the Atlantic 10 phone app which can be used to watch on a regular TV via screen mirroring or casting.

I am unsure if there is a cost to stream the game. I looked at some of the A10 stuff this weekend. Some of it was free and some of it was behind a paywall. If it is behind a paywall, the 24 hour pass is listed at $6.95.

The way Davidson has been lighting in up, I frankly thought it would be a slightly bigger point spread.

On the other hand, should the Seahawks go to their court and win at this stage of our team's development it would really open some eyes for sure.

I'm hesitant to go back to our days of "moral victories" during the regular season, but as long as we keep this within single digits I'm happy. A win, and I'd be ecstatic. It's all about realistic expectations this year.

Growth my man, growth! I hope to see this team improve as the year goes on.

RE: Davidson (Tuesday, 7 PM)
We're going to get up and down the court under McGrath. Not sure how this bodes against Davidson. I'd like to see us pound the ball to Cacock and get the pace to the point their shooters are tired and the 3 pointer doesn't have as much value. I'd also like to see some press so they don't have full shot clocks to set up for the 3.

They hit a ridiculous % from 3, and I hope they can't match that with us. Also, it looks like they have the all foreign international team on their roster.

Doesn't seem like the kind of team we want to trade buckets with, for sure. I do think our defense will come to play, because defense should always travel. Sure, we gave up 80+ to a D-III school, but let's face it, even if that game counted as a regular season game for us, do you think the team played it that way? They were having fun out there in a game they knew they'd win by 20+.

And what's more, Coach McGrath used the entire bench. I think we'll use 9 guys rather than 11 on Tuesday night.

Seahawks Visit Davidson For Road Opener

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Three days after opening the 2017-18 season with a lopsided win over NCAA Division II N.C. Wesleyan, UNCW embarks on its road schedule Tuesday night against Atlantic-10 member Davidson at John M. Belk Arena.

The Seahawks, two-time defending champions in the Colonial Athletic Association, return to Belk Arena for the first time since 2014 to renew the series with the Wildcats.

"Coach McKillop has been at it a long time," said UNCW first-year head coach C.B. McGrath. "He does a great job and they know what to do. They run their stuff and you have to be prepared to play them or they're going to make you look bad.

"It's going to be tough. We're playing on the road for the first time. Their crowd will be into it and they'll have their students there. We just have to execute our game plan."

UNCW started the McGrath Era in strong fashion last Saturday, placing three men in double figures and cruising past the Battling Bishops, 105-81, before 4,663 fans at Trask Coliseum. Senior playmaker Jordon Talley pumped in a career-high 24 points to anchor three players in double figures, while the Seahawks shot 50 percent overall.

Junior forward Devontae Cacok added 21 points and 16 rebounds and became the school's all-time dunk leader with four slams in the contest. The Riverdale, Ga., product now has 95 in his three-year career in the Port City.

The Seahawks are opening the season with three consecutive games against North Carolina opponents. Following the clash with the Wildcats, UNCW returns home to entertain Campbell on Saturday for a 7 p.m. tip-off.

Davidson also stands 1-0 after steamrolling Charleston Southern, 110-62, in its season debut last Friday at Belk Arena. Sophomore guard Jon Axel Gudmundsson poured in 24 points and the three-happy Wildcats fired in 26-of-53 three-pointers.

"All five guys on the court can shoot three's," McGrath said of the Wildcats. "We have to make sure we change our mentality. We have to try to pressure them out of what they do. You're not going to stop them from shooting three's. We have to get them out of their rhythm and make them shoot three's where they're not accustomed to shooting them with our defensive game plan."

UNCW and Davidson are meeting for the 10th time since the series began on Dec. 28, 1987. The Seahawks won the first four games in the series, but the Wildcats have won four of the last five pairings, including three in a row.

In the last meeting on Nov. 29, 2014, Davidson held UNCW to 30.4 percent shooting and forced 20 turnovers in a decisive 72-49 win. Peyton Aldridge, now a senior for the Wildcats, scored 17 points to lead McKillop's club.

The Seahawks are making their sixth appearance at Belk Arena and own a 2-3 mark on Davidson's home floor. UNCW has dropped three straight at Belk Arena since former UNCW center Matt Fish scored 18 points and snared 10 rebounds in a 71-68 victory on Feb. 3, 1992.

Davidson is the lone Atlantic-10 opponent for the Seahawks in 2017-18. UNCW stands 72-96 against A-10 schools, but beat St. Bonaventure in Olean, N.Y., last season in UNCW's last game against the league.

Live Seahawk Digital Network (SDN) coverage of the UNCW-Davidson contest begins at 6:45 p.m. with Mike Vaccaro, the "Voice of the Seahawks." Visit UNCWsports.com/SDN for live audio coverage. In addition, a radio broadcast of the game can be heard on "The Ticket" 95.9 FM and WKXB (99.9 FM-HD3).

Almost all of it in one season...and he has two full seasons left. He could end with well over 200 for his career.

Sounds about right. In order to win this one, or even keep it close, in a tough environment and against an experienced coach, we'll need to both "out-talent" AND outplay them.

If we can be mentally tough enough to keep this in single digits AND pass the "eye test", I think we can all feel very good about this team's chances in the CAA.

I tried to find a dunks "category" for the NCAA and couldn't find one. It may exist, but i'm not sure where.
