I understand why UALR alums might want to add football. But one of the main reasons I became a LR fan years ago was precisely because we did not have football, so I have to root against it.

Nobody--absolutely nobody-- predicted we would have at least 12 active microbreweries in central Arkansas alone, the vast majority of them making beer worthy of paying good money for up from only 3 just 10 years ago--and 3 was a big number back then, more than Tulsa had at the time. The bankers that rejected Russ Melton's loans to start Diamond Bear did not see it coming.

Sometimes you have to create your niche and let it expand and grow. You have to brew your own excitement, culture and buzz around something we already love to do in the Natural State: college Football and tailgating. Except THIS time it is our very own hometown team and we don't have to share it with Fayetteville. We can make it a big deal. The breweries and the food trucks will show up with bells on.

I firmly believe that (if we can afford it) adding FBS football will "flip the switch" and boost the Trojans to a much higher orbit.

The city of Little Rock is quite literally a Football program away from replacing calling the hogs with Bud Light* with bellowing a new Trojan cheer fueled by tasty local suds and grub.

*(no offense to Bud drinkers, but come on!)

Agreed wholeheartedly. The prospect of tailgating on WM alone (diwn the line some time) should boost interest in the city. And you're right. Food trucks will be out in force, too.

Four bids for the study were received and opened by the University yesterday. The study should take 6-7 months once begun. It will be very interesting to get some real info on the issue and see what the University and city would be up against to make it happen.

If polling is part of the study, that won't tell you anything. Most people in LR would probably say they would be in favor of football here.

My guess is that polling probably won't have much to do with it. What would it cost to start it, and what would be needed to sustain it will be the bottom line.

I know...How many SBC schools alone have recently added FBS because they can afford it never mind they don't have great attendance.

Seems to me if your basketball fan base is "older," maybe adding football and marketing the experience like has been noted with the semi-pro soccer team that was mentioned in this thread, with food trucks and all of that, would be a good way to energize a younger fan base for basketball and the other sports too.

Before football at Georgia State, I too was concerned about the viability of our graying basketball fan base. Football and some basketball success has helped mitigate those concerns a bit.

I think you make very good points. In Little Rock's favor on this thing is:

1) There will shortly be a void of college football in Little Rock;
2) There is already a tradition of tailgating at War Memorial Stadium that will also be missed;
3) Although Atlanta has a much larger population base to draw on, Little Rock has no professional football team, or Georgia Tech football, or a much closer Athens to Atlanta than Fayetteville to Little Rock to contend with.

Not in Little Rock's favor: Cost
