WKU took the first 2 of the 3 games they are playing in Costa Rica.

1st game WKU beat Laurentian (Canadian University who beat Montana the night before we played them) by a final score of 104-98. WKU played most of the game with only 1 active post player in Justin Johnson (19 points and 10 rebounds) after starting center Dwight Coleby (Kansas Transfer) went out with a sprained ankle early in the game.

2nd game WKU beat the Costa Rican Men's National Team by a final score of 99-69. Justin Johnson was the only active post player and and played about 20 minutes.

Junior guard Lamonte Bearden (Buffalo transfer who sat out last season) has led WKU in scoring both games by dropping 23 and 21 respectively. Juco product Jordan Brangers has been lighting it up from downtown with 8 three-pointers in the 2 games.

Tops play 3rd and final game today against Laurentian from Canada again.

Where to start, lets see of course Robinson is gone now, we found out Wed. our 6-9 4 star Syracuse transfer Diagne has been ruled ineligible to play by NCAA (can travel and practice just cannot play in games as of now)as they are still determining his amateurism, 6-9 Dwight Coleby played 7 min. in 1st game but sprained his foot so he is out rest of trip and then our other 6-9 guy Idelhan is not eligible until 2nd semester....Justin only came back Sunday(JJ put on 25 lbs for football, he admitted not in basketball shape yet) so if not for him our center right now would be 6-5 starting....We went from a ton of big men depth to now on a shoestring...

Always something with WKU hoops last few seasons, just wish we could get a few breaks just once....Almost determined we cannot have football and basketball be great at the same time...

WKU destroys Laurentian 118-63 in the rematch of Tuesday nights high scoring affair. Justin Johnson led all scorers with 27 points on 12-13 shooting. Freshman guard Taveion Hollingsworth was right behind him with 25 points.

WKU finishes it's Costa Rica tour going 3-0 with an avg margin of victory of 30.3 points per game.

Tops still have a few more days in Costa Rica to have fun and spend more time bonding as a team. Something they are way ahead of last years squad on already.

Sounds like WKU post play is currently... not in good shape.

not currently. But should be sorted out by the time the season starts in November. Diagne should be cleared to play, Coleby should be healed form sprain, Johnson should be in basketball shape again, and Idehen will still be waiting for December before he can start playing in games.

Don't know if this applies to Diagne, but the NCAA can be pretty strict with the amateurism rules. Student athletes have lost their eligibility for things as innocent as accepting food, shelter, and basic living expenses from friends.

Diagne issue was he was JUCO and declared for the NBA draft to see his stock. He got some bad advice from people and after declaring he didn't realize he couldn't go back to JUCO. Unlike Division 1, if you declare in JUCO you are done even if you don't sign an agent. You then must sit out a year before you can play in another division of NCAA Basketball. Diagne set out last year and paid his own way so that he would be eligible to go this season. He should be good. The NCAA just hasn't fully cleared him yet.

Nothing to do with basketball, but the best burger I ever had in my life was at a little beachside burger shack in Costa Rica.

I'm completely speculating on this but there was an article recently that talked about a HS coach arranging to pay his tuition to WKU last year when he was a walk-on. If that ends up being what's behind this holdup and costing him his eligibility then it would have been yet another bad decision on his part. For his sake, I hope this isn't the issue.

A couple years ago a story came out about a homeless Baylor walk-on football player being declared permanently ineligible by the NCAA because he accepted housing, food, and basic living expenses from family friends while on the team. The NCAA can be ruthless.

Yes. But that coach is/was his mentor and sponsor here in the US. Diagne was not the only foreign kid he has done that for. Some of which were not even that talented of players. He has a program that sponsors foreign athletes to help them attend college in the US. Which is certainly not against ncaa bylaws or immoral. NCAA is probably just crossing all their t's and dotting all their i's.

Then again those in charge of ruling eligibility really probably doesn't care how long it takes. Now if his jersey read Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina, UCLA, they would have ruled on it yesterday and it would have always been a favorable ruling.

RE: 2017-18 Basketball Thread
UTEP lost a heartbreaker to McGill University in Costa Rica. Final score 56-54. Omega Harris missed a long three at the buzzer. Osborne led UTEP scoring with 12 points 6 rebounds in 26 minutes. Kelvin Jones with 10/5 in 17 minutes. Paul Thomas 10/3 in 20. Disappointing production from our guard play. Harris had 4/3 in 26. Freshman Magee had 5/2 in 20. Flaggart finished with 0/2 in 17 despite starting the game. I didn't see the game since there was no stream or audio available so it's hard to get an accurate assessment of what just happened.
