RE: NBA D-League news (WAC related)
SoCalBobCat has a problem with me. I got under his skin a couple years ago, so he will argue about anything I say. Even to the point of redundant idiocy like here. Childish.

I have no idea why he is a fan of Looney, or why he thinks it's impossible in the NBA to move players, including low pay ones in salary dumps. The Warriors and in fact most NBA teams dump players who don't make an impact in their first two years. It's not uncommon in a 2nd round pick swap (W's want a 2nd pick, maybe find another McCaw level player, will trade a future 2nd and some cash) to make a small salary dump. Failing that of course they'll just cut him and eat his salary. But Looney wont have a roster spot; this is the point that SoCalBobcat refuses to recognize, that Looney wont be on the Warriors bench, whether he gets dump traded or simply cut. So he responds again and again refusing to understand that point (why I call him stupid). Watch him respond to this again.

"Socal" (in quotes as you are clearly more Texan), I totally get it that the NBA wants to try to make it impossible for the Warriors to keep all their players without going into luxury tax. But both Lacob and Meyer have let it be known they will tolerate paying some luxury tax, so any analysis of the roster must assume some luxury tax. Not as high as Portland and Cleveland are now, but some. Winning is far far more important than $1.2M, and they have shown that eating $905K of another players salary they released, so that a ore productive player can have the spot. This is the point you miss.

I wouldn't have a problem with golden state winning it this year if it wasn't for Zaza I suck balls Pachulia.

No, I don't have a problem with you other than your inaccurate posts:

1. You keep insisting that Kevon Looney is gone even though no one has actually said that and the Warriors picked up his option for next year. You act as if you know more than Bob Myers and Jerry West.

2. The NBA is not trying to "make it impossible for the Warriors to keep all their players without going into the luxury tax" as you keep stating. The Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) was not negotiated between the players and the owners to screw the Warriors over.

3. I could care less about Looney. Warriors management has four players under contract for next season, one of them being Looney. Cutting Looney means paying him $1.1 million plus the likely luxury tax hit on that salary of as much as $2 million. NBA teams are not going to do the Warriors any favors by taking on his salary. That is why they either spend the next season developing his skills or they cut him and eat the salary. It was Warrior management that decided to extend his contract.

This started as a thread about NBA D-League news (WAC related). You mentioned that the Warriors might pick-up Pascal Siakam this off-season and I pointed out to you that Siakam was under contract with Toronto for next season, plus another two which are team option years. I think it went downhill from there...

RE: NBA D-League news (WAC related)
The Warriors target is roughly $127M. That is the hard luxury cap. The soft one is 20% over the $102M Cap, which is about $122.4M (Jeff Zillgit reported he was told $102M and $124M). Wojnarowski puts the tax cap at $121, which means the exceptions are good up to $127M.

That $127M is the number the Warriors are targeting.

Green, Thompson, and McCaw are under contract for two more years. As is Jones (they are high on him), and one more year for Looney (they are not high on him). And they have another $946K on the books for a trade and retirement buyout.

They will pay Curry Super Max of $35.7M (5 years almost $200M), and Durant Max of $30.6M (2 years, he's not eligible for Super Max). They will also pay Igoudala who's deal is almost done, likely between $8 and $12M of the $22M the Warriors have to play with. The rest will be minimums, possibly one tax payer MLE.

Tim Kawakami indicates the team thinks Livingston is 50-50, and that Ian Clark will be offered too much for them to match (talk ranges from $6M to $8M to $9M). So they are likely looking for 3 veterans who can plug and maybe buying another 2nd round pick (am told they have 6 players targeted as possibles if the fall into their hands)

http://www.mercurynews.com/2017/06/16/ka...nd-others/

I only post this because SoCalBobcat thought my $127M budget target I said Meyers had made me a "bad GM", when I was merely reporting rumors from local reporters of the team. These signings will take the core of the current Warriors through the 2019-20 season, possibly beyond. The NBA squeezed the cap growth this year to try and break the Warriors, but it's more likely to break the Cavs. In a couple years they will have to loosen it to meet the CBA and that is just when the Warriors will be resigning Klay Thompson (or not).

