We're going to build a wall to keep Liberty out, and we're going to make them pay for it!
In all seriousness, the scoreboard is probably the best usage. Makes future expansion that much easier and we get an impressive jewel to add to our new stadium.

This includes though LED ribbons, a new sound system and construction costs as well. The board itself costs $3.5MM
So if ODU went with a somewhat more reasonable board with no added upgrades I could see it going up for $5-6MM. If so a $1+MM payday from Liberty certain helps put a dent in that.
This is all just speculation though and my calculations could be wildly off base.

Not a bad idea at all. Considering Liberty will have a better stadium that us, even after Phase 1, anything we can do to spruce up the place and get us closer to Phase 2 would help. I'm a big proponent of Phase 1.5 which includes the west side suites, new end zone and scoreboard. The upper deck on the east side can wait. The suites should pay for themselves over time. The end zone and scoreboard will payoff with greater demand for seats and better recruits (due to more impressive stadium)

Somebody a guy that deals with scoreboards for a living. Asked how much it our jumbo screen would cost.
have a question. My school just announced their stadium. (Old Dominion University.)
In it they plan to have a HUGE Display.
Any idea as to how much something like this would cost?
How do you protect something like this in a storm? (Hurricanes)
What's the lead time on something this big to get built?
I couldn't tell you how much it would cost without knowing the size. A lot of the price has to do with the structural elements at the facility as well. I would assume a display that size (judging from the photo, approximately 40' tall by around 100' wide) would be right around a million bucks. The structure itself is what protects from storms, wind, and the like. We have great engineers on staff and have been in the billboard business forever, so we know how to keep signs up in awful conditions.
The lead time depends on the structure. If the structure is ready to roll, then so are we. We'd probably be able to get something operational at this scale in about 6-8 weeks.
Here's another we just did in Baltimore at Laurel Park horse track. You'll notice near the end of the video the addition of another row of cabinets along the bottom. They wanted to go bigger after the fact, and that section was installed about a month later.

A million is a lot, but not as much as I thought. I would think we could sell naming rights for the scoreboard, or get someone to donate $500,000 and increase ticket prices by $1 for 5 years and its paid for. Make it clear thats why the prices are going up by a dollar and I think most people would be ok with it. OR... beer sales. We'd make over $250,000 in beer alone in a season. Four years later... paid.

I hope they start a Capital Fund Raising Campaign for the 2nd Phase of the rebuild for SB Ballard Stadium anyway. If they promote and plan different naming right projects, incentive programs, dedication or memoriam plaques, special reward programs or even creative donation incentives. Example...A Wall of Honor, Walkway of Legends, Memorial Concourse Center, Hall of Fame Room or whatever. I would love to see it started and announce before this season gets going, they could get a lot of donations over the next year and a half.
