Barbeque is a noun, a food to be precise. It isn't the act of cooking something on a grill.

In this area BBQ as a stand alone term is pork. We do cook other things in BBQ style but they are generally referred to as "BBQ chicken," etc.
I had BBQ brisket at a kind of fast foot place in Houston. It was awesome! It had a brown sauce that sort of looked like A1.

I used to live in Houston.
I get that there is good food cooked w/ indirect heat, but my sentiments are strongly aligned w/ post #45.

Are hushpuppies common fare in other parts of the country? We must have hushpuppies with Calabash style seafood and barbecue plates. Agreed?

So if I go to a seafood restaurant in Syracuse, South Bend, Birmingham or Seattle do I get hushpuppies?

Warner Stamey was the first to serve hushpuppies with Q in (you guessed it) Greensboro.
Hushpuppies are now the norm for Lexington style barbecue, while the traditional bread for Eastern Style is cornsticks.

The last hushpuppy that I ate was in about 1994.
But to answer your question, I think that they're generally southern with the exception of national fast food seafood chains.
Regardless, if you're ordering hush puppies in Syracuse, Seattle, or South Bend, you're doing something wrong.

You do in Louisville. If you want excellent seafood in Louisville I would recommend Mike Linnig's. You can get a couple of meals out of the seafood plate.

LOL...I was in the real part of Texas (San Antonio and nearby Hill Country)
BTW, no hush puppies in Upstate NY. You will get a fresh loaf of warm Italian Bread or rolls versus hush puppies.
Catfish is rare to find up in NY too (thankfully...no thanks to eating farm raised catfish feasting on poop). Haddock fish fry is very common. For local fish...you can sometimes find perch, walleye and bullhead at restaurants.

I used to ignore hush puppies until someone suggested I dip them in ranch dressing - awesome! Tartar sauce works pretty well, too, though I prefer buttermilk ranch.

Thanks to chain restaurants, hush puppies are becoming more common. Some restaurants will offer a dinner roll as an alternative.

Perspective: dipping hush puppies in ranch is slightly healthier than wrapping a stick of butter in bacon and deep frying it.

I've almost always been served hushpuppies with Eastern NC BBQ. Corn sticks in a few places but more often hushpuppies.

If your are basing your food consumption on healthy choices you are in the wrong thread! Honey butter is good on hushpuppies.

flounder is most often found fish at restaurants here. At home Freshly caught flounder, deep fried in the yard with baked potato, slaw and hushpuppies is a just about perfect meal. Flounder gigging being the source of choice.

Deep-fried hushpuppies wrapped in bacon... NOW you're talking!
