UND included it deep within fall camp notes. It was not a separate press release.

The past couple of seasons, NDSU vs Montana was a season opening game and EWU losing in OT to NDSU was a major FCS battle. Why weren't those game part of a Challenge Cup?

This year, four teams are in the FCS top eight: #2 NDSU, #4 SDSU, #5 EWU, and #8 UND, so it's not like the teams have dropped off the radar.

Because it is almost football season and someone came up with an idea to hype something?

So the management was incompetent before? A series between the Big Sky and MVFC is longstanding so now they just decide to hype it?

You can look at this, likely everything else, as sign of your impending BSC apocalypse. The rest of us will enjoy it for what it is, two top conferences battling it out.

Obviously, it's because the Montanas, Idaho and EWU (for some reason) are set to join the Summit, which will declare itself an FBS league because they're just like Liberty University except with half the athletic budgets, and the Big Sky Conference and the MVFC are just so happy that UND and Montana are finally going to share a conference that they don't mind their leagues getting eviscerated in the process.

Duh.

The situation starting the Sun Belt FBS conference was much more of a monstrosity.

Sun Belt FBS starting point:

La-Monroe
La-La
N Texas St
NMSU
Ark St
MTSU
Idaho

If this was started when this board was going, they would have been laughed off the board for having such a preposterous league. Things have a way of repeating themselves, because people by and large don't know history.

A group of schools will have a much cheaper time transitioning than Liberty, which has some major bucks to stay independent. This is discussed on the Liberty scheduling thread, if you care to comment there.

IT's not a monstrosity, it's an absurdity.

And most of the original Sun Belt football schools were already FBS, so the analogy doesn't make much sense.

Yeah, it was an usually bad FB start for a conference. The Sun Belt started in 2001 like this:
1. North Texas- Champion 5-7, Won the conference and went to New Orleans Bowl
2. New Mexico St 5-7
3. Louisiana Lafayette 3-8
4. Louisiana Monroe 2-9
5. Arkansas St 2-9
6. Idaho 1-10

MTSU- finished 8-3 but weren't yet eligible to be champion and go to the New Orleans Bowl.

The Big Sky got a new commissioner not too long ago, and she happens to be a woman. Given that MVFC commish (also Sr. Associate Commish of MVC) is also a woman, could easily guess that the Big Sky commish sought her out and discussed several ideas, including a challenge series with the MVFC.

Think it will be great!

And, of course, unquestionably, it has nothing to do with realignment.

This is true even if NoDak is right about a Dakota-Montana plan. Because if there is a plan in the works to remake the Summit into the Great Northern League with zombie JJ Hill as commissioner, then the Big Sky and MVFC commissioners aren't going to be celebrating that plan, they'd be OPPOSING that plan.

RE: So who goes to the Summit?
Well, I've said this many times, in multiple threads .... but it's probably worth repeating:

it's not like anyone thinks that the basic idea of an athletic partnership between the Dakota and Montana flagships is a terrible, stupid concept. It's a fine concept ..... but it never worked out that way. If it was going to be a thing, it would've needed to happen back in the 60's.

Have said since the very beginning that all the Big Sky schools know about the impending exit of Montanas, Idaho and EWU, including the new commissioner who very well might lead it. The MVFC and Summit Commissioners are without a clue.

Since Warren Buffet owns all JJ Hills assets, guess he'd be commissioner.

No - at the Very beginning it was WAC FBS.

As I have said repeatedly, but people like you are so livid they can't read, the WAC was the only FBS vehicle until Liberty showed the waiver way.

Ang actually in the beginning, thought Big Sky teams would join the Sun Belt first as associates and then break off.

Not changing goalposts but the starting point, which any business man would do to make it more probable of success.

The Idaho St president offered his resignation at a convenient time. There is already credible blame layer at the feet of the prez and AD there. It will only get worse.

I very much doubt that waivers are available to schools with $25M athletic budgets who can't make a very credible claim of religious discrimination.
