Whoops. Yep, you're right. I got misinformation from someone at work.

RE: This seasons best college football games
Speaking of best college football games, ESPNU just launched their Top 25 College Football Games of 2016 and the Toledo/BYU matchup was featured at #24. It aired on Monday at 10pm...I watched up until the final drive of the game by BYU. It's hard to fathom how our defense was that bad, we could not contain the outside whatsoever. I'm really hoping LB Taafe has put a lot of work in this offseason because boy he misses a lot of tackles.

Taafe IMHO is just too slow to play LB. He should put on weight and play DL instead.

I believe Taafe played injured last season.

Then he shouldn't have been on the field. Every time there was a huge run I would rewind the play and notice that #17 didn't make the tackle or was too slow to get to where he should have been.

I realize that we try not to criticize players by name on here, as they are still kids, however, how else do we discuss this obvious weakness in our defense?

+1 on all accounts.

It is certainly an area of concern that if it's not improved this season, we're going to be in the same position as last season (i.e. not winning the MAC championship). If we had three Ja'Wuan Woodley's at LB, I'd like our chances a lot more.

RE: This seasons best college football games
Losing LB Jaylen Coleman to the Achilles injury, DT Earl Moore in the Maine game, DT Treyvon Hester getting injured in the Ohio game then missing the Akron, NIU, and Appalachian State games after graduating 3 All MAC players on the DL and 2 backups in 2016 certainly helped to keep the Rockets from having a better year in 2016. Still only giving up 25.7 points (20.8 in 2016)a game is far better than the almost 30 points a a game over the last 5 seasons. In 2017, UT's Defense needs to give up 20 points or less and get back to being a top Red Zone stopper.

I wouldn't call that "criticizing." But I do think there is more context. That BYU RB "BYU's career leader in rushing yards (3,901), attempts (726), 100-yard games (16), single-game rushing yards (286)" was a LOT more than we'd assumed and he went on to show it through the season. I also recall at the time board members putting the weight of the blame on the defensive allignment choices, not the players. I don't see any reason to dispute that on any number of replays. Their coach did a better job than our coach. It happens.

Got burnt in coverage by BYU and Ohio .

I was there... they were gassed. BYU was too by the end of the game. Rocket D played very well when you take the altitude into consideration.
IMO Taafe will be a stud this year.

Gave up 75 yds(586 Total Yards-248yds passing) of Offense and a score on the first play from scrimmage for BYU. No score there and Rockets are winners in Provo. Got burnt by OU for back to back 57 yd and 33 yd TD's in the 2nd quarter at the Glass Bowl. Again if the Defense didn't allow one of the TDs, Rockets win.

If they hadn't given up any for the year we're undefeated and Top Five.

i was at the byu game. defense was indeed gassed. taafe wasn't the only one. adeniyi only played about 10 snaps in the 2nd half. other guys could barely make it off the field when they got subbed out. long trip, late night altitude. big stage. a couple emotional 2nd quarter defensive stands. but in the second half with a fresh NFL running back coming at you every few minutes cause your offense couldn't score slow enough...team got worn down.

taafe has ability, but had some bad games last year. woodley needs to improve his consistency too and we need better depth for both. is olekanma healthy?

Yep I've always been saying that below 20 points a game is level that needs to be done by the defense.

That would be a top 20 performance so yeah sure. WMU was 15th last year.
