JMU and cost of attendence
The dukies have decided to join the 21st century by including COA for men's and women's basketball. They are following Towson and Charleston's lead. Can the Tribe be far behind?

I don't think that the Administration views JMU, Towson and CoC as trend setters. In this instance it would appear that they are. How long it will take us to follow is probably a longer process than we would expect it to be.

I don't think there will be any thought of COA until a new president is in place. Having a new generation president and AD might be the only chance of getting a change

Totally agree.

And I say this with admiration and respect for the football-first lobby, but as things stand now, I'm not sure basketball gets COA until we can afford it for football too, which is to say never.

I'm not hating. I'm just saying.

There is zero benefit/impetus for doing it in football. Plus, if we did it for football we would likely have to do it for 63 women athletes. Men's and women's Basketball is the only sport where it makes sense to do it.

Basketball should get COA way before football... smaller money investment for bigger impact.

Plus, nowadays in D1 basketball, COA is almost standard cost of doing business. COA for football is currently not really done at the FCS level. Appealing to the football folks shouldn't be an issue.

If they get on board, William and Mary will almost be forced to. Most CAA schools will have it, and the SoCon requires it. If the Tribe refuses, you can expect your recruiting to suffer tremendously.

We don't need a lack of COA to pummel our recruiting.

We are getting smarter! Wrt footballers and coa; we at least try to play big league basketball. We play triple A football.

JMU COA was apparently announced almost a year ago. Are we just now figuring this out?

Relevant to this discussion, here is a quote from an article about the likely departure of UR's AD:

"Richmond may be interested, according to the sources, in transitioning to a basketball-centric AD, given that the Spiders flagship sport is men's basketball, the one with the most revenue-producing potential."

From the article it sounded like UR is in the "movin on up" mode and the AD was stuck in neutral. They're looking for something big.

The key here is to stay away from VCU.

Ever since they left the CAA, our fortunes and exposure have been ramping up.

For UR, the opposite. Since VCU joined the A10, UR has fallen off. They aren't even the #1 team in their own hometown.

UR could move to the Big East in bbl, that's the only upward move out there. Even here though, I think VCU has now generated more interest.

Agreed (though I think UR to Big East is a pipe dream for them). I don't see how UR would ever move up before VCU.

VCU has a Final Four this century, is in the midst of 7 straight NCAA appearances, has sold out over 100 straight home games, has won 24+ games for 11 years straight (only Kansas has such an active streak), a rabid fanbase and a large alumni base, they've won 8 NCAA Tournament games in the last 10 years, they've finished 1st or 2nd in the conference in 5 of the last 6 years and they tend to play more exciting basketball. I don't see how, barring a deep run, UR could expect to move up before VCU.

Big East is all small-mid sized private schools, a large public with nothing special academics like VCU doesn't really fit.

I wasn't suggesting that VCU should move to the Big East, necessarily (though schools like DePaul and St. John's have over 20k students and Georgetown is approaching that). At 4,100 students, though, Richmond would be the smallest school in the Big East (behind Providence with 4,500). My comments about Richmond to the BE was geared more toward the issue that they haven't had nearly the basketball success that would be required to make that move, IMO.

That's not to say UR shouldn't try to do as much as they can to be successful in basketball and see where the chips fall. Basketball provides a much quicker way to compete on a national level than football. See Butler, for instance, which suffered from pretty constant futility until they broke through (only one NCAA appearance before 1997, and now have two title game appearances). As things stand, though, I think they need to do more before a bigger conference will come calling.

The key to all this is that Richmond will lower their academic standards so they can get any player in there regardless of his academic record.
