Very interesting regarding EIU. So in essence, the Summit is on it's deathbed if it loses EIU men's soccer, or IPFW, or WIU, or Omaha, or ORU or Denver. No baseball or men's soccer team are available within two years, as DII transitions take longer then that.
One sport can save them and that's football, if it adds from the west. But there are poster here that would absolutely deny that logical answer. UND didn't join to be in a deathbed conference.
But those schools in the west are already in a FB centric conference...
...or UND just wanted to be in conference with other members that are slashing athletics budgets and reducing its sports offering. Seems like UND made the right move as they find themselves with like company.
If UND was really serious about slashing athletic costs, it would have cut FCOA, as it was the only Big Sky school that fully offers it. But the costs were non-revenue sports that it should have cut when it moved up. No athletically serious Big Sky school offers 21 sports. Yeah, we used to and Sac St still does.
Most of the BSC offers the bare minimum sports required of FCS...and none of them are breaking any doors down on a path to FBS, or whatever an athletically serious school means.
In the Big Sky, athletically serious to me means striving to win fb, mbb, wbb, and vb. So happens we won all four last year, even though our main sport is men's hockey. We should be good again in all five this year.
Just goes to show how certain fans want the Big Sky to get weaker so their teams can be competitive.

After all that UND is slashing programs and retreating to the Summit. Congrats.
Oh and there are maybe 3 schools, if that, that fit your definition. So basically you have written off 75% of the conference. Well done, you should stick to your Summit to the FBS dreams of delusion.

Football could save the Summit, but no one knows if anyone else from the Big Sky will want to be the one that saves a sinking ship. I'm wondering if there's any interest in the NCHC becoming part of the Summit. I think it would keep the league afloat unless they lose a school that offers one of the danger sports, or both.

Which schools in the Summit are slashing athletic budgets and reducing sports offerings? Omaha have some financial issues, but they aren't slashing nor cutting sports.
UND will struggle to compete in the Summit. Being top dog in the BSC is pretty easy. Being top dog in the Summit? You are fighting SDSU and NDSU with USD coming on strong. Those three schools would have finished 1, 2 and 3 in the BSC in Men's BB last season. And SDSU and USD would have dominated your Women's BB.

Its totally laughable when a Jack fan lectures on cuts when they compete in a 25 yd 6 lane pool. Either upgrade facilities or drop swimming. SDSU has far too many underfunded sports. At least UND had leadership to drop some.

RE: So who goes to the Summit?
On some days, the Dakota and Montana landgrants-and-flagships are finally going to break through and realize their half-century old dream of being in an FBS conference together.
On other days, the non-UND Dakota flagships-and-landgrants are jumped-up cow colleges that are barely able to survive in D-I and cannot compare to the glory of the Fighting S****.
What day is today?

There isn't going to be any new, actual info, or movement by the Summit, for several months at best. All the likely scenarios to answer the OP have been said and repeated. And NoDak has peed in everyones' cereal enough to last a good while.

The xDSU's aren't wanted by any other conference, even in their own. But everything is so fine and dandy to them in their usual ignorance. Even the MVFC only allowed NDSU in because SDSU almost backed out of their deal. Nobody wants them, even though they have done stellar in some sports, but they choose to be ignorant and blind.
Meanwhile, the Montanas moved hell and high water to get UND and USD invites, but that move is erroneously looked at as fabricated Fullerton's folly by Big Sky cheapie fans. Big Sky fans don't think any President voted on the topic, which is total garbage.
Just trying to bring some of the posters up to the literacy rate with logic on this board.

RE: So who goes to the Summit?
The Western Illinois AD speaks honestly about Summit realignment without panicking their fans.
He states that IPFW is almost surely gone, Omaha is looking, and they don't have their head in the sand as far as realignment. That's pretty telling that the Summit doesn't have a future in the traditional Midwest, but the posters here will still be in denial anyway and the name calling will continue out of their gross ignorance. W Ill almost assuredly has a hot line connection to the OVC.

The one thing that can save the Summit League is Big Sky schools and sponsoring football.

UND joined to oversee the demolition and total remodel of a conference in tough shape. Denver is like a bonus room over the garage.

And NoDak mischaracterizes (or maybe just misreads) the article.
Quote:He states that IPFW is almost surely gone, Omaha is looking, and they don't have their head in the sand as far as realignment.
What he ACTUALLY says:
Quote:Also adding to the headache of IUPUI’s departure is that the Horizon League may not be done expanding. The conference stands at 10 members, but has expressed desire to add anywhere from two to six more schools in the coming years, making Summit schools such as Fort Wayne or Omaha possibly desirable for the league.
“I can’t speak for the (Summit) league, I can’t speak for the commissioner, but from my seat, when you look at the map again you talk about fit and you talk about geography and you talk about footprint, you look at where Fort Wayne is situated relative to the other Horizon League schools and I think that’s sort of a logical conclusion anyone could reach, so yeah, it’s one of those things we have to be mindful of moving forward,” Tanney said.
So it's all premised on the Horizon going to 12--which is not certain, and the Horizon doesn't have much reason to do so. All he's doing is looking at the same maps we are and looking at the Horizon profile.
Quote:That's pretty telling that the Summit doesn't have a future in the traditional Midwest, but the posters here will still be in denial anyway and the name calling will continue out of their gross ignorance.
A conference is a hard thing to kill in the NCAA. A Division I autobid conference hasn't died in 20 years. WAC is still around. So the Summit can probably continue to cling to existence for a while with NCAA waivers, either leaning on schools to add a sport or two, bringing up a Division II school, or getting someone from the OVC or Atlantic Sun.
Quote:W Ill almost assuredly has a hot line connection to the OVC.
That's nowhere in the article, just saying.
Quote:http://www.mcdonoughvoice.com/sports/201...ce-changes
The one thing that can save the Summit League is Big Sky schools and sponsoring football.
That may or may not be true--the Horizon doesn't have much incentive to go to 12. But even if it is true, that doesn't create an obligation on the part of Big Sky schools to save the Summit.
Actually there's something else that can save the Summit--NCAA waivers and rules changes. Like happened with the WAC.

So a school that was in Division II within current recruits' lifetimes is now a big swinging **** who's gonna tell everyone what's what. That's reasonable and sane and not completely unhinged at all.
