OT - 2017 Astros
Board is kind of dead right now but here's a topic that might be worth talking about. The 2017 Astros - will they win the World Series and give the city of Houston its first-ever professional baseball title?

Not unless they get their pitching staightened out and/or the Dodgers have some major hiccups.

Id like to see another arm added

Dodgers Ace just went on DL.

If we get all our guys back, we'll have a formidable team; pitching, defense, and hitting.

Well, I'd call that a hiccup. Remains to be seen if it's minor or major for the Dodgers.

The Astros still need to add a #2 starter. Keuchel will be fine, but McCullers is very young and even when healthy has not been able to work deep into games. I would love to see us pickup Yu Darvish as a 3-month rental.

Better for the Dodgers that he's out now instead of his usual disappearance during the postseason.

That one stung a bit.

RE: OT - 2017 Astros
If the Astros don't make a trade for a pitcher of some type before August 1st, they should be blasted by the local media. In 1998, they made a trade for Randy Johnson right before the trade deadline (didn't work as they still lost the NLDS). In 2004, they got Carlos Beltran in June. In 2005, they didn't really do anything and even though they still made their one and only World Series (losing 4-0 to the White Sox), that inactivity probably cost Tim Purpura his GM job after a brief 2-year stint.

1 starting pitcher and 1 reliever is what they need as a minimum I'd say.

And BTW, Kershaw's injury could be huge in determining home field advantage for the World Series (which now goes to the team with the best regular season record). So if it's LA vs. Houston, Kershaw's injury might have just given Houston the home field advantage.

Given the Astros' road success, I'm not so sure a Houston home field advantage is that much of an advantage.

The Astros certainly will be in the mix. So much of it will come down to who gets hot in the playoffs. Regular season records don't mean that much.

RE: OT - 2017 Astros
Trade deadline just passed. The only move the Astros made apparently was getting LHP Francisco Liriano from the Blue Jays (for Aoki who I think they shouldn't have traded, and a minor leaguer). Pretty sad showing if that's all they end up doing - Liriano won't even be a starter apparently.

Meanwhile the Yankees get Sonny Gray, the Dodgers get Yu Darvish and the Red Sox gets the Mets closer, among other moves.

I guess I won't be heading to Gallery Furniture to buy a $3000 mattress (their promotion is buy $3000 worth of furniture and it's free if the Astros win the World Series) - I think if they had done something significant, I think they have a chance to win it all but I'm really surprised they were so quiet in the trade department.

Well now... The Dodgers just got Yu Darvish. With a larger and more visible Japanese community out in LA, I expect him to settle quickly and thrive.

The Dodgers have always emphasized pitching, but this year they have the complete package. Kershaw or no Kershaw, they are going to continue to roll through the NL.

I don't see who the Astros can get to level the playing field now. As for the Nats, they were never going to beat a team with elite pitching like the Dodgers. IMO, of course.

Nats got the Twins closer. I wouldn't count them out quite yet. It will come down to whether Kershaw and Strasburg are healthy probably (and the Nats need their injured hitters back too). The Cubs could be in the mix too.

One nice piece of trade news from a Rice perspective. Tony Cingrani got traded to the Dodgers so now we have another reason to root for them in the playoffs. Or maybe just one reason.

03-woohoo I really hope he thrives (sounds like he needs to work on not tipping his pitches), but he's just a rental. He'll be a FA at season's end and there's no telling if LA will make an offer - probably depends a lot on how he does the next 2+ months. With travel schedules I'm not sure how much the Japanese community will help him settle in, or even if there's much settling in that can be done, but he does have a Japanese teammate - Maeda - which might help too.

Hey now! 05-mafia Kinda cool to have an Owl out here, but he's been struggling. I'm hopeful the coaching staff can get him straightened out and use him a little more strategically so he can be more effective.

1. It doesn't really matter if he's a rental if the Dodgers win the World Series. He's an expensive insurance policy, sure, but the Dodgers are playing to win. And I think they will. Heck, at this point, they might not even need either Kershaw or Darvish. This is one of the best baseball teams I've seen in the last two decades.

2. If you're Japanese and you need some "home cooking" in this country, there is no place better than LA. There just isn't. Darvish will enjoy being based there, even with all of the travel during the season.

Brookes Owl, if you're a Dodgers fan, you can almost take this one to the bank at this point. The Dodgers are flat-out scary.

All my life. But it's just too much for me to get comfortable. Bad things happen.

Re #1, Yeah, I'm fine with him being a rental especially considering the price they paid - it was very reasonable. The one top 10 prospect they gave up has a MLB-ready bat but is a serious defensive liability. My only point was about settling in. There's not much settling to be done with a rental like him but you're right re #2, it should help him feel comfortable. (I moved from Santa Monica 6 yrs ago and definitely miss Little Osaka, among other things.)

Finally! The deal they should have done a month ago. Might be a big deal for the Astros in the next 1-2 months, and maybe this city itself too.

RE: OT - 2017 Astros
That's big, especially since Verlander has been pitching better since the All-Star break (2.41 ERA vs. 3.82 for season). That's the direction the rest of the Astros need to go. I think Keuchel and McHugh will have the kinks worked out, and if McCullers can come back with his head on straight, the addition of Verlander means a formidable front 4. I would leave Peacock as a starter; he's been tremendous this year and Fiers has been wildly inconsistent.

With Springer starting to regain his swing, and Correa coming back, hopefully this team will regain its mojo, put an execrable August behind them, and go thundering down the stretch and into the playoffs as baseball's hottest team.

With the addition of Maybin, the Astros now have the top 2 base stealers in the AL, too. May in was already organizing a relief drive for Houston from his home in NC, so I already like him.
