I was told each tailgating area is big enough to park a car in and put up a tent.

If so that will be terrific. I may buy a parking pass for 1 game anyhow just to be sure, if thats possible.

Maybe so with a small car and a smaller than 10x 10 tent and you are not putting together multiple tents in a group. That's why I just paid for a season pass and mine won't be an issue.

I was told when I chose my spot earlier this week that all tailgating spots will be 20x10.

I think they had 200 tailgate spots. At $95/spot, that's $19k in revenue.

RE: BT Tailgate parking spots
20x 10. So if you have a 10 x 10 tent that leaves 10 feet. Your avareage car is 13 feet and unless you have a small economy car they are longer than 13. Now try and put several tents together touching each other and then try to park cars in those spaces. It's just not happening. That's why a lot of us just paid te 45 extra to park out of the way.

We had to fight to get tailgate spaces because our AD believed we should tailgate where we park in much smaller spaces. When we had someone convince him we needed a separate tailgate area so groups could tailgate together, they made the spaces too small and he had to be convinced the spaces needed to be larger.

Then he mandated that The tailgate spots would go on the priority point system instead of the way they were done before. He was again told that the whole reason we wanted a separate tailgate area it was so groups could tailgate together and the point system made it more difficult to put people together. He did not care and that is the way it was going to be done. Thankfully we still have some in the athletic department look out for us and was able to put many of us together

We had to use some leverage for our tailgating group as well. FYI I have spot 106, but I'll be tailgating with The Greenbackers.

I spoke to the ticket office and I have 103-106 and that they had checked and they had not doubled up on the space, but yours was likely spot 108.

It'd be nice if they didn't send me a parking pass with 106 on it then. Calling them to sort it out now.

Never mind. I have a regular parking pass, not a tailgating one, which is fine.

The Blazer Game Day twitter account said today the student tailgate spots are 20 x 30. Not sure if that's the same dimensions for the regular spots or not.

RE: BT Tailgate parking spots
It's not the same. The student tailgate spots are a lot bigger for some reason (Good for them) and on the opposite end of the stadium from everyone else tailgating. (yes, makes no sense).

The reserved tailgating spots are 20 x 10 and we had to fight to get that. They were the same size as a parking space then they made it 20 x 9 and we reminded them that a tent is generally 10' wide then it went to 20 x 10.

The general public is supposed to tailgate in their parking spot and not supposedly allowed to be out of their space. Good luck with that and if enforced could cause some ill feelings. Yes we were all expected to tailgate in our own spots and our AD never thought people would tailgate in groups. I'm not even joking.

Something that should be so simple should not be made that difficult.

I just looked at the tailgating map. Whoever moved the students way over there is an idiot. They're using the old student tailgate area for bus/RV parking. Do we have enough buses/RVs to need such a large area for them? I don't think I've ever been way out where they put the students.

RE: BT Tailgate parking spots
Before posting this, I'll just go ahead and say sorry for the text wall. Too much coffee this morning maybe, in combination with excitement for UAB football I haven't felt in a long long time.

I had to look up the maps, since I naively assumed tailgating would largely take place where it always has.

Here is the map. Took me a minute to find it, so if anybody else wanted to see I linked it.

My thoughts and questions:

I assume what is labeled "Reserved Tailgate" are the spots we've been discussing here?

It's going to be a bit of a trip getting student tailgate stuff to and from the actual tailgate spot, especially given that they have to cross the tickets/will call area. This will be where people are lined up and congregating immediately before the games. It does look like they moved student entry to Gate 6 (right around seating section 7) from the will call area, so that may thin the crowd at that area a bit. (I looked over the tailgating guide again and it looks like they're at least allowing 1 vehicle/student tailgate spot, so maybe it won't be all that bad)

According to this student tailgating won't open until 4 hours prior to kickoff. I definitely remember being out there long before that when I was a student. There's a school down the road that opens tailgating spots at 7:00 AM on game days and allows setting up the day before. Does anybody know when reserved tailgate will be opened?

Can somebody explain what the All-American, Captain, Official, and Lot J in the SW corner of the map are? I'm guessing coaching staff, players, big donors, referees/officiating crew (that seems like a large lot for them, I'm not sure how many people are involved in that though), stadium staff (there is a large employee lot East of the stadium though)?

Seems to me that student parking could have been placed closer to the student tailgating with minimal shuffling, but that's just one poor guy's opinion. I don't think in 5 years of going to most every home game and several trips since then I've ever even been in the SW corner of the grounds. It really won't be that huge of a deal come gameday, but that's my thoughts on it.

ATTALLABLAZE Wrote:The student tailgate spots are a lot bigger for some reason (Good for them) and on the opposite end of the stadium from everyone else tailgating. (yes, makes no sense).

Yeah, the student tailgate spots are 20x30! Amazing that we had to fight to get anything more than a vehicle sized spot as a "tailgate" area --> 20x9 --> 20x10, which required pointing out painfully obvious facts. As you said though, good for them. I hope they make the most of the spots.

ATTALLABLAZE Wrote:Yes we were all expected to tailgate in our own spots and our AD never thought people would tailgate in groups. I'm not even joking.

If they expect everybody literally just to sit in the parking spots or tailgate spots they purchased, they are going to have some unhappy fans. If they honestly thought that, I can almost see why they thought a vehicle sized spot was an appropriate tailgate size. 03-no I couldn't afford to swing a tailgate spot this year, so am I supposed to just sit in my car? Can I come hang with y'all?
You just know our AD has been to a tailgate before. I doubt he was wearing any green at any of them though.

dfarr Wrote:They're using the old student tailgate area for bus/RV parking.

Looks to me like the spot I used to tailgate at as a student is single game parking now. They might be using that spot for bus/RV parking. I just haven't heard that but you likely have more info than me.
