I thought this was supposed to be one of the feathers in the AAC's cap in geting a new deal. This really is surprising.

Maybe I'll be wrong, but this looks like it takes a chunk out of the next AAC deal. That game was one of the primary reasons I felt there would be plenty of bidding interest for the AAC media rights. There will still be interest, but 50% of the Army-Navy game was a nice shiny object to draw in the bigger 3-letter network players.

RE: CBS SPORTS TO REMAIN HOME OF ANNUAL ARMY-NAVY FOOTBALL CLASSIC THROUGH 2028
I said this on the AAC board: I thought that Navy was pretty clear that the Army-Navy Game was *always* going to be a completely separate deal for them and that was a contingency on agreeing to enter into the AAC. The separate TV deal for Navy's other home games was a different matter - it was understood that those would be rolled into the overall AAC conference TV package once the current contract expires. The Army-Navy Game, though, was ALWAYS going to be treated differently. (Of course, I also found it hypocritical that Navy's AD loudly complained about Boise State getting a special offer from the MWC when Navy knew that it was getting its own special offer of keeping all Army-Navy Game revenue.)

I am happy with this. CBS does two things very well. The Masters Tournament and the Army-Navy game.

Well, at least the AAC will have rights to the Navy-Notre Dame game every other year...right?

That should at least get the AAC a deal that includes 4 OTA games every year.

Except that Aresco has said multiple times in interviews that the Army-Navy game would be something that would help the next media deal. So--it may be that the revenue is shared....lol....or maybe he just misspoke...on multiple occasions....honestly, I dont think these people realize bulletin board guys are parsing their words to decipher contract terms....so we actually notice if details get exaggerated or conflict with previous statements.

Maybe you now the answer to this---who owns the rights to neutral site games like the Advocare Kickoff Game? Does the "home" team own the rights---or are the rights owned by the games promoter---like a bowl game?

I don't know whether it always works this way, but I do know that the TV rights to the 2016 BYU-Arizona game in Glendale were controlled by the PAC12, not the venue.

The gate proceeds were shared among BYU, Arizona, and the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority, with Arizona taking about 40%, BYU about 30%, and the ASTA about 30% - although the actual attendance favored BYU.

This is why Navy is always rumored with the mythical ND move to the ACC. Good news for the AAC, the ACC would never allow Navy to have such a deal, ACC would demand home game rights to be shared witht the conference.

However, as AC stated, it does make the TV deal more intriguing. 04-cheers

All the Armed forces home games are with CBS. Navy makes quite a bit from it's separate deals with Army and Notre Dame. Those have and always will be separate from the American. The American package is just a little extra on top, not the main income.

My recollection is consistent with Frank's. As a general observation, Navy's share of the Army-Navy game and Navy-Notre Dame games are worth quite a bit. Unless the rest of the AAC showed that it could bring equivalent value to the table, Navy would be foolish to give that up. However, I do expect that Navy's hosted games with Notre Dame will be part of the next AAC deal.

Well. Sort of, if you don't include AFA. CSU@AFA was on ESPNU. UNM-AFA from the Cotton Bowl (part of AFA's 'home' schedule) was on ESPNN. AFA's home games against Hawaii, Georgia St., and Abilene-Christian had no national TV coverage, from what I can tell. AFA's home games against Boise St. and Navy were on CBSSN, like most other quality MWC games (excluding Boise's home games, which were all on ESPN networks).

But, the point regarding the AAC is that Navy's home inventory is supposed to be weaved into the next AAC TV deal - which apparently excludes the Army-Navy game.

So are we thinking around $10 million for the game? That was the Forbes estimate.

I have to laugh at the AAC folks who keep claiming that Navy doesn't have a special deal. There was no way they were going to let Army get away with getting more TV $$ than them.

Ehhhh....that's not actually correct. The Air Force games are under the MW umbrella which is partially controlled by CBS (ESPN has some of them). The Army and Navy games are under separate CBS-Sports contracts. The Navy games are to become part of the regular AAC package when the current CBS deal expires. The only question is if the Army-Navy neutral site game was to be rolled into the next AAC deal. I think we got our answer today.

RE: CBS SPORTS TO REMAIN HOME OF ANNUAL ARMY-NAVY FOOTBALL CLASSIC THROUGH 2028
I found this from the original Navy joining the Big East. You have to think there must have been an extension clause that allowed Navy to keep the game. Only question is it one time only or renewable end of each contract? I find it ironic, Aresco represented CBS at that time.

From the article

"The Army-Navy game remains on that second Saturday in December," he said.

Gladchuk also said that Navy's television deals with CBS and CBS Sports Network had to be accommodated by the Big East.

"Partnership with CBS was one of the reasons this agreement took a little time to finalize," he said.

CBS owns the TV rights to the Army-Navy game and Navy's home games against Notre Dame through 2018. Navy has a separate deal with CBS Sports Network for the TV rights to its other home games that runs through 2017.

"We have a great relationship with the academies, and our deals will be grandfathered for the length of our contracts" said Mike Aresco, executive vice president for programming at CBS Sports.

Im telling you, Aresco has been saying for years that the Army-Navy game would be part of the new package---and it may be. Just because its been renewed separately doesn't necessarily mean the money isn't going into the shared pot (similar to Boise's ESPN deal). Of course, it also doesn't mean it IS going into the same pot either. Just don't know yet. My inclination is to think it is not being shared---but I base that more on a prior AAC history of negative outcomes when it comes to media more than any real facts.

Not when Army is going to be getting almost twice the amount as they would get from the AAC deal. Hey, if they did roll it into the AAC for distribution, then great...however, previous comments stated they would reserve the right to not include the game if the revenue wasn't their.

If Navy got/gets so much more money from the Army game with CBS, why would they ever want to willingly share and distribute that revenue with the AAC? Doesn't make sense to me.

The distinction is that Boise State is a "full member" of the MWC. Navy is a "single-sport, affiliate member" of the AAC.

Does anyone know if Navy is receiving a full football share from the AAC? If the Army-Navy game was not included, the AAC should have negotiated Navy's share way down. If the AAC didn't, they should find a lawyer that can read.
