Middle Tennessee's non-conference schedule 'more difficult' than last season

Middle Tennessee men's basketball will play three SEC teams, including Vanderbilt, as part of 12-game non-conference schedule for the 2017-18 season.

Eight of the teams on the schedule played in either the NCAA tournament or the NIT last season.

The Blue Raiders had the 19th ranked non-conference strength of schedule in the nation last season and their non-conference RPI was 26th.

Only four non-conference home games. Four on the road and four at the Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii.

What I know of Marshall's schedule right now:

EKU
at Ohio
at Xavier
UTC
Akron
at Morehead State
at Toledo
3 Home Games (No teams yet) in the Global Sports Classic
at Illinois (GSC)

Marshall will also play in the Global Sports Classic which they have played in the last 3 year, they will get 3 home games and then travel to Champaign, Illinois to play Illinois.

NAIA school (exh)
NAIA - season opener
D2 team
D3 team
SWAC team on the road

RE: Looking Ahead to Next Year
With Western's OOC schedule, we have no shot at a at large bid, unless Western wins the Bahama tourney, or 29 or more games. Sometimes a schedule is better (or worse) after it plays out but on paper. Western's OOC schedule is awful, for the talent we have coming in. Then again most of that is 'paper' talent so maybe it's what they need.

There is one thing that might give Western a push, that other CUSA schools wont get.... it's possible if Western is killing it once conference play starts the press from having a top ranked recruiting class could give a small boost. Middle might get that also if they keep rolling like the last couple years. But I believe they take a step back. Could be big or could be small, but a step back.

espn has destroyed the game I use to love...now we are looking at having to have a 29+ win season to get on the bubble

Gets worse every season...Simple formula for teams that are members of the 5 "blueblood benefit of the doubt conferences"...Don't leave your state until Jan. playing mostly all home games minus maybe a neutral site contest, by then you are 12-1 or 13-0.....Finish .500 or slightly worse in conference and you are in with an high RPI and a tough conference schedule that you somehow finished .500 or even 1 game under .500....MTSU, WKU finish 30-3 with an RPI in the 30's and the comm. will say not enough games against good teams, you guys are left out enjoy playing in NIT.....

Jarrod West will be playing in the "WV North South Classic" tonight in Charleston.

Those who go to practice say that West is giving everyone fits from his defense, especially Elmore.

Jarrod West hits a step back 3 to win the game for the North 108-105. West had 20 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists in the game.

No official word yet but the basketball gurus on HerdFans have said that is who is in the GSC this year. Ive seen both Herdmeister and HerOrBust mention Illinois. I assume they got their info straight from Dan.

Ok interesting. I've not heard anything yet from my Illinois family. I figured if the word was out I would of gotten phone calls. How we if it's just speculation then it makes sense.

I'll know soon though because I've already been making calls to find out.

The Global Sports Classic usually isn't announced until a few weeks before schedules come out. Most likely because they don't get the field finalized until late. Last year it was Ohio State, Marshall, Western Carolina, Jackson State and North Carolina Central. And from what I was told by one of those that follow Marshall basketball closely that they didn't have Western Carolina and Jackson State added until 2 days before Marshall released their schedule last year.

Marshall's Terrence Thompson Not Returning

Thompson will not be back for his senior year, he graduated in May. Thompson could be a grad transfer but as a pre-med major my guess is he hangs his sneakers up and concentrates on his education.

This means most likely Ajdin Penava will almost assuredly be the starter down low with Milan Mijovic, Christian Theineman, Phil Bledsoe, Dani Koljanin and Jannson Williams all in the rotation.

And again the X-Factor will be if Iran Bennett is ruled eligible by the NCAA.

UTEP's first opponent in the Puerto Rico Tip Off Classic is Boise St and it will be on espnu. Second game will either be South Carolina or Illinois St depending on outcomes. Boise St is coming off an NIT appearance and will have 3 starters back.

MT draws the class of the Ivy League at the Diamondhead Classic. Raiders v Princeton in the first round.
