If Denver/NMSU and Omaha/UND get added, that will effectively put hockey under a Horizon banner.

Milwaukee, Wright State and Green Bay are schools that are a little short on the funds to provide Hockey.

Why would Denver even be in the discussion? As a travel partner for NMSU, whose President said the Horizon was interested?

RE: The Next Realignment Effect on the Horizon League
In the world of one bid leagues it really makes no sense for the Horizon to have more than 10 members.

Sure taking WIU and the Indiana twins would be an errand of mercy but it accomplishes nothing for the Horizon.

Some of those D2 schools have less than 1000 students--they will not be making the jump to D1.

Did not stopped some schools with less than 1000 students that made the jump. I think Presbyterian made the jump with less than 1000. They are the smallest in D1 right now.

The Omaha article may have been a threat by Omaha and Denver that they would leave the Slummit if UND goes to the B1G for hockey. We need a healthy Slummit now.

RE: The Next Realignment Effect on the Horizon League
This could could possibly be a good thing for the WAC and even the Big Sky.
N. Colorado could replace Omaha thus giving the Big Sky 10 teams.

The WAC stays safe because there is no reason for NMSU to move with them looking for a FBS conference, in addition with GCU being eligible the WAC is becoming a pretty decent conference.

I am seeing D2 schools in the midwest and the plains could be actually be looked at to make the move.

Dear lord just stop.......... I'll put $20 down you have never been to any of these schools in Michigan and have no idea what they actually are.

Then you throw out Ashland and Ohio Dominican...... the level of stupid just keeps rising.

Inviting California Baptist to the WAC is just stupid rising as well. Realignment throws out surprises like who would have thought Incarnate word would get invited to the Southland Conference. We have to keep things in mind that we need to have a open mind to what else could surprise us. All you and some others are doing are saying stupid things with resistance of a possibility of which schools could be invited.

I'll raise you the idea that Illinois-Springfield or Concordia-St.Paul is going to "jump."

RE: The Next Realignment Effect on the Horizon League
(04-04-2017 11:09 AM)Chuck_A Wrote:  Portion of an article from the Omaha World Herald:

If (when) Wichita State kicks off mid-major Realignment, UNO will be hot commodity

"Several sources in college sports say the Horizon League and Missouri Valley Conference could have interest in UNO.

If Wichita bolts, the Valley will be left scrambling. Valparaiso, a Horizon school, might be high on the Valley’s list of replacements. The Valley could also look at UNO, bringing the city of Omaha back into the league to fill the void left by Creighton.

Several sources say the Horizon League is looking to expand by two schools, and perhaps four. The reason: improving the league’s basketball profile but also providing more conference games and, thus, more home game revenue for members.

UNO, with Baxter Arena bills to pay, would certainly fit that profile.

The Horizon also makes sense for UNO in that several of its members are “city” schools: Oakland (Detroit), Detroit Mercy, Cleveland State, Illinois-Chicago and Milwaukee. Other members are Youngstown State, Green Bay, Wright State, Northern Kentucky and Valpo.

Sources at UNO say the school is happy with the Summit. Another Summit member, Denver, is said to be coveted by the Horizon.

The attraction of the Horizon would be city schools that face similar athletic budget challenges. And it would provide fertile recruiting ground for UNO basketball.

The Horizon also has a weekly Friday night game on ESPN.

Officials at the Horizon and UNO had no comment on Monday. Stay tuned. Now that the Final Four is over, the action might just be starting."

If this is the case, it would be quite interesting to see what 2...or 4 schools the HL have in mind.

I love how he says "Several sources in college sports say the Horizon League and Missouri Valley Conference COULD have interest in UNO yet doesn't name any sources. So basically, he read it somewhere on a fan board or overheard a conversation while at dinner? I could see the MVC looking at UNO, down the list of possible candidates. No way the Horizon does. Add in the fact that UNO have money issues and I wouldn't expect any big changes, especially as drastic as heading to an all sports conference in the Great Lakes. Denver? The Horizon, just like the MVC will have an issue with the sports they offer. Denver covets a spot out west, they will wait it out.

Far more interesting will be what the MVC does now that WSU to the ACC is a go. I still think UIC or UMKC are #1 and #2. Although it would be fun to be in the room when the football schools begin fighting with the privates. That will be an interesting discussion.

Obviously they figure if they get the "best" of the other "one bid" league, then possibly that'll add another bid to the expanding league. If the rpi and SOS are good, it just might work.

The best of a one bid league is Omaha or Denver? The Horizon going after Valpo and Oakland made sense. Both were very good basketball schools. Omaha and Denver? Not so much.

It seems not so many schools to pick from then? The D2 schools seem to be much better in basketball.

Why? We have D2 schools beat D1 schools in the tournaments in Hawaii and Alaska? We have D2 schools beat FCS schools in football. Even sights list D1 and D2 schools on how powerful they are in football and basketball. Several D2 schools are in the top 200 in men's basketball.

I like how he refers to one of my alma maters (Masters Degree) as Wayne State-Michigan. As opposed to Wayne State University or just Wayne State. Nobody on the planet (outside of people who don't know a single thing about the school but just read online that they exist) refers to it as Wayne State-Michigan.

All that said: Grand Valley State and Wayne State have been speculated as D1 move-ups before. I don't think it will happen, as both appear to be happy as relatively big fish in the small pond of D2. But both schools fit the profile of D1 institutions in many ways.

GVSU loves being in D2. They enjoy being a big fish in a small pond. They would need a lot of money to upgrade their arena and Lubbers Stadium.

The funniest thing is he brings up Ferris State and Northern Michigan. I don't think DavidSt has ever been to Big Rapids or Marquette.

I'll raise you the idea that Illinois-Springfield or Concordia-St.Paul is going to "jump."

I'll see that raise and raise you Mount Union and Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Could a Grand Valley State, Wayne State-Michigan, Saginaw Valley, Northern Michigan or a Michigan Tech be interested in making the jump? Horizon could be a fit for them with schools close by. Wisconsin-Parkside is D2 as well.

I used to work for Lake Erie College--they are an academic and financial dumpster fire. Not D1 material.
