This is right on the money.
Appraisal of Menzies...
Menzies is a very good recruiter who recruited the best talent available. He then builds his system around his personnel's strengths. Menzies likes to recruit size. He liked to play fast but it was more important to him that his teams played through the post at what ever speed they played. Menzies was never good at making in game adjustments; relying mostly on a set game plan entering each game. Menzies was not much of a motivator. But he was (is) a player's coach. He got his players to play hard for him but they played at one level of intensity. They rarely dug deep when meeting equal or superior competition. Menzies was also not a great developer of talent. Their development was typically a four year process with much time sitting on the bench.
Appraisal of Weir...
Weir is also a very good recruiter but a little short sided. He doesn't recruit players who can't help him win immediately. So, he tends to recruit a lot of JUCOs and D1 transfers. Rather than build a system around his personnel, he recruited players to fit his specific set system. Since Weir likes to play fast, he puts more emphasis on having capable skilled guards rather than recruit a lot of size. He wants athletes with high motors. In his first season, Weir proved to be a "decent" in game coach but since his team is designed to play fast, his adjustment options were limited; play fast or play faster by putting full court pressure. Weir is a good motivator/salesman. But he holds no loyalties with his players. It's what have you done for me lately.
Appraisal of Jans (so far)...
In his first few months as NMSU coach, Jans appears to be a strong recruiter. He has a reputation as a grinder; a hard worker. Jans recruiting philosophy appears to be a middle ground between Menzies and Weir. Through his comments, Jans wants to build a team which plays fast but he will build a team around the strengths of his personnel. Jans also has a reputation of being a great assessor and developer of talent. He also has a reputation as a great tactical coach. But the jury is still out on his in game coaching and his ability to motivate his players to play at their highest level when the game is on the line.
On a side note, the reason Weir was compared to Lou Henson was because of the roots both built in Southern New Mexico. It was believe Weir would carry the same loyalties to NMSU as Henson... and build NMSU into a top mid-major. Henson had some big shoes to fill but Weir was (is) so young we felt it was only a matter to time before he grew into them. Now, we realize Weir is no Lou Henson. He has no loyalties. And, he is chasing the quick buck no matter where it leads him; he said all the right things and rubbed elbows with Lou Henson but is was all a big snow jobs on the Aggie fans.
As for Jans, we don't know how long he will stay at NMSU. But his coaching reputation is much more inline with Henson's abilities. I guess we will see if Jans can live up or exceed what our last few Aggie coaches accomplished.
Now back to waiting to find out what GCU ranking will be in the Top 144.
