It won't. Too logical to close a non functional government operation and have the closest university (Tech, 5 miles) take in its students. Not a shot at ULM, would benefit all. Except the leadership at Grambling, who should be unemployed.

I believe Grambling had their nursing program shut down when nobody was able to pass their nursing exams

It was but it looks like it is coming back

RE: My impressions of the ULM campus
I believe ULM was in the Southland Conference with us, ULL, and UTA way back in the day. They were with us in the American South that the Sunbelt merged with. They've been a part of this core group for at least the 30 years that I remember. They have a good Pharmacy school and have had National Championship water skiing teams. I'm sure they have other things going for them, but I'm no expert since I pretty much just follow what StAte does.

They suffer most of the same issues most of our schools face.....lack of perception and cash. None of us can say at this point in our respective school's history that we are the state's flagship university. We are all making strides, but we have a long way to go.

There seems to be cycles involved when it comes to athletics. For example, North Texas ruled the roost in football for 5 years or so.......then we beat them the last 11 times we played before they left for what they thought were greener pastures (yeah, right). Troy has been on a downward slope in football and is now headed uphill. Texas State struggles on the field....as least right now. Who will be on top in 15 years? Who knows? (These were just examples other than us that came to mind)

We at StAte are about the same level now in terms of facilities and attendance that the Arkansas razorpiglets were 35 years ago. We don't have a problem that time and money can't fix. Neither does ULM. These "flagship" schools have a big headstart in terms of money given over time.

State politics plays more of a role in some of our schools than others. But we've all seen certain prejudices aimed toward the schools we love and support. I said all this to say that......we are all in the same boat. Possibly in varying degrees, but that too can change on a legislative whim, a jacked up economy, or one poor hiring decision. I wouldn't say too much against ULM right now because in 10 years......it may be your school we are discussing.

Wow, there are just too many months between basketball season and football!!!!

Talk about summer burnout.

I read all 11 pages hoping this topic would bring Kolton Browning's brother out of retirement.

Anybody besides me remember dude? I can't remember his screen name but I usually referred to him as the Uncle Rico of Men's Basketball. He faded out after Kolton finished up but dude was a blast.

+3 rep points to any old salt that remembers dude's name.

I was also surprised by USA's endowment when I first learned what it was. I think the med school probably figures into why it's so big (TWSS), and it does make me wonder if USA could be a bit of a sleeping giant academically if they were to ever make a big push to expand their research and reputation.

Were they still in the SLC during that time frame?

After looking at the threads he authored, dude spent a lot of time looking at police blotters and living vicariously thru his bro. Almost like HE was waiting on the payday.
Kolton was a great player but his brother thought he was like a 3rd round draft pick. They would get mad if you said his arm wasn't strong and would say they could get Kolton to throw us the ball to show us. That Kolton has read comments. Lol

Yeah it was kinda weird and they would get mad if you said Kolton was 6-1 because they claim he was 6-3 but listed at 6-1.

ULM joined the SBC years after the Cajuns. Ask any ULM fan the admission price, I'm not going there.

Read where ULM joined for football only in 2001 and as a full member in 2006. It seems like we played you guys every year even during our dark ages. (pre-Roberts)

Kolton was a great example of someone that can be a GREAT college player but not destined for the pros. He always lit us up. I remember some health issues later in his career but I liked the kid as a baller. Didn't like what he did to us.

His brother was a trip though. I'm guessing he's still tearing up a church league in hoops nowadays.

RE: My impressions of the ULM campus
To address the original post. In a probably Tl;DR

Athletic Facilities

Football Field- 4.5 Million dollar Ops building, last year, Weight room Reno two years ago. Using the extra space to get a new training room complete with all the fancy Hot tub/ cold tub stuff, and maybe a water treadmill.

The bones of the football stadium are also pretty good. We have indoor suites on both sides, outdoor suites, and an indoor club section on the big side (so we don't need to build them). Both endzones have multiple party areas for donors/ rent.

The L Club is one of them, and is the best deal in sports. If I was still in Monroe I would be all over that. We seem to have been ahead of the game in terms of fan experience. Malone stadium is probably the most alcohol friendly stadium in the country.

Basketball Stadium- Needs a reno. Maybe we can get the new stadium the city keeps talking about to be built on campus.

Track/soccer- Built next year, soccer will share, and they have their own practice facility/ extra field which includes a house as a locker room.

Baseball- Lockers recently renno'd? Once again fan experience is great with plenty of party areas.

Softball Pretty New Facility/ new turf.

Golf Brand New off Campus practice facility. The Golf house also got a lot of fun new toys last year.

Beach volleyball 3 new courts added this year.

RE: My impressions of the ULM campus
Campus Wise we have renovated most of the inside of the buildings.

Recently Built: Since about 2000

The Library (although was a bit earlier but still looks great)

4 dorms including an apartment complex on campus.

The International Student Center- a one of a kind facility that helps the adjustment of the international population, and holds fundraising events.

The nursing hall

The business building

The quad- Totally re-done
Recently Renovated

Sandal Hall- The front door of the university. Impressive technology, first thing prospective students see.

Walker hall- the freshman gen ed classrooms

The Student Union

Bayou park- Turned a road into green space

About to be Renovated/ Built

Garett Hall- For the Medical School

Stubbs Hall- Visual art Classes

The Swimming Pool (into a events Center)

The Alumni Center

The L Club Building

We have only about 7/8 buildings that have yet to be touched.

In Louisiana it is about building smarter, not with more expense. You can be La Tech, and build impressive looking olympic sized swimming pools with money you don't have , or you could be us, and remodel in a systematic smart fashion With out legislature its about survival not gaudiness. We have built, and in my opinion we have built in an intelligent manner.

I can see why you don't like the campus tough. Its brown brick, so it is not for everyone. If you like Grambling I'm guessing your a red brick guy. From what ive heard their buildings are somewhat in disrepair from the inside however which is not something that is beneficial for a school.

Pizza snobs. I hope ULM has an Idaho in 2016 season, to include a loss to App State.

The state needs to close these and NWST , Nicholls , McNeese

This is my biggest beef with ULL/ La Tech fans. I feel like tech/ ULL fans want other schools to be closed in the belief that it will enhance their own school. This is not something that needs to happen when all the schools are fighting for survival. We all need to work together at this point to save every school not named LSU instead of acting in a selfish manner. BTW I have heard Mcneese has by far the best finances in the state, so they are going to be the last UL system school to shut down.

As much as I'd love to see ULM merge into La Tech, I doubt that any of the regional universities in Louisiana will ever be merged. Instead, we'll continue to have to deal with funding cuts as the state moves to eliminate duplication of degrees at our schools. This will accomplish the same goal that merging some universities would have. At some point, state funding for athletics will take such a hit at schools that some tough decisions will have to be made. That's when fan support and alumni giving will determine what kind of athletic program a university can have. Football ticket sales will be the main determining factor in what kind of athletic program we'll each have.
