I understand that the '13 Master plan is pretty much useless now. I wonder if they have a new one sketched up or if they are simply shooting from the hip.

To me it would make sense for them to have a new 5 year plan every 5 years. Crazy concept! So I'm hoping we get to see a new one next year? That's pretty hopeful of me though, admittedly.

Talked to a civil engineer grad student. Apparently he has seen the (a) modified master plan that the University is working with right now. Said there is a new plan in the works. Gave me 0 additional information :(

At least they are not just blindly placing buildings on campus.

ODU Master Plan
They need to release the new master plan. Hard to believe it's almost been 5 years since the last one

Is construction pretty quiet other than the art museum?

The child center is also going up. Saw activity yesterday. I can go by and check it out.

Up until last week it's just been a concrete slab and the PVC / plumbing fittings. Not sure how long it takes for that type of foundation to cure before they can start to build. I think it's been a month+ with no activity until yesterday.

RE: ODU Master Plan
Just rode past the new child study center construction site.

Looks like yesterday a bunch of cinder blocks and metal framing got dropped off.
They also have part of the road and the grass outside of the construction area all dug up. Connecting to the water main perhaps?

As far as I know, there is no new buildings going up.

The old education building (They gotta rename that) is still under renovation.
A bunch of classrooms and other spaces are being converted to lounges / meeting areas for different student groups. I'm apart of the Student Veterans Association and they have some nice space set aside for them.

Also in that building a 6,000 sq ft maker space is being put in.

I don't know what other improvements are going on inside that building.

And the typical building maintenance is going on around campus. Seems like new roofs are being installed in a few places? simply guessing however.

RE: ODU Master Plan
The renovation to the Old Education Building bids in about 45mins. During the pre-bid meeting for this project, it was said that the new tenants would be from Webb Center. When they move out of Webb, then the renovation to Webb will begin. It is very doubtful that a new Webb Center will built anytime soon, but Webb will receive a major renovation, in phases.

Thats a major disappointment. I thought the new Webb Center was already approved, budgeted for and in the works. Webb's interior looks awful now, and I just assumed it was for the same reason the football stadium does. Not reinvesting in something being torn down. Figured the new Webb and the stadium would be going up about the same time. :(

RE: ODU Master Plan
Will this major renovation include tearing down large parts of Webb? Because I though that was the whole point of the project. More room needs to be made for additional academic buildings now occupied by parts of Webb. And therefore the whole building will have to be replaced with one with a smaller footprint. But instead it sounds like just a garden variety renovation. So maybe those academic buildings a much farther off than we thought.

A new Webb Center in an opportunity for ODU to build a statement building. Something that is a significant piece of architecture. And unlike the stadium, a new Webb can be paid for by increases in student fees. I know that's not popular, but unlike the stadium, Webb is used by nearly all Norfolk campus students, nearly every day.

I remember hearing that the new building could be the inspiration of a new logo like so many other schools have. I hope ODU doesnt drop the ball on one of the most important buildings on campus

RE: ODU Master Plan
Its a once in a lifetime opportunity to make a grand statement. Look at what CNU has done with its buildings, see what Regent has done. We have a different style of architecture, but the chance to seriously make an impression with the new building can't be understated. If it takes an extra year or two to get it right, do it. But it needs to happen as soon as possible, not 10 years down the road.

That was mentioned by myself and a number of other students during the multiple Q&A sessions they had.

UNC and UVA were the two examples I pointed to.

https://www.odu.edu/content/dam/odu/offi...r-plan.pdf Slide 47 is a list of the conditions and map of what buildings are to be torn down.

Man I hope that isn't the case. I'm not too sure about the quality of the structure. You can see cracks in the floor on the north side of the building (Starbucks side) and on that end both the 1st and 2nd floors vibrate.

Wow. That rendering was ugly. The Ted came out so much nicer than the early drawings. Maybe the same will be the case with the football stadium.

RE: ODU Master Plan
Although it appears that a full replacement of Webb Center may be a long ways off, I believe the bones of the structure are such that a substantial interior and exterior renovation (most likely in phases) could be sufficient and allow for an architectural statement.

Other than budget/funding, the main reason cited to me for not replacing Webb Center was the logistical nightmare of taking Webb Center offline for a completely new building - other proposed campus construction exasperates both of these issues.

Not sure why they are starting to put new stuff in the new education building as it's the perfect temporary home for the webb stuff.

So when I was back at ODU for a football game I noticed they tore down the old Larchmont Elementary school and built a new one further away from Hampton Blvd. I wonder what they are going to do with that land. I would love to see ODU build a really nice Alumni center there. I think it would be a really good place for it.

Yeah. Me too. Every time I've brought that up by people who live there though they get vehemently opposed to the idea. Evidently there is a lot of sentimental association to that space and people get very emotional about it. I thought it would be a great idea to trade the Powhatan Apt land for the Larchmont Elementary land and then see if the city could entice WHRO to move downtown near all the other media outlets. Seemed to me like a win, win, win. Larchmont would have a nicer quiter spot not on a busy road, ODU could get that nice chunk of land across from campus and downtown would get a nice new tennant. Larchmonters acted like I was insane for even suggesting the idea. But I didnt go to school there either.
