RE: If you could create your dream conference for football
Assuming EVERY school in my list is playing at the alloted full 85 FBS scholarships, stadiums are a minimum of 30,000 and here we go:

The Mountain East Conference (would have to buy all rights, etc from the current d2 conference already named MEC)

- West Virginia
- Marshall
- James Madison
- Kentucky
- Louisville
- Appalachian State
- East Tennessee State
- Western Carolina
- Virginia Tech

Will never happen but it is a "dream conference"

Not "trying" to nitpick, but why not throw Pittsburgh in there? Pittsburgh is definitely an Appalachian city and Pitt would bring in rivalries with VaTech and WVU.

And yeah, that's a pretty good regional conference.

8 team G5 conference to maximize.

-CFP revenue, split bowl pool $$$ 8 ways.
-NCAA tournament bids, split the pie less ways.
-TV deal money split.
-Easier for 1 really good team to dominate and bring up the conference.
-Less bowl slots needed so can go higher quality per slot.
-Less conference games, more flexibility to schedule P5's at home.

As someone who's team played in an eight team conference for a long time, you'd rather have 9 teams. Everyone gets 4 confernence home games and getting 5 OoC games a year is a pain in the ass.

I guess I just keep Pitt in a conference with Penn State and Syracuse.

That would be a great league except I would leave OSU and Michigan in the BIG and in place of them add WV and Cinci

WVU would be a logical choice, but aside from the fact that we lost to them all the time, I never really enjoyed playing them.

RE: If you could create your dream conference for football
IMO, a Dream Conference wouldn't have more than 12 teams. You can only play so many conference games. I like the 8-Conference / 4-OOC game setup the best.

Now, part of a dream would be to ADD two games to college football in regular season, for a 14 game season. That way, you could still have an Even # of Conference Games (10) + still keep 4 OOC.

In a 12-team conference, you could play more in the other division, which IMO is more important to keeping it Solid than pouring on a ton more teams in the same one (what does That accomplish??).

12-team conference (6 / 6 per Division): Play everyone in your division (5) + 5 of 6 in the other division. + A Full 4-OOC game schedule.

RE: If you could create your dream conference for football
How about a 13-team conference, playing a 12-game round robin schedule?

SEC: -Missouri
B1G: -Nebraska
XII: +Missouri, +Louisville, +Pittsburgh
ACC: -Louisville, -Pittsburgh, +Notre Dame
PAC: +Nebraska

AAC: +UMass
MWC: +BYU
SBC: +NMSU, +Liberty, +ODU
MAC: +Army
CUSA: -ODU

With the Conference Championship games gone, the playoff expands to 16 teams and the P5 would likely host 7 of the 8 opening round games.

Why not throw a Utah State or Weber in there? That's a long way to Boise and Montana.

RE: If you could create your dream conference for football
I'll take the current scenario as the ideal, but to play along:

Some sort of alternate reality Big8 of the past:
Utah
Colorado
Nebraska
Kansas
Mizzou
Illinois
Iowa
Minnesota

Alternately, a less desirable B1G/PAC of the future:
West (8) UW, UO, CAL, STANFORD, UCLA, USC, AZ, ASU
Central (8) UU, CU, NEB, IOWA, MN, ILL, WISC, NW
EAST (8) IU, PU, MSU, UM, OSU, PSU, RU, MD

RE: If you could create your dream conference for football
Just for the heck of it, I created a 20 team league.

10 game conference schedule in football. 4 division 2 in each other division rotate every year. 18 game basketball schedule - home and away in division, 10 remaining games vs. the 15 other division teams. Rotate and play 2 other divisions each year.

North
-----
Michigan
Notre Dame
Ohio State
Penn State
Syracuse

East
-----
Duke
Louisville
North Carolina
Tennessee
Virginia Tech (Play UVA OOC every year, twice in BKB)

South
-----
Alabama
Clemson
Florida State
Georgia
Mississippi

West
-----
Kansas
LSU
Nebraska
Oklahoma
Texas

NAU has zero history with Utah State. Weber doesn't excite me
