I'm convinced had he had a reasonable contract, he would have been let go after 14-15 season when fans started bailing out big time.
Mack might not due to city ties, but you can probably count on less than 10 fingers the number of coaches that would not come here for $4.5M, 4 year contract and total control of BB. Like we offered Cal.
Mack is fine. But $4.5M a year? For a guy who has never made it past the S16. For a guy who has a lower win % at Xavier than every one of their previous 4 coaches.
Don't get me wrong - I'll take Mack. But not for $4.5M.
You want to give this guy total control and $4.5M - and you complain about the contracts of our athletic department.
Price of doing business. Josh's extension here and now Cuonzo's new deal at Mizzou have upped the anti. I can only imagine what IU offers Marshall
For a proven winner, okay. Marshall, Miller. And, yeah, the guaranteed contracts with low buyouts are becoming the norm.
But not a flyer on Pastner, Cuonzo, or Mack. There are less than 10 coaches making that kind of money.
It's moot anyway. He's not leaving his alma mater. He would just use job offers for a raise. They would match closely enough anything to keep him.
WTH you talking about a "flyer" on Mack? been to 4 S16 in 7-8 years which is as many as any coach we've ever had except one. Geez.
As I said, Mack is fine and I would be okay if you're wanting to take a gamble on someone. But it would be a gamble. He's good at getting Xavier to the S16. He's not done anything anywhere else though, and he's not gone past it. Look at the program he took over. Gives you some perspective.
Hilarious that you continuously rip our admin for the Pastner and Tubby contracts, but you're advocating throwing $4.5M at Mack.

Show me where I stated we should offer Mack $4.5M? Though, with our tremendously high BB revenue potential, it would be a gamble that would pay off. Mack will get it done recruiting and on the floor.
The hilarious part was FRONT END ROLLOVER for Pastner making it effectively A SEVEN YEAR CONTRACT.
For Tubby it's simple; he is 66, doesn't recruit even average and paying him over $15m over 5 years ironclad guarantee for job that requires extensive recruiting and promotion. He would be 71 at end of contract.

If Tubby misses on the 2017 and 2018 recruiting classes it's gong to be a loooooooong dry spell for Memphis basketball. It's already been 7-8 years since the last S16 and now three straight with no post season at all much less the NCAA.
If Tubby flops you are looking at 5 more years of total crap.

And then our program - with its aging fan base - will resemble faded DePaul.

If, Tubby cuts his finger it will bleed. If, Tubby breaks his arm it will require a cast.

What if Tubby kicks ass beginning next year? What will all the flamethrowers on this board do?

Biotch. That's all they know.
Or, bring up all sorts of stats that say we aren't doing as well as we should.
Or lament how much better we would be if player x had been recruited and came here.

RE: Who Should Replace Tubby?
I'm watching the 5 and 6 seed NIT game right now. We should have been in that tournament this year --talent level wise. Why we rolled over and lost all semblance of a team is still a mystery .

Crying... rejoicing... that's what I'm saying. That's what it's all about!
And now, I go to watch the tourney to see other fans cry and rejoice...lol

I've watched most every game in the NCAA tourney and 90% of these teams have so much more talent than Memphis and it isn't even close.. I've seen very few if any teams that 1 player off of Memphis's team could play for!!

True..Many of us have been thinking the same thing. I saw this year's potential to be our niche--- NIT was where we coulda been contendahs.

I'd love to be wrong, and I hope I am because it means Tubby's got it together.

Everyone needs to remember you HAVE to have a good PG to get the other guys their touches in the right place. If we had the PG from WSU or even Charlie Moore our team looks so much better. Take Conley off the Grizz and play TA 40 mpg at point and Gasol and the rest would look like crap. That was our equivalent situation this past year.
For those who want to say that Martin played his best ball in the last 10 games or so, he did it OFF THE BALL in our half court sets; we had KJ, Dedric, Markel all TRYING to start the offense and it looked like s***.
