No offence to Aggie fans, but with how Bako has looked since the WACt title game, good chance theyd be a 2nd round team minimum

I'm happy for Bakersfield. No offense to you but Baylor is a much better team than any of the 3 teams that Bakersfield beat in the NIT so I doubt it.

NMSU style of play hurts them against top 50 teams. They play the foul game which they are one of the smartest I have ever seen at it. They like to shoot a lot of free throws, get their opponents key players in foul trouble and use their deep bench which lets them coast against the WAC and put Bakersfield's key big men in foul trouble(turning point in the championship). Bakersfield does not want to play the foul game, instead relying on defensive efficiency and that lends them to winning in post season play. NMSU is never going to shoot 30+ free throws in the NCAA tournament and have their opponents foul 20+ times. NMSU will beat a team in the NCAA when it does not have those two stats lead it to its conference tournament championship.

YES, i was joking.
Nice finish....in traditional Runner fashion....if you know what i mean.
A few thoughts. Imo, CSUB should go inside more. Earlier on, I did like the way the Runners mixed it up between perimeter and top of key shooting with some inside stuff. Easier against some teams than others, but against UTA, they could have gone inside more.
The fouls need to be a lot more....controlled, or rather...wise. N'doye needs some polishing as does Ahmed. Hopefully they work on that aspect for next sesson.

The next game will be a significantly taller task i think. Proud of these guys, however far they get. Great buzz in Bako over all this too!

Currently mobile....but not necessarily upwardly.

Congrats to CSUB. Hope you win it all. Being in the Final 4 in the NIT is a good feat and some well deserved press for the Runners and the WAC.

The other thing....not just CSUB, but much of the WAC /teams getting good props and free (positive) exposure on national tv. So, hopefully this benefits all.

This is a weird post on so many levels. It appears you are basing the entire NMSU season on the WAC championship game. CSUB fouls - A LOT. Look at their game last night against Arlington. Two guys fouled out with two others ending the game with 4 fouls. Basile was their only starter last night with less than 4 fouls. That's a side effect of their aggressive defense.

In the Menzies days with huge size (Chili, Sim, Hamidu, etc.), I would agree that we "played the foul game". We never relied on getting to the FT line this year. We certainly did not expect to have a FT advantage against Baylor.

We won this year because we have good coaching, play good defense, have athletic players and can play fast or slow things down a bit if needed. Do a little homework...

I dont think any of the modern day football playing WAC schools went this far in the NIT04-cheers

With Bakersfield losing so much for next year while so many others will likely get better, im assuming Barnes will hit the transfer market hard. A deep NIT run will have some bigger name transfers looking at Bakersfield no doubt

Pasnter already took an L from the WAC in recruiting this post season (Alessandro Lever to GCU). We'll see if Runners have what it takes to hand GT another L, courtesy of the WAC. :)

GIT, TCU, UCF and CSUB ...

CSUB is playing as well as anyone. Frankly I'm betting on the roadrunners. They have been on the road the whole way and are playing awesome hard, start to finish. One hell of a run for the lowest seeded team. I'm super impressed.

As a Cal State grad, I'm rooting for the Bake campus (same system), so some homerism for sure. But dang they are fun to watch, and extremely well coached)

Thx. Agree they're hot...not sure i have your faith, ...yet. Perhaps i need the sermon about faith of a mustard seed.
Fun to watch...when they don't destruct with fouls and scoreless droughts, yes.
For next year, the foul discipline and FT % will absolutely need to be addressed.

3. Utah Valley - Pope needs to develop team chemistry and develop a better defense amongst his varying levels of talent.
4. Cal State Bakersfield - Barnes needs to recruit to replenish his depth after some key senior departures.
5. UM Kansas City - Richardson needs to find a new team leader after Boyds departure and continue to upgrade his team's overall talent.
6. UT Rio Grande Valley - Hill is in the process of recruiting his type of players to fit his system. A three to four year process.
7. Seattle U. - The new coach must evaluate his team's talent and recruit needs as he will need time to molds a style.
8. Chicago State - Dildy needs to sign best players he can find with limited resources just to stay competitive.

I just don't see CSUB at 4th next season. Barnes is losing some key seniors, but there is still a lot of experience left. In the game against UTA, there two leading scores in the game were Briggs with 19 points and Durham at 18 points. Both are juniors. Wrapp and Aly are also coming back. The style of ball is not going to change. They play tough defense and control the pace of games and that is not going to change. I think Barnes recruits players that fit that system well.

GCU is losing Russell, but not much else and they are adding another three star high school recruit. I agree with a lot of your other points. Seattle is a total unknown, just got to see what they do at head coach.

I think scoring wise, Barnes has a good nucleus of players to build around. However, without "mature" deep who can execute his pressure defense, it will be hard for his team to get the jump on teams like NMSU, GCU, and UVU. All three have very good scorers as well. Barnes will needs some of his new players to execute his defensive system with little drop off. This season, Barnes has the luxury of having a veteran group of quick mature guards...Dedrick Basile, Justin Pride, and Jaylin Airington (and one very quick/athletic forward... Matt Smith). I'm not sure Wrapp and Durham can sustain that defensive intensity without bench support. If Barnes can get CSUB into the top three, that would be his best coaching effort to date.

The thing with Bakersfield too is how Barnes has been able to get transfers. Now a deep NIT run and the tourny appearance last year? Bigger name transfers will take CSUB more seriously and ones who dont need to sit out a year could play a big part next season

During one of Bakersfield's games, I remember hearing that Barnes used the JUCO system to build his program quickly. However, as his program becomes more established, Barnes wants to rely more heavily on recruiting freshmen.

After last season, Barnes brought in three JUCOs (Shon Briggs, Jame Suber, and Moataz Aly) and three freshmen (Tazé Moore, Justin Davis and Greg Lee); red-shirting two of the freshmen. Now in Bakersfield's upcoming recruiting class, Barnes has signed one JUCO (Rickey Holden) and three more freshmen (Jarkel Joiner, Justin McCall, and Darrin Person Jr.). It appears the transition from mostly JUCOs to mostly freshmen has begun. Currently, Barnes has all 13 scholarships filled for next season. So, it appears he will be relying on mostly freshmen to back fill the roles of bench depth as upperclassmen fill the roles of four graduating seniors. These incoming freshmen might be an upgrade in talent but there will be a learning curve next season.

I didnt realize they had so many freshman coming in this year. I saw on Twitter someone said Joiner was averaging the 2nd most ppg in the nation of all high school players.
