BBJ: Q&A with Mayor Bell
https://www.bizjournals.com/birmingham/n...-bell.html

Excerpt:

What is your stance on the proposed stadium and expansion of the Legacy Arena at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex?

I am in support of a new stadium to be located in the downtown area. We are currently in discussion with BJCC, UAB and the private sector to find ways to close the financial gap of the annual debt service to pay for an open air stadium.

So at least it seems like he's moved on from the dome idea.

The two questions remain unanswered -- What funding can / will the city provide and What land will be used once a decision is made?

These decisions will potentially have immense financial impact upon the business future of the city, particularly in its status as the largest city and business center in Alabama.

The land has been determined for quite a while now. Just east of the exhibition halls & Alabama Sports Hall of Fame; just north of the Uptown district.

Is that the same land originally acquired for the MPF? If it is, then the city may be forced to choose between building one at the expense of the other.

for the 87th time, if an open air stadium gets built under the auspices of the BJCC Authority, the "MPF" is not happening. Get that through your head. The dome and the open air stadium, regardless of the land used for either, are mutually exclusive.

They are "mutually exclusive" if there is money and land for both. For B'ham, the money and the land choices are critical to its financial future for this century -- unless the BJCC can do it all without city participation on either count..

The point is, both won't happen. It will be one or the other. Chances are, if anything happens, it will be open air. Why? Because as Mayor Bell said in his interview, it has joint support from UAB, Birmingham Businesses, the BJCC and the city. The MPF doesn't have that.

And yes, I believe that if the city wants to hold out for the MPF that the remaining entities can make it happen without them at some point.

I visited Birmingham this past weekend for the first time in over four years. The steps forward that have been taken in the entertainment vein are astounding to me. I could be wrong (maybe I've been living in rural NC too long), but it seems to me that there is a new drive to make Birmingham a destination city that I've not seen before.

I have never denied that I prefer the building of the MPF as the best way for the city of B'ham to move into its future. I lived in B'ham for over 60 years, and I saw its leaders nearly always opt for the smaller, cheaper and easier choice. I am a believer in Dr Joe Volker's admonition to not dream too small a dream.

Now I see that mantra denied in order to get the smaller, cheaper and easier objective. The city will live with whatever choice it makes, and its consequences for the city's status among its peers. I will abide the choice made, but if it is the usual, I will not think it the best for the city's brightest future. It will have settled for something less.

I understand where you are coming from, but this has literally been a discussion in Birmingham my entire life. It's time to concede that the past generations in Birmingham didn't get it done and allow the leadership now in place to move forward as they best see fit. An open air surely won't be worse for Birmingham than the nothing we've had while debating the MPF for the last 30 years.

its not wanting a mpf that is the issue. its that you ask a question or make a statement. you are answered or corrected and then continually ask or say the same thing over and over and over. each time someone points out the facts and you ignore them. thats why you are the new sax

We don't have the money for the MPF. Let's build a first class open air stadium that's actually doable. Don't let perfect be the enemy of great.

There is an infinite amount of land available for whatever anyone wants to build. The limiting factor is money. The city + the BJCC + the County don't have the money for a dome by itself. They will barely be able to rub a couple quarters together and end up with an open air stadium. Please for the love of all that is good and holy stop asking where they will put a dome if they build an open stadium.

Your view seems to be that there can only be one decision so discussion is pointless. NO DECISION has been made so I will continue to express my opinion of what should be done.

If you are correct, the city very well may go along with what I see as an updated "Legion Field, Jr" and live with the consequences. I likely won't be around 30 years from now to admit error or to say "I told you so", but the city will live on into its second half of its second century (after 2021) with the choice it makes.

If you have a spare $2 Billion sitting around, please let us know and I'm sure the BJCC will be glad to build both projects. Money isn't infinite, and Birmingham is not and will never be Atlanta. Birmingham has wasted away every opportunity at something new and great while waiting for the next great big perfect thing. Perfect is always the enemy of good enough and is about 30% of why Birmingham has stagnated so much.

You are correct in that B'ham will never be another Atlanta. That ship sailed several decades ago when our 1960s state and city leaders made us look more like 1930s Germany than 1970s America. The question is - in that frame of reference - just exactly what will B'ham become? Another Dothan? Another Bessemer? Another Macon? Another Columbus? Another Jackson? If B'ham can't see its way to become another great city, what level example city should it aim to become short of that?

We have built a minor league baseball park for our Class AA team, and now we want to build a minor league seasonal stadium. There is (in my opinion) a good chance that without the year round traffic of the MPF, the Uptown entertainment district will whither and go away just like the Morris Avenue entertainment district did.

I prefer an open air stadium. Fall in Alabama is a fine time of year.

You are correct that fall is usually a fine time of the year in Alabama. Now what are you going to build for the other 3 seasons that the city must live? No one is arguing that the open air stadium is not the football only answer IF that is the only factor for the city to build for.

The well designed MPF is a FOUR SEASON facility to produce city revenue year round. That is the question the city must answer to determine its future among its contemporaries - whoever those might be.

Morris Ave in the 80s and 90s were a victim of crime. I don't know if you've been downtown to the 2nd Ave corridor, but Birmingham is doing pretty well without a debt saddled domed stadium ideal for literally nothing in town.
