May bring Mike Rhoades back home from Rice.

While he is a possibility because of his Shaka/VCU roots, IMO, it would be a hard sale to the fan base bringing in a coach that was a middle of the road finisher in Conference USA. Jamion shares those same roots and is coming off his best season as a head coach. Much easier sell.

Gary Parrish of CBS reporting that Mike Rhoades is in advanced talks with VCU to be the next head coach at VCU.

His Wikipedia page has already been changed to reflect that he has the job... not that it counts for much.

It's pretty much everywhere, now.

This is definitely turning out to be the season of the ridiculously quick search and hire for coaches.

I had the same thought. I don't know that I've ever heard of a hire being made that quickly. Kudos to them for being prepared.

I love the approach their AD takes, as well.

“I always meet with coaches after the season to determine the best ways to build their programs and put our student-athletes in the best position to reach their potential,” McLaughlin said.

“VCU Basketball is bigger than one person,” McLaughlin said. “We remain committed to ensuring that VCU Basketball remains a top-25 program nationally.”

Mike's an excellent coach and will definitely have MORE resources at his disposal, than he did at Rice.

McLaughlin's job success or failure rests solely on VCU's mens basketball program. Doesn't ultimately matter what else happens with their other sports, as long as the basketball program has continued success.

Much tougher being an AD elsewhere, like W&M, and having to focus on a lot of spinning plates. Bigger schools split sports focus up among assistant AD's.

He knows the mid-atlantic recruiting grounds as well as anyone, and certainly now knows Texas and the southeast, also. I, also, would not be surprised if his hire stops their coaching carousel for awhile, since I think he would stay, despite any bigger temptations.

Looks like from the UNCW board that word around is that UNC Assistant Coach CB McGrath will be the new head coach. They are not big fans of this hire.

Whoa. That's false news.

Not that he may not be the next HC, but that we aren't fans of this. There is a minority that don't like it. However, those same people have said they will support him.

Many of us are fans of this hire. There's an element of being a UNCW fan that is opposed to being the step-sibling of UNC and other ACC schools in our backyard. It's not fun so some of our fans naturally take offense to anything related to them.

However, sometimes having "Carolina" guys as HC isn't terrible at all. Coach Shaver has done great things for WM, and if he was properly funded I think that NCAAT monkey on your backs would be gone sooner than later.

On top of that, having an old school Carolina system guy vs the new school Carolina system would likely continue the exciting matchups between UNCW and WM. Let's hope at least!

I'm not a fan of the hire, just because i think the other two finalists are better. That said, i do think he probably has the connections to do well. I hope that he surrounds himself with a good staff.

It's also because you're a Syrachump fan. Let's be honest here.

I dunno CG the response seems pretty negative over there when you read through it.

Negative, meh. I dunno. Maybe initially from one or two. Like I said though, EVERYONE on that board is hoping for the best. It stems from everyone's thoughts that the order of choice initially was Dooley, Pasternack, McGrath. So everyone kind of looked at him as our last option. I don't think it quite worked out that way during interviews/etc, and honestly there's not many if ANY people on our boards privy to that kind of knowledge. So... if it's McGrath we're good with it as a whole because our AD hasn't let us down yet.

There seems to be a few "new" faces over on our boards in the last couple days too. So who knows. We'll see how it all shakes out. Nothing is official yet anyways.

Last night when I posted this, there were more negative posts than positives (even if it was because of reasons Seahawkshoops just stated). It may have gotten more positive since then.

A nice little award for an old friend. Congrats, Jamion.

Christian Named Ben Jobe Winner

PHOENIX, AZ -- Mount St. Mary's University men's basketball coach Jamion Christian is the recipient of the 2017 Ben Jobe Coach of the Year award, announced today by collegeinsider.com.

After starting the season 1-11, Christian led the Mount to its first Northeast Conference regular season title since the 1995-96 season. The Mountaineers defeated New Orleans in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. That win gave the Mount 20 wins for just the second time since making the move to Division I in 1988-89.

Mount St. Mary's posted a 14-4 record in the NEC. The 14 league wins are the second most in program history while the Mountaineers were 7-2 on the road in league play, which matched the 1995-96 team for the most conference road victories.

"Jamion Christian is an outstanding coach, but he is also one of the best people in the business," said CollegeInsider.com's Angela Lento. "Someday soon he will be a household name."

The Ben Jobe Award is presented annually to the top minority coach in division I men's basketball. An icon in the history of basketball at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Jobe is best known as the head coach of the Southern University, a position he held for 12 seasons.

Very well deserved! Jamion is an outstanding coach and an even better person. I'm somewhat surprised he didn't get a bigger job this offseason, but would be very surprised if this upcoming season isn't his last at Mt St Mary's; though he is an alum so that makes leaving harder. He has a super bright future.
