No, I just had to get out of there, overtaxed and many stupid regs, government unions control the state. It used to be a great place, but the best days are in the past.

RE: California's Travel Ban - Ramifications
Public Unions. Besides janitors I don't think there are any private sector unions that have any numbers.

Actually their power is weakening, except in a few cities, as local governments and the State also move toward more contractors and reduce the number of full time union workers. It'll probably take another decade to be fully recognized. Of course the GOP is in no position to exploit that due to their anti-Hispanic (39% of voters) and anti-Asian (14% of voters) rhetoric. The result is the Democratic party is showing three distinct factions.

One is blue collar (mostly Hispanic) of the Union sort. This is the one that advocates big projects and large government programs. They are the foot soldiers of the democratic party, they run the phone banks.

Another can best be described as upper middle class and white (some Asian) NIMBY, which runs under the Green banner, and is pro-Oligarch Capitalist (Elon Musk, Steve, Jobs, Larry Ellison types who get massive tax breaks and subsidies for their projects). The NIMBY group focus is on keeping the ritzy neighborhoods beautiful, the high paying jobs and industries that they work in subsidized via tax and other breaks, and the places they visit as clean as possible. This NIMBY group has mostly replaced the suburban Republican moderates, by removing the muck-rucking and social conscience elements. You are more likely to focus on saving the whales than lifting a finger for the lower half -- religious duty is not part of the formula. (California is very likely the most class segregated state in the nation due to housing costs). This group is the money bags of the party. Both large and small donors

The third wing of the party here is the Progressives. It's a grab bag of malcontents and dreamers. Every type of person described by Eric Hoffer in the true believer belongs to this wing. They push single payer, the punishing of banks and the rich -- they are in a constant battle with the NIMBY's over business policy. These are the activists, the protesters, et al. They constantly recruit students (who often morph as they get older into NIMBY Greens) and are the bridge to minority communities.

The Black Democrats are insignificant in California save a few neighborhoods, as they make up less than 5% of the population of the State and by simply math barely over 10% of the Democratic party. I believe a similar dynamic exists in Washington (State).

The GOP is pretty much dead here, excepting a few parts of Southern California and the Central Valley. So describing the three main factions of it makes little sense. But since they cannot compete for a single Statewide office and hold around 29% of the seats, they just don't matter much -- now and again one of them will cross the aisle and vote with Democrat faction to get some bill passed, but mostly they are ignored, and so irrelevant to California policy.

I live in Alabama right now but I'm a native born Californian. I think your opinion is affected by something else other than what you wrote. Yes, taxes suck but the state tax is not that horrible. And how the the regulations actually affect you on a day to day basis?

It's all the same ish in a different toilet IMO. Now if we want to talk about housing costs that's another story....That's a complete rip off in California.

You and I rarely agree but we do on this.

This is a political thread--and was always intended to be.

Lmao, funny thought.

When someone has to preface a sentence with "Not to be....." That's always what they are alluding to.

Retail I believe is 7.5%, property is 1% but can vary depending on your city (I pay 1.1), mello Roos sucks a bit; but the killers are home prices and gas taxes. Gas is way too damn expensive here. The home prices are a supply problem as in not enough. If it was possible to drop the home prices, lower the gas taxes on the gallon, and reverse some of the draconian gun laws; California would be a utopia. IMHO. Sadly I don't have a magic wand to make this happen.

This is true. UCLA and Cal don't need money games. Fresno and SJSU do.

And its going to really hurt Bakersfield.

---

The NCAA will probably try to accommodate the bigger California schools in tournaments. They might just leave SLO or Fullerton out to avoid a problem.

Remember the NCAA doesn't want a high profile forfeit. This would actually put pressure on many of their own institutions to do something to combat the discriminatory bills in general and at some of their institutions specifically. They want this thing to be really quiet.

So a feel good law that the rich schools ignore via private funds and the middle class and poor schools suffer greatly from thus further increasing the financial divide.

Typical of most feel good laws promoting an agenda

Unfortunately, you're going to find that more and more as political divisiveness and bitterness creep into different facets of society. It's both political and yet on topic since it does impact scheduling and may impact the way conferences work down the road if we keep going down this path as a country.

I mean, if you would have told me 10 years ago that the NFL would take a quasi-official stance on the usage of police force, I would have said you were full of it, but here we are.

I think people forget that the coaches, the ADs and the employees of the athletic departments are state employees, and they are also not allowed to go to these states. I do not think even private funds will do because they are not exempt in the ban.

I think twice before I believe these type reports, especially when it is a Dem Mayor making them. Despite the "Doom and Gloom" predictions, 2016 was a record Tourism year for NC. I prefer to see the actual number, sadly the media never goes back and say hmm, maybe we exaggerated a bit about the impact. I really hate journalism has become dead profession.

Here is the story from Louisville media:

https://insiderlouisville.com/metro/omni...nventions/

The Omni is actually still under construction - the 2018 convention would have been a huge pickup.
