I havent been there in over 30 years. I was so disappointed then that I never went back. Maybe I will give it another try when I get down there next month.

Send me a text when you get down. We need to go out for lunch.

LOL, we keep making plans to get together when I go down but we never do. Maybe we should meet at a Sonny's

Actually we have several good BBQ places in Gulfport. Might make sense to meet halfway...like in Bradenton.

You can't get real Q outside the State of North Carolina.

The best BBQthat I've ever had was ina suburb on Nashville.

It was homemade (vs restaurant-bough), so I'm not sure if it counts.

According to the persons living in the mustard belt, no it doesn't count.
However, anyone with sense knows that mustard belongs on hot dogs, not on barbecue.

Homemade BBQ is typically better than even the best BBQ restaurants simply because BBQ is best served immediately after coming off the pit. Thus the irony of the majority of BBQ restaurants out there being buffets, as that's quite possibly the worst way to serve BBQ because the methods used to keep it warm either result it dried out BBQ or an over reliance on sauce to reintroduce moisture.

Agreed...but sometimes when you are traveling w/family or on a tight timeline...you got to eat "fast food or chain" BBQ.

That's when you find solace in the fact that even bad BBQ is still pretty good

(03-16-2017 08:39 PM)dawgitall Wrote:  The reason eastern NC is vinegar based and Piedmont NC is tomato goes back to geography. NC didn't develop in an east to west progression as was typical. We had shallow ports, shallow sounds and irregular coastline so most came here after first living in other colonies, sound region by Virginians looking for good soil and S Carolinians to Cape Fear looking for cheap / free land. Back then they believed tomatoes to be poisonous. By the time German and Scot-Irish from NJ and Pennsylvania started coming down the Great Wagon Road in mid 18th century and populating the Piedmont everyone knew tomatoes were edible and they used it as a sauce base. Coastal and Piedmont regions had little contact since roads and bridges were almost nonexistent and Piedmont rivers flowed south not east.
interesting history lesson. 04-cheers

Not in NC. BBQ is strictly understood as pulled pork by natives.

this thread was an enjoyable read.

dawgitall, you eat BBQ exactly like I always did growing up the "correct" sides, etc... Same on the flounder. You must be good people.

No shame in that. On our four day total trip to Ft Sill for my son's BCT graduation we ate BBQ six out of eight non-breakfast meals.
