I don't see no-nonsense King Poppy wanting him there with his drama. Minnesota is rumored to actively pursuing a trade and if they would part with Andrew Wiggins as part of the deal, I would make that trade. Reality check: I would be surprised if they part with Wiggins. Derick Rose is signed and is going to work out with LeBron in Vegas.

Wiggins-Irving?

it's probably for the best if they don't sell the franchise out while the warriors dominate the foreseeable future. kawhi's still young and san anton' love em some home grown. i can't wait for the basketball landscape post warriors era. it's silly how much of an advantage they have

Maybe even more amazing is how the Warriors organization made it work salary/contract-wise and keeping everyone's egos in check.

RE: 2017-18 NBA thread: off season
My take on the Kyrie Irving thing is that LeBron James' camp leaked it to the press. Kyrie probably has gone to the management a couple times to ***** about playing with Lebron.

Kyrie is friends with Steph Curry and James Harden, and was with those guys are Harrison Barnes wedding, yucking up with Curry as he imitated one of Lebron's speech patterns (making fun of it). These guys are all several years younger than James, a different generation (Basketball generations are maybe 6-7 years, not 20 of regular generations). So they are not really peers, Lebron and Kyrie have different tastes and different circles. Also it is well known that James is super intense and about as much fun to be around as Kobe. James has a posse while Kobe is kind of a loner. But both of them are like salt, no acid, in wound style of motivators for their teams. This style grates Kyrie.

As a long time 49er fan I was shocked to know that Bill Walsh resigned four or five times, and Eddie DeBartolo fired him a dozen times, but John McVay calmed them down or held the paperwork for days until the passion passed over. We never heard about that in the public. But this happens with A personalities all the rime in sports. So why leak it? And who does it benefit?

The reason I think the leak came from James' camp is that he wants to stay in Cleveland (it's home) if possible ("I am fully committed to Cleveland"). But he knows the team he has needs to upgrade and change to beat the Warriors. Now lots of players go to management and *****, "I want to go to another team" and we never hear about it. But this one was public, and I think to run the flag up the pole to see what the Cavaliers could get for Kyrie. And while theya re at it can they dump Kevin Love and get a decent package as well?

Brian Scalabrini brought up a good point. If Kyrie waits a year and LeBron opts to leave then he is the man in Cleveland and he can get a Max extension of $43M a year, compared to leaving and being limited to about $31 Max contract. So it makes no sense for him to leak his discontent. It however makes sense for Lebron if he wants to push him out.

But who knows

RE: 2017-18 NBA thread: off season
One thing I find fascinating is the two-way (2W) contract which give up to $75K to play down. The whole thing is marketed as allowing teams to carry 17 players. But that is not quite true. In reality when a 2W player is up on the main team, they are still limited to 15 players, and they can suit only 12; no change from the current rules.

Further I did the math and the salary max limits 2Ws to 17 NBA games ($169K) since they max out at $250K salary before you have to sign them to a regular contract, assuming they have the max $75K guaranteed for their G League contract. If they are guaranteed $50K only, that would permit them to play in 20 NBA games ($199K). Of course 45 day limit you are unlikely to have 20 games in there, but you also have the time after the G League season ends and time before they start camp (brief). The time before will probably just be practice, not games.

Note: it is common now for teams to give players camp contracts with $50K guaranteed, knowing they will likely cut them and then sign them to their G League affiliate. These are the two or three best players usually on each G League team before these two way contracts.

These contracts impact a bit the regular NBA draft, especially the both of the 2nd round. The last 12 picks are most Euro Stash players (drafted, maybe play summer, told to stay in Europe for a couple years) -which are more assets for trades, such as salary dumps, where you are required to get something back- and now players who are given 2 way contracts (five of last 12 are Euro Stash, 5 are two way, one is straight G league, one is not clear).

The impact on the main NBA team I suspect will be for teams to carry 14 instead of 15. That last spot will be a rotation of a couple 2W players and a couple 10 day contracts. You can effectively cover 50 games. By doing this you can free an extra $1.47M in cap space (useful for singing one more player above the minimum), and still know you have that lats roster spot covered. When your team is healthy you don;t need that extra spot. When somebody is hurt you do.

We will see how it plays out. But I think it's worth watching.

GM LeBron alienates another team....teammate...

Unless this brokers other moves by the Cavs I don't think it makes them better than the Warriors.

Agree but I feel the Cavs still improved overall from this trade now and in the future. Thomas is no slouch to score but the addition of Crowder helps them on defense and he can shoot the trey. They also picked up a potential lottery pick from Brooklyn. They traded one guy, albeit Kyrie, and got 3 players in return in addition to the draft pick.

My first thought was, are the Cavs possibly going to flip that Brooklyn 1st-round pick to a team who will send the Cavs someone who can help them this year.

I can't think of any available player who would fit that bill -- though I bet if Cleveland had had that pick a few months ago, the Pacers would have happily taken it in exchange for Paul George.

Thomas can't defend, so the trade doesn't solve CLE fundamental problem with GSW. This move was just so the Cavs wouldn't be a complete shell of a team when LeBron bounces.

I.T., like LeBron, will be an unrestricted free agent after the upcoming season.

The valuable piece from the trade, if Cleveland does a 76ers-style tank-and-rebuild, is the unprotected Brooklyn 1st round pick, if the Cavs don't use that pick to get a player or players who can help this season.

Agree this trade is a win for the Cavs only in that they don't get decimated like some of the other recent "forced" trades.

That pick is a thorn in the Lakers' side if the Cavs can pick up somebody that will make LeBron happy.

LOL, that hip injury, the reason the Celtics probably dumped Thomas, is causing him not to meet his physical with the Cavs and now the Cavs want some compensation.

RE: 2017-18 NBA thread: off season
Cavs knew about IT's condition when the trade was made. But, apparently the NBA trading rules allow them to threaten to cancel the trade, so they're going to take advantage.

Best guess is that the Cavs want to see if Boston wants Kyrie badly enough to throw in a second 1st round draft choice. If the Celtics say no to that, then the Cavs will threaten again to cancel the trade, but will ultimately settle for Boston giving them an additional 2nd round pick.

And that's exactly what happened. No surprise.

Quote:With a Thursday morning deadline looming, the Boston Celtics agreed to send the Cleveland Cavaliers a 2020 second-round draft pick via the Miami Heat to acquire four-time All-Star guard Kyrie Irving and complete the blockbuster trade.

The Celtics resisted the Cavaliers' desire for a first-round pick to compensate the Cavs' reluctance to sign off on Isaiah Thomas' hip injury, and Cleveland finally agreed to consummate the deal late Wednesday night.