For SoCalBobcat on the subject of W's trying to move Looney

Kerr loves McAdoo. I'll guess Bell is targeted for Looney's roster spot, if they can off-load Looney.

Sources: Golden State acquired Jordan Bell from the Bulls for cash. A lot of it.

RE: NBA D-League news (WAC related)
Stu, McAdoo is a restricted free agent. Kawakami should stop guessing. McAdoo will get a $1.7 million offer as a restricted free agent from the Warriors and he will likely test the market to see if he can do better. The Warriors can match any offer, but they have financial limits.

Looney is under contract. No team is going to do the Warriors a favor and pick up the contract of an injured player. Bell was a nice pick-up. That will help fill the roster. They need about another six players to fill the 15 man roster.

RE: NBA D-League news (WAC related)
This is completely OT now (I'm OK Josh if you want to close this thread), but an update:

Washington purchased a franchise (the 27th) and will launch a G League team in 2018-19

New Orleans plans a 2018-19 franchise, and 4 cities have bids: Pensacola (FL), Jackson (MS), Baton Rouge (LA), and Shreveport (LA). Mobile (AL) dropped out. My handicap: Shreveport is the farthest away, has the weakest market, doesn't have the facilities in place and on top is a political mess. Baton Rouge has everything, but is too close to New Orleans (Pelican ticket sales cannibalism) and a franchise there would be 2nd fiddle to LSU (would play in LSU's Maravich Assembly Center) - mayor admits the bid is an exploration exercise. Jackson and Pensacola seem the most likely to win. Pensacola more attractive city, but Jackson has political forces better aligned. Decision by end of year.

Denver and Portland have no concrete plans. Gotta be lonely in a year's time when they're the last ones out

********************************

Warriors update:

Curry (5yr Super Max), Durant (2yr Cap Space), Igoudala (3yr Cap Space), Livingston (2yr+3rd Cap Space), West (1yr min) all re-signed
Omri Casspi (1yr min), Nick Young (1yr MLE) singed as well

Under contract already: Green (2yrs), Thompson (3yrs), McCaw (1yr+), Jones (1yrs+), Looney (1+)
Not yet signed: Jordan Bell (2nd round pick)
2-way contract: Chris Boucher (can be on roster up to 47 days; plus April onward as well, once G League season ends)

The Warriors have 13 under contract, with Pachulia expected to sign (either minimum $2.3M or 20% bump on non-bird rights $3.5M). Also SF Michael Beasely is in serious talks for a minimum contract. The Warriors are also looking at some candidates for a backup PG (Tyler Ennis and Trey Burke are the two names mentioned locally). They'd like JaVale McGee back, but if he is offer significantly over the $2.1M minimum he will not come back - Clippers are interviewing him.

On Looney:
It's looking very likely the Warriors will need to open a roster spot to get down to 14 or 15 (Pachulia, Beasley and Burke would make 16). Consensus opinion it's Looney who goes. Kawakami reports the Warriors are trying to offload him - that Bell was drafted to take his spot. Marcus Thompson has reported the same, but added the Warriors might simply eat his salary and cut him. Connor Letourneau reported this summer league (July 8, 10, 11 games in Las Vegas) are critical for his future. Looney knows it and is working 5 hours a day while the other vets are on R&R.

Minor point on the opton ofreleasing Looney. Warriors can either just eat the $1.4M up front or can use the stretch provision, to spread it over 2, 3, 4 or 5 years (5 years comes to $294,276 per year, lower Luxury tax by over $1M in '17-18, and cutting his saves over $6.5M in tax and salary '18-19). Warriors would also be off the hook on the player option years of 2018-19 and 2019-20.

I'll bring this a little bit back to topic.. though not 100% on it. Former Cougar Mashawn Chamberlain has signed on to play for the Pelicans Summer League team in Las Vegas. He was a member of the team that participated in the CIT. He wasn't a major contributor, but he must've continued improving his game to get this look.

