For the Big Sky, we have tried many different approaches on campus sites - limiting the number of participants, having it at the regular season champ (too difficult to make last minute plans, especially if you don't know if your team is going to make the tourney), having it preset at LAST Year's Regular Season champ, etc.

Neutral site is the best overall bet. Spokane would be the best location, as drivable for EWU, PSU, Idaho, Montana - with doable driving for Weber/ISU/MSU.

For the Pac 12, Vegas is perfect - drivable from the biggest traveling fan bases (Arizona then UCLA, plus easily drivable from ASU, USC and Utah).

I know just a few years ago, the Big Sky had an issue of Sac St hosting due to being the conference champs and hosting in that tiny gym (The Nest). I think that is what got them to go to a neutral site. Reno is as accessible to PSU, Sac St, UC Davis, Weber St on the road...however can be harsh over the passes even during early March. But it is accessible via plane also for most places.

Sac St didn't host because they didn't finish in first. The problem with The Nest was that it wasn't acceptable for ESPN's equipment. Sac St lined up their wellness center for temporary stands if they won the right to host. Portland St would have had that problem too, but next year they are getting a new on campus arena.

Weber St and Montana had dominated hosting, so much of the issue was to take it away from them. Many coaches wanted all 12 teams to qualify too, and if the same school had hosted the women's tournament, that would have caused serious logistical issues.

There are places that are expensive to travel to with late ticketing, so that was an issue too. When UND hosted the women's tournament a few years ago, Idaho St bussed all the way there as all the flights were booked. Why they didn't bus from Fargo or Minneapolis is a question, but the bussing gave them an axe to grind. This year, UND's women had an extended road trip of 11 days (road trip to Portland and Sacramento, and then on to Reno while they waited to play) which didn't help their winning cause any and promptly got upset. They came back on the same flights as the men, as their tickets were bought way ahead.

Vegas is a destination city in the west. People will go there to watch basketball with many other things to do as well. I remember the Pac-12 held their tourney in LA for a year or two and it was very poorly attended.

Looking at pics of the Hornets Nest is stunning. Is that the worst arena in D1?

Sac St, Portland St, and Cal St-Northridge got offers from the Big Sky after Idaho, Boise St, and Nevada left as most of the Sky schools had visions of sugar plums and fat TV contracts if they included those mega-markets. Nothing ever materialized of course, and Sac St and Portland St have a glacial speed at improving facilities. Portland St will open a new arena next year, but Sac St has been promising a new one ever since they've been a member.

The Montanas were the only schools that objected to the west coast ones, as they wanted the Dakota schools. Can't imagine the Montanas being very happy now, as they have been yoked with Jr Highs masquerading as DIs.

Man, you weren't kidding. My junior high had as many seats in its gym. They can't compete with anyone for recruits although if they ever got good enough they could play some games at the Kings' facility.

I didn't realize that any NCAA Division I team had an arena that small. Now I can understand why the Horizon League is in the top 12 in attendance each year.

I am hoping that the Horizon League will try Vegas after the Detroit contract is up.....why not?

Isn't Detroit the Vegas of the Midwest?
