Eh, I wouldn't want to have the tournament take place in a state that does NOT have a CAA team in it.

At least when you keep it close to a few schools in the league, the chances are good several fanbases will show up, depending on who is having an "up" year and is also near the top in attendance. If you throw it that far from the geographic center of the conference, you're one "down year" by the top attendance teams away from having horrid attendance.

Sure, UNCW at #1 will get more fans than NU at #1, but we can fill an arena if it's a big game and we are good. If let's say UNCW is a #8 and W&M is #7. I don't think Virginia Beach will help much.

Precisely.

Put the tourney at the Boston Garden with the team we'll have next year and a top 4 finish at the end of the year, we'll have excellent attendance.

Big cities in the Northeast are about events and winning when it comes to college games.

Alums and students would come out big time for the games at the Garden.

Look at our attendance in Pittsburgh for the tourney game vs Notre Dame. We filled our entire section and then some clad in red shirts. We dwarfed ND crowd.

Why?

Because it was a big event and we had waited 24 years to get there.

We sold out Matthews for Michigan State.

Seeing Elon or W&M in January or February, even if we're in first place isn't going to pack our arena. That's just the way it is for now.

Even though Boston is cold in March, I think there are enough fans who would see it as a fun destination city thats not that hard to get to by plane. Playing in the Garden would be awesome for the players and fans. The problem though, Im guessing, is I dont think the Garden would bid on the CAA because of generally low attendance year to year.

Youd have a decent chance of a Northern CAA tourney maybe in Providence, where they are more desperate to book things...but that will lower your attendance again, because southern schools wont care about going to Providence, even though I think its a fine city.

Wasn't like 37 degrees in Charleston on Pillow Fight Friday? There were cold days in Richmond too. Snowstorms don't happen that often in March.

Anyway it's all a pipe dream, having the tournament at the Garden.

Getting both the Celts and the Bruins to schedule the next year away during that time would be a chore and NU selling it to Mayor Walsh would be as well.

It will stay in the South. Meaning Northern teams will always remain at a disadvantage that's not easy to overcome.

Not that it can't be done, as NU proved to years ago.

Virginia is the most populous state without a major league sports franchise. The Hurricanes need to move somewhere that might care.

A basketball tournament would be a nice event for the city. The CAA Tournament could be in Charlestown 2-3 years in a row and then Virginia Beach the same number.

Plus TD Garden seats 17,565. You'd have to schedule around the Bruins and the Celtics, along with college hockey. At best case you'd have maybe 6-7K for a championship, and that's with Northeastern playing. Get almost anybody else, and there'd be 2,500 in the building or less.

When I went to Baltimore last year, the tournament barely even got mentioned locally except for :30 of Towson highlights, while I saw 3 college lacrosse game highlights on local news. Orioles ballboy tryouts got more publicity. I'd imagine it'd be the same or worse in Boston.

Virginia Beach would be a great fit for the tourney when that arena is built. Greensboro or Winston-Salem (Wake Forest's arena) could fit as well, but you have all that HB2 business. Where else would you go?

It did a fine job in North Charleston this year. One thing I'd possibly change if I was Joe D'Antonio is perhaps to play the Friday games at TD Arena. You could do that or maybe have the women's tournament there at the same time playing at TD or McAlister Field House (The Citadel arena).

The SoCon plays both tournaments in Asheville at the same time, and that has helped to make it a destination event there. Schools like Chattanooga bring as many fans to their women's games as the men's.

A mid sized basketball arena is being built in DC to be home of the WNBA team, that could also be a potential future CAA tournament site.

That smaller sized DC arena will be perfect for the A10 Men and/or Women, ACC Women, and CAA Men and/or Women. It can rotate these events. The WNBA season does not start until May, so no major tenant will be bumped.

If the arena has an ice rink, it could host a minor league hockey team, too.

The Hurricanes draw well when they are winning, other than that, you are correct

I don't understand the "a fun destination city" argument. I go to watch basketball. If I want to go see a show on Broadway, I'll do it on my own time.

I'm with you, but for many of the wives, it's a much easier sell! My wife could give two craps about hoops, but i had i not been coaching, she'd have gone to Charleston just because.

The Wizards practice facility in DC that you're talking about will only end up having around 4,500-5,000 seats.

That's not nearly enough for any of the men's tournaments, and maybe not even the women's tournaments.

RE: Future of the CAA Tournament
The city can make a huge difference. Only two teams make it to the finals and only four make it to Sunday. That leaves six teams with fans who may only play on Friday and/or Saturday and the tournament is over. And most fans are there for their teams, not the CAA tournament as a whole. A good city turns it into a mini vacation, win or lose.

So if your team loses early....you just drive home?

When we'd lose early in Richmond, we took the train to D.C. for a day. No sense in driving 5 hours to watch a 2-hour basketball game and then immediately drive 5 hours back. And obviously you wouldn't do this if you have a night or 2 booked at a hotel, which most people do when they're planning their tournament trip.

Baltimore was a step up in that regard, and North Charleston is even better.

That was like a once in a lifetime type thing. Not sure I wanna try that again.

SCTVman posted this in the general thread:

You can tweet to @CharlestonCAA and give them suggestions about what should be done for next year's tourney.

I gave them my feedback on their wonderful security personnel.

"a pork chop" signifies you're only gonna need one. I'm thinking we better buy a few.
