I think they were able to recover from the Cincy heartbreaker. But the BG one was too much.

I wouldn't call it a heartbreaker from the player's point of view, I'd call it coaching malpractice. They could get over the Marshall loss, they're a good team and even if poor coaching was to blame regarding the INT and kick returns you can get over it. They could kinda get over UC, the next week after all we blew the doors off of CMU. But getting absolutely slaughtered by Notre Dame really hit them hard imo, and as BG kept gutting our D last week the players started to lose all confidence in the staff. Martin has always talked a big game, but when you can no longer blame the lack of talent from the Treadwell years and aren't willing to blame yourself for losing to an awful team, the house of cards starts falling down.

I'm pretty sure he won't be fired this week however. The earliest he'll be let go is November 1st, the day after the OU game. If we lose to UB and OU by that point we'd have seven losses to officially put us out of a bowl and he'd fall to 0-10 against our rivals under him. His buyout is $450k with him having just one year left on his contract, it's not chump change but at least we didn't extend him three years or something after last season.

The situation isn't as dire as 2013, we have a ton of talent returning and the best facilities in the MAC. We could very well bounce back next season with the proper changes in the coaching staff. But we need to send a message that incompetence on this level is unacceptable, probably after the OU game as mentioned above.

Does it make more sense to give Martin a 5th year as he's upgrading recruiting rapidly with the new facilities but make 2018 make or break?

After all it was a total rebuild job in Oxford.

RE: 2017 MAC Football Pick 'Em -- Week 7
Martin has a year left on his contract, if we keep him we'd have to extend him or face a lame duck fiasco like we did with Coop for basketball. We have enough talent returning that we can win right away with a good coach, and I don't want to squander that on an incompetent staff. He deserves credit for the recruiting, but something tells me that his pitch to recruits this fall will start falling on deaf ears as the results on the field don't match up to all his talk.

Kind of hard to argue that BG and KSU are the worst teams in the league. The question is, is there a worse program than Miami? Doesn’t appear to be.

I’m going to start using a dart board for pick-ems because pretty much the conference sucks from top to bottom this year and it’s annoying...

Except for Toledo 03-wink

Sucks to be you guys then. If/when you win the MAC, all you'll get is 'well the MAC was awful this year.' Been there, done that last year with Western Michigan. (Even though you guys were pretty dang good last year too)

WMU looked like they were out late last night in the first half.

Some real curious play calling by Bronco staff. I guess we're not interested in defending our title. Behind the eight ball now. 03-banghead

Coach had better own this loss. Terrible coaching job.

That was strange. Even attempting a possible 70 yard FG at the end, even with the wind at you back, was crazy......

WMU went for the 1st down in the 3rd Quarter with 4th and 3 and failed vs. taking a FG while only down 14-3.

And then, in the same quarter, on 4th and 2 on the Akron 34, they elect to punt?? Instead of trying a FG??

Cost them the game right there....

The wind was a real factor in the game. 20+ mph gusts and WMU was facing into it in the 3rd quarter.

maybe not a fg situation but punting inside the 40 is deadly. the analytics are overwhelming. 4th and short on the opponent's side of the field you must go for it. inside the 40 and punting on 4th and short dramatically lowers your chance of winning. see far more MAC coaches make this call than P5 guys.

another thing that really bugs me is all the MAC coaches who punt or run the clock out around midfield right before halftime. the right call in that situation is almost always the hail mary. so much can go wrong with a punt and there is no positive outcome. send 3 guys deep, have 7 protect and heave it into the end zone. there's a decent chance of scoring and I've yet to see a team give up points throwing an end of half hail mary.