RE: NBA D-League news (WAC related)
Stu, you need to let go of this hatred of Kevon Looney. The guy is only 21 and he has been injured. There is no questioning his basketball talent when healthy. He was a McDonald's All-American and five star high school prospect. He left after one year at UCLA to become a first round pick of your Warriors. He needs to stay healthy and he needs playing time. He is going to get paid, but he needs to play.

These writers are guessing. They have the Warriors signing everyone. Let's see how everyone looks in Summer League before determining the roster. The rosters have been expanded to 17 in order to stash two players in the G League.

The NBA stretch provision for Looney could only be used for three years. He has one year on his contract plus a team option. The stretch provision is not meant for a player making $1.4 million.

By the way, the Warriors have blown through their $127 million salary target. That was easy to predict. That is even with Durant taking at least $6 million less than he was expected to take.

On Jordan Bell, I like the kid. He is very good defensive player and he brings it every night. But he is a rookie. Some of the Bay Area writers have him in the eight man rotation already. His offensive game is not that good and like every young player, he needs to develop.

Looney is closer to gone.

Warriors up to 14 with Pachulia (took the non-bird 20%)
https://twitter.com/sam_amick/status/883466978467258368

They are talking with Willie Reed if JaVale McGee signs elsewhere (he is doing his tour now, Clippers yesterday and Kings today) for a 15th. That will make a 5th center plus there is Draymond.

They are also looking for a backup point. But somebody has to go. All the local press is saying that will be Looney.

SoCalBobcat78, your "they will keep Looney" is hanging on by the barest of threads. They pretty much have to dump him this year, eat $1.4M if nobody takes him, because next year his salaray is scheduled to jump to $2.3M which has an additional Luxury tax hit of $4.6M, even if they cut him next year.

Yes they need cheap bodies, but they have two draft picks in 2018, and the way luxury tax works it escalates. This year if they dump him they have a lot more space. You don't save $1.4M now to pay $6.9M next year and $12.5M the year after for a guy who doesn't play.

Cap is off because Igoudala got more than expected, and they used the MLE. It's coming in around $135.5M ($140M in actual money, but vets minimums are counted at 3rd year player level). Luxury tax expected to be $22-25M ($45M over cap). Next year about $40M ($80M over cap). The important thing is to get below tax level in 2019-20, and they set up contracts to expire before them. One of the pieces will have to be moved in 2019-20. Probably Klay and Livingston.

Wow, just saw a NBCBA add for Warriors summer league,

"Patrick McCaw, Damien Jones, and Jordan Bell take on the Cavaliers in Summer league on your NBC Bay Area network..."

Who is the one missing from the current Warriors NBA roster?

It could be an oversight. But having worked with a few Silicon valley companies, with their periodic layoffs, and knowing this is the corporate culture Joe Lacob comes from, every missing name on the presentation was gone within a few weeks (or sooner) of the "oversight." The next 4 days, 3 summer league games, are Looney's last chance to be around for training camp this fall.

RE: NBA D-League news (WAC related)
Stu, I thought this was a fair article on why Looney should be on the roster:

https://www.goldenstateofmind.com/2017/7...son-review

I particularly thought this paragraph encompasses what I have been saying to you:

"What we do know is that the Warriors have picked up Looney’s $1.47M option for the 2017-18 season; as with Curry, Thompson, Harrison Barnes before him, they can afford to be patient with him. Like them, he’s a first round pick who’s cost-controlled for another 2-3 years. With pricy vet contracts clogging up the cap and pushing the team into luxury tax hell for the foreseeable future, it behooves the Warriors to get contributions from cheap, young players like Looney, McCaw, Jones, and the two new Ducks. If team medical staff deems he’s damaged goods physically, that’s one thing, but for now I think it would be needlessly rash to cut ties with him for any other reason."

Looney was the 14th or 15th guy on the Warrior roster last season. A tough place to be and get playing time. Since only 13 players are active per game, the other two guys are in street clothes. Usually a coach in a regular season game goes with a ten man rotation, so even the other three guys that are active get limited playing time. If you have ever played the game of basketball, you will understand that playing time is the only way you get better.
