Baseball De-Commitment
Josh Rivera, 2019 commit, just de-committed. The kid is really good.

I'm telling you, losing Van Hook is not a good thing. Since he took over the recruiting from Hallmark, we've secured some good players. Rivera was one of 2 commits from the 2019 class. This leaves Jackson Kiddy from Sweeny as the lone remaining 2019 commit.

Christian Cienfuegos, a 5-9 SS/RHP from Baytown (Memorial) has committed to Rice. He's class of 2019. His tweet announcing his commitment has a picture of him with Coach Pope.

Coach Pope seems to be stepping up the effort to bring in recruits. Picking up where VH left off is a good thing.

True, but it doesn't explain how he lost our star recruit pitcher in next year's incoming class; a guy he coached at Cy Ranch.

Placing the blame on Pope is extremely unfair in my opinion. When you spend 2 months spinning your wheels in the hiring process, the other schools like Texas will pressure kids with uncertainty. And we STILL haven't hired to replace VH yet. This is on administration. Pope, in just his first year of collegiate coaching has been thrust into a new role and he's doing everything he can to make up ground.

I am not at all sure that all recruits want to continue playing for their HS coach.

I believe he originally committed within a month of Pope being hired as our pitching coach.

Flannery is a 6-2 RHP/OF from Fredericksburg (class of 2019). So we're adding up the 2019 commits once again.

I do wish we'd get another 2017 recruit.

How many roster spots do we have available?

Flannery has big upside. Big kid.

Gonna be another 2019 commit coming in the next couple days too. Pope is bringing them in! Good for him!

And another one....

Say what you want but Pope is bringing them in. That's 6 in the last week between 2018 and 2019 classes.

To the guy who wanted another 2017 recruit....you do realize that the 2017 recruits are freshmen this year, right? Not getting any more recruits for this year. We had a great group already. The next class is 2018. There's about 10 in that group. With the addition of Martin, we have 5 in the 2019 group. Things are going surprisingly well considering the uncertainty of the OG and his contract.

Late signings-- especially amongst JUCO transfers and grad transfers-- do occur well into August, but I agree that the roster for the 2018 season is pretty set. If it's true that Robbie Lammons and Wright have left, I believe that means we lost 7 players (Otto, Myers, Gray, Wunderlich, Warren, Sheppard, Lammons, Wright), and to my count we have 9 incoming recruits: http://www.riceowls.com/sports/m-basebl/...16aaa.html
Where we are short for the coming season is in outfielders, with Chandler, Sarchet and Staab the only ones with any D-1 playing experience to date, and Chandler the only one who has any type of success. Wouldn't be surprised if Gneiting is converted to outfield this Fall. Any chance Aviles can be converted from catcher to OF, as his bat might warrant more playing time than simply being DiCaprio's backup?

Yes, Pope appears to have stepped up on the recruiting front, but are any of these guys Top 400 caliber? I don't believe we have any current recruit playing in this Summer's area code games.

Gneiting is an outfielder. He was moved to 2nd when Gray was out, but his main position is outfielder.

If you base your diagnosis of a player's ability by the Area Code games, then you've got a very narrow idea of the level of players who never even try out for the Area Code games. I have personally seen 3 of the recent commits play (in person) and I can promise you we are getting some very talented kids.

Didn't realize this. Thanks for the info. So, Gneiting and Chandler make two starting OFers, with Sarchet, Staab and the incoming Frosh battling for the other spot? Does Gneiting have a strong enough arm for RF?

Sure wish Dunlap can be converted into a passable 1B, but at least we'll have him as our everyday DH from the get-go next season (save when Dom gets a break from catching duties). I'm assuming Moss and Mueller will battle for starting 1B (that is when Addison is not pitching in relief).
