Chicago has a tier 1 junior team. There's a tier 1 junior hockey team in Bloomington, IL and a tier 2 in Springfield, IL. There's also a tier 2 team in Janesville, WI which is basically a Rockford exurb. The Indianapolis club went under in 2004 I think.

(As a side note, the only way that it could ever be worth traveling 3 or 4 hours each way several times a week is if that kid actually makes it to the NHL.)

Hockey parents are nuts.

I knew a couple that lived in Alaska, and whose sons played on a nationally, and even internationally, traveling club youth (meaning, younger than Juniors/high school age) team from Anchorage, pretty much year round. I'll leave it at that.

Yeah, I guess for whatever reason, Indy is below the mason-dixon line for ice hockey.

Michigan is obviously way above. Thinking most of PA is solidly above as well. Minnesota and Wisconsin obviously above.

Be curious about Ohio, Iowa, and the middle to southern half of Illinois.

The blue collar towns in central Illinois like hockey. Bloomington, Springfield, Decatur, and I guess you could add Rockford even though they are in the North- but same culture.

Indiana just is not a hockey state (at least away from the northern border). Maybe because its such a basketball state. I remember playing outside on the ice when I lived there, but we played basketball, not hockey (we were lenient on the traveling rules04-cheers).

Hockey in the northern part of Ohio is pretty big (Toledo and Cleveland). Its growing in Columbus because of the Blue Jackets investment into rinks and youth hockey. But I think its still struggling in the Cincy/ Dayton area.

Dayton supported minor league hockey pretty well in the 60s and 70s, but its been spotty since then. I think they have gained and lost several teams.

The Illini Associate AD was quoted on Twitter that they would need a Pegula type gift to start M&W hockey.

RE: IllinI planning new ice ARENA? B1G Hockey?
Indianapolis, as of last year, now has a AAA Youth Travel Hockey Program (the Tri-State Spartans). They're based out of Fishers, Indiana (northeastern suburb of Indy). It's comprised of kids from parts of Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky. The Spartans were originally based out of Cincinnati but moved to Indy last year. They have 10u, 11u, 12u, 13u, 14u, 15u and 16u teams. In addition, there are multiple AA and Single A Youth Hockey programs in and around Indianapolis. Most of those teams play in the Buckeye Travel Hockey League which is for Single A and AA hockey teams from Squirt thru Midget (10u, 12u, 14u, 16u) and is made up of Indiana teams from Indy, Bloomington, Columbus, Ft. Wayne, Evansville and Kentucky teams from Owensboro, Louisville, Lexington, and Northern KY suburbs of Cincinnati, and Ohio teams from Findlay, Dayton, Cincy, Athens, Oxford and Columbus.

I only know this because my son plays for the Owensboro, KY team and has played in the Buckeye League for a few years and is now trying out for the elite AAA Spartans from Indy this year.

Where is any indication that the Ice Arena would be expanded to the seating needed for a Div I team?

They do mean a new ice arena here as the existing ice arena definitely cannot be physically moved -- it's a nearly 90-year old building. They just mean that the location of any proposed new ice arena is going to be much different than where the current ice arena is located. (In this case, they're saying it would effectively be next to Memorial Stadium.)
Yes, I got that part, my question was why people were concluding that it would be a big upgrade of the existing Arena to Div1 standards instead of just replicating the facilities of the existing Arena because they are tearing down the old building to build something else.

"Moving" the Arena rather suggests that it is basically an equivalent facility, which instead of suggesting that UI is moving up to varsity hockey, merely suggests that they are not going to screw their club hockey and other users of the current Arena when they tear it down.

With as well as the USHL draws and as well as Iowa State's ACHA team is supported, I think Iowa's a pretty underrated hockey state, and varsity Hawkeye or Cyclone hockey would do very well.

I can believe Illinois hockey needing a Pegula to get themselves started. Once you get south of Joliet, there wouldn't be much support for the sport. Really, if I had to pick a B1G school to start hockey in the near future, Illinois wouldn't be one of them.

I believe the state of Iowa is kind of split along Interstate 80. With absolutely zero interest in hockey once you get about 20 miles south of I-80.

I agree that Illinois needs a Pegula-type donation. However, I'm not exactly sure what is a better B1G candidate for hockey. The interest from south of Joliet doesn't matter since about 80% of Illinois students actually come from north of Joliet in the Chicago area. Plus, I think people are forgetting how massive the Chicago area is in terms of population. Only 10 states have more people than the Chicago area alone and it's a market with a solid youth hockey core. It's a completely underserved state when it comes to college programs (AKA there isn't a Division I program, so it's exporting everyone that's talented).

I've always thought that Chicago is a two-team city for hockey that was disguised as only suitable for one because Bill Wirtz was such an awful owner. The NHL could've fit another team in the suburbs to create kind of a Rangers-Islanders vibe and they both would've been fine (and local hockey tickets wouldn't cost an arm and a leg), but this decade the beast has been unleashed and the Blackhawks have been woken up from being a sleeping giant for decades (most people forget that they had some of the worst attendance in the NHL a decade ago).

Illinois would be a great fit for hockey. There's all the raw talent in the Chicagoland area, Indianapolis and St. Louis aren't too far away, and Champaign-Urbana isn't a blip town that would neglect a D1 hockey school as long as they were decent. Illini basketball has drawn well for years after all.

RE: IllinI planning new ice ARENA? B1G Hockey?
The Bloomington (Ill)) Thunder and the Chicago Steel of the USHL league have average attendance of under 1200, which is non-profitable. Supposedly, a USHL team needs to average 2000 to break even. The Sioux Falls Stampede averages over 6300 while Fargo and Green Bay draw more than 3000. All the Iowa teams (Des Moines, Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, and Sioux City) draw at least 2200.

For college, watch Lindenwood. They have varsity women's hockey but not mens. They also have access to a decent arena in St Charles.

Waterloo Iowa is the line. My Mom, Grandpa, Grandma were all born in Waterloo. They still say their O's like someone from Minnesota. My Uncle up there loves hockey and started a semi pro league.
*Waterloo Blackhawks were in the NBA in the late 50's and maybe NHL.
