I am not going out on the limb like CA by say our Aggies will sweep any team is the WAC. But I do think Jans will prove in time to be a better tactical head coach than Weir. I think NMSU has good talent this year; maybe better than last season. However this team is almost completely new. Chemistry and roles have not been defined yet. I'm not sure this team can shoot from behind the arc as well as a season ago. So, Jans' team may not operate the same way as Weir's team in order to win games. I doubt this season team will rack up 28 wins or ride a 20 game winning streak like a season ago.

I thought Weir would have proved to be a very good Aggie coach, so I will not down play his potential. I felt Weir was a better motivator than Menzies. However, the one thing we need to realize is Weir's successful first season was accomplished with mostly Menzies' recruits. Weir still needed to prove he could sustain a winning program with solely his own recruiting. So, again this season, Jans will be helped by Menzies recruits (Sidy Ndir, Eli Chuha, and Johnathon Wilkins)... and a few by Weir's as well (AJ Harris, Jemerrio Jones, and Marlon Jones). It will take three or four seasons to find out if Jans can recruit at a level to consistently win WAC tournament Championships.

Weir was a poor in game coach last year but it was his first year. He will get a lot better. Most Aggie fans are writing him off simply because he left to UNM, most were singing his praises last year.

This is right on the money.

This is right on the money.

Appraisal of Menzies...
Menzies is a very good recruiter who recruited the best talent available. He then builds his system around his personnel's strengths. Menzies likes to recruit size. He liked to play fast but it was more important to him that his teams played through the post at what ever speed they played. Menzies was never good at making in game adjustments; relying mostly on a set game plan entering each game. Menzies was not much of a motivator. But he was (is) a player's coach. He got his players to play hard for him but they played at one level of intensity. They rarely dug deep when meeting equal or superior competition. Menzies was also not a great developer of talent. Their development was typically a four year process with much time sitting on the bench.

Appraisal of Weir...
Weir is also a very good recruiter but a little short sided. He doesn't recruit players who can't help him win immediately. So, he tends to recruit a lot of JUCOs and D1 transfers. Rather than build a system around his personnel, he recruited players to fit his specific set system. Since Weir likes to play fast, he puts more emphasis on having capable skilled guards rather than recruit a lot of size. He wants athletes with high motors. In his first season, Weir proved to be a "decent" in game coach but since his team is designed to play fast, his adjustment options were limited; play fast or play faster by putting full court pressure. Weir is a good motivator/salesman. But he holds no loyalties with his players. It's what have you done for me lately.

Appraisal of Jans (so far)...
In his first few months as NMSU coach, Jans appears to be a strong recruiter. He has a reputation as a grinder; a hard worker. Jans recruiting philosophy appears to be a middle ground between Menzies and Weir. Through his comments, Jans wants to build a team which plays fast but he will build a team around the strengths of his personnel. Jans also has a reputation of being a great assessor and developer of talent. He also has a reputation as a great tactical coach. But the jury is still out on his in game coaching and his ability to motivate his players to play at their highest level when the game is on the line.

On a side note, the reason Weir was compared to Lou Henson was because of the roots both built in Southern New Mexico. It was believe Weir would carry the same loyalties to NMSU as Henson... and build NMSU into a top mid-major. Henson had some big shoes to fill but Weir was (is) so young we felt it was only a matter to time before he grew into them. Now, we realize Weir is no Lou Henson. He has no loyalties. And, he is chasing the quick buck no matter where it leads him; he said all the right things and rubbed elbows with Lou Henson but is was all a big snow jobs on the Aggie fans.

As for Jans, we don't know how long he will stay at NMSU. But his coaching reputation is much more inline with Henson's abilities. I guess we will see if Jans can live up or exceed what our last few Aggie coaches accomplished.

Now back to waiting to find out what GCU ranking will be in the Top 144.

No one is sleeping on UVU. But New Mexico State has the most daengerous potential starting five in the conference.

AJ Harris - Signed with Ohio State
Sidy Ndir - Signed with Texas A&M
Zach Lofton - Signed with Minnesota
Eli Chuha - 2nd Team All-WAC/Top PF in the WAC
J. Wilkins -

Wilkins only averaged 5.5 PPG and 3.0 RPG last season but he did shoot 55% from the field and 36% from 3. If he can be more of a threat from outside, he will be a tough match up problem. Eli Chuha has recently said he has worked on his mid-range game.

NMSU sixth man will be Jemerrio Jones and of course the big JUCO scorer in Wayne Stewart (6'6 SF) who averaged 18/7 at Lamar CC last season. Aggie fans are excited about the first year under Chris Jans.

NMSU should finish in the top 80. 104 sounds about right for GCU. 103 is definitely to high for UNLV

UNLV signed a top 15, 5-star, freshman center, the #1 JUCO player in the country, another top 100 JUCO, and a 4-star point guard. They also added a transfer PG from UW Milwaukee who was #2 in the nation in assists. And, they return their top scorer and top rebounder from a season ago. If you think NMSU is a top 80 team then UNLV ranking is not too high.

Last year NMSU finished 84th in Kenpom. They're going to do better than 28-6? There's absolutely no way.

A lot needs to go right for NMSU... great coaching, good team chemistry, no injuries. I don't think this team will have as good a record as a season ago but this team might be a stronger team by season's end.

Are we talking Kenpom or this college madness ranking? There are so many rankings it makes them irrelevant. Heck last year we had an RPI in the 50's. The thing that hurt their rankings last year was their strength of schedule and conference. Right off the bat this years schedule seems to be better especially adding a tournament with some good teams. I feel we do have a lot better overall team this year. I guess we'll have to see how they play together, what style, and if we can avoid key and long term injuries. The road to the WAC championship still goes through NMSU.

Pistol I'm aware of UNLV's pick ups, I just don't feel they are going to be much better than last year. I'd say maybe middle of the pack in the MW? At the very best they will split with the top MW teams. So do you think they will do better than middle of the pack and splitting with the top teams?
