Kill? I'm not so sure, go back and look at those teams.
Jordon Lynch made Doeren look like a genius.
That could be partly true, but Doeren proved his value over and over and over, just a phenomenal coach. Never have seen a better coach at NIU with in-game adjustments. The one part of the job Doeren sucked at was media relations, he is as brutal as Carey in that part of it.
I think a lot of you don't really understand that this is Rod's first head coaching gig, AND he has been given the keys to a friggin' Mid-American Conference Bentley. When he was hired, he had no HC experience and was Co-Offensive Coordinator for a year. While there hasn't been a growth in the W-L column from when he was hired, there has been a noticeable growth in his coaching abilities/awareness/identity. I like the guy. He hasn't proven that he's the best coach, but he certainly isn't an a**hat coach like Charlie Weis or Rich Rodriguez. It's his program, and that's a good thing. Ask any other college HC and they'll agree. ALLOW HIM TO CONTINUE TO GROW.
I don't think there is any question Carey suffers from low confidence at times in himself and the players he puts out there, maybe he is starting to overcome that, but NIU has given games away due to his coaching, that is not up for debate. NIU is a well coached team defensively, no one can question that, it is a Lynch-less Carey offense I think which is what concerns everyone. For him to be successful and be known as a great coach, he has to take the training wheels off the offense. You can't be a consistent winner with this offensive coaching philosophy. It is kind of interesting that our basketball coach Montgomery essentially is in the same boat, can Montgomery start to value offense and realize that it is also important. Both these coaches remind me so much of Lovie Smith, let defense do the job, don't expect anything from offense other than the "don't do stupid things" philosophy. It can work but the margin of error is soooooooooooo small, that it is almost impossible to win consistently.
It is good to recall Rod came in with little experience, that's not on him. Think back, 5 years ago, we all wanted some stability with the HC, and well, we got it. But Carey's learning curve is the price we paid for that stability. I'd stop there and say that frames my thinking.
Last thought - let's say we go 8-4, go crazy and say 9-3, would you see Rod getting interest from the bigger programs who need a coach?

Who knows if Rod interviews well? I'd imagine he does not rock ADs and presidents socks, otherwise we would have heard more buzz earlier. After last year's 5-7, he would need to be successful this year and back it up next year to get a shot at more money, more exposure, more press, and more resources.

RE: FIRE CAREY!!!
It is amazing the huge amount of expertise is in this particular conversation...recruiting, coaching, hiring coaches, play calling, officiating, talent evaluation....by people like me with some or no experience in any of those areas.
Fire Carey? I say we should be lucky to have retained Carey...programs like NIU have two things happen...the coach is successful and moves on eg PJ Fleck or he is bad and is let go. Is he another Nick Saban? Of course not! Is he a good coach? The program is doing pretty well so I say he's doing all right.
A program like NIU's replaces assistant coaches like a fast food restaurant replaces workers. He has managed to bring in replacement coaches that have helped maintain success...a head coach is only as good as the people he surrounds himself with. I give him a solid B in his efforts here.
How many MAC and other group of 5 programs would like to have had NIUs record since Joe Novak was hired? I'd say a hell of a lot of them.
So you want to become a Power 5 school? what is needed? lots and lots of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Wonder how Oklahoma State got to this point this season? T Boone Pickens and his several millions of dollars that he has donated to the program in recent years.

Current events make that seem so remote, not really complaining, but, we know what the teams will be like with Carey. Middle of the road and slightly better than MAC average teams. Not as good as the Kill/Doeren years. Kill and Doeren went on to much bigger programs and big money, I just don't see Carey being in demand like that, meaning no one else sees high value in him.

Doeren rode the coattails of Coach Kill. He hasn't had a winning conference record at NC State yet.
Year Overall Conference
2013 3 - 9 0 - 8
2014 8 - 5 3 - 5
2015 7 - 6 3 - 5
2016 7 - 6 3 - 5
2017 2 - 1 0 - 0

RE: FIRE CAREY!!!
There's a thread on the AAC board saying we should get an invite after spanking Nebraska haha
To be fair though, I hang out a lot over there and they love me (it's reciprocated)

For NC State standards, what Doeren has done has been pretty darn good with staying competitive. Also, you do realize that NC State is in the same division of the ACC at Clemson, FSU, and Louisville right? ANY P5 school comparable to NC State would go 0-3 against those teams year in and year out.
But yeah, Doeren rode the coattails of Kill.

Hey, DD is 5–1 in his career in bowls/title games. I’m told that’s all that matters

I've had a "man-crush" on DD ever since the comeback from a 20-0 halftime deficit in the 2011 MACC.
Is it wrong?

I've been the same way since we won the MACC both years he was here. After, shall we say, a bit of a dry spell on that score.

RE: FIRE CAREY!!!
Rod Carey is so respected that it leads schools like Nebraska to fire their ADs. Nebraska board of trustees must have said we just lost to a team that lost to Boston College and had a losing record last year.

If NIU beats SDSU, that might start to sway some Carey doubters.
Has NIU ever won on the road against a team ranked in both Coaches and AP?

We haven't beaten a west coast team since Fresno. It would be Huge!
