It wasn't a special rule "for the WAC", it was a rule change to benefit the WAC.

The new rule only requires continuity of satisfying the requirements as a conference, it no longer requires that it be with the same schools. That is what saved the WAC.

So did we ever figure out how the American and/or Big East got their auto bid to the NCAA basketball tourney? If CUSA split like the old Big East did, how do we do the same thing?

DePaul, Marquette, Villanova, St. Johns, Providence, Seton Hall, and Georgetown all met the continuity requirements (8 years of membership together). Thus, we were able to keep our auto-bid (not to mention, in an agreement with the football members, the Big East name, the history, and Madison Square Garden as a tournament host).

With what is going on, I do think the P5 are thinking real hard on not splitting from the G5 and FCS schools. I think they could tweak the rules a bit to allow new FBS, FCS and D1 conferences. Plus, allow D2 schools to come up as a way to help out the money issues. Azusa Pacific Vs UCLA or Humboldt State Vs Stanford in the future.

American kept the autobid. Big East got a waiver. How do you do the same thing? You probably can't.

Basically because we're royalty and get treated with respect. And our tournament champ isn't taking an at-large bid away from the power conferences. The "Great West", or CUSA East or West, not so much.

That hasn't mattered since the rules were changed to keep the WAC alive. Continuity is now defined as the conference playing a sport for 6 or 7 years or whatever.

Morally and politically, it probably counted for a lot that the Big East had written the Pre-Nup based on the assumptions of the old continuity rules, since the old continuity rules pretty much forced the retention of the hybrid in 2005. But rules-wise, nahh.

Short answer: The rules are a charade and a sham, the NCAA will do whatever it wants to at the given time. Of course, sometimes what they want to do is not get sued.

At the same time, the Big East champ was going to get in anyway. The 8 year rule is to stop just anybody from doing it. Its 2 years for other sports (where you don't have the NCAA tourney money incentive).

RE: IF I'm reading the NCAA bylaws right, new conference takes 8 yrs to earn autobid
3.3.3 Election Procedures.
3.3.3.1 Application. An athletics conference desiring to become a member conference shall make application
on a form available from the national office by June 1 for membership effective August 1 of the following
academic year. A check in the appropriate amount for annual dues (see Constitution 3.7.2) shall accompany
the application. Should the applicant fail election, the dues paid shall be refunded. (Revised: 4/25/02, 1/15/11
effective 8/1/11)
3.3.3.2 Election. Athletics conferences may be elected as member conferences by a majority vote of the delegates
present and voting at an annual Convention or by a majority vote of the Board of Directors, effective the
following August 1. (Revised: 4/25/02, 11/1/07 effective 8/1/08, 10/28/10, 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11)

It really only sounds like a bunch of procedural nonsense that is really just a formality.

RE: IF I'm reading the NCAA bylaws right, new conference takes 8 yrs to earn autobid
Quote:20.02.5 Multisport Conference. A Division I multisport conference shall satisfy the requirements of this
section. (Adopted: 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11)
20.02.5.1 Minimum Number of Members. A multisport conference shall be composed of at least seven
active Division I members. The member conference shall include at least seven active Division I members that
sponsor both men’s and women’s basketball. (Adopted: 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11)

does this mean every division I multisport conference must sponser basketball? or is this only the section about gaining an autobid for the tourney?

Maybe that rule could go away? Lets say schools want to restart old conferences that may still have NCAA credits that have not gone to another conference.

Big West FBS credits
Southern FBS credits
WAC FBS credits
Great West credits
SWC credits
RMAC credits
Lone Star credits
MVC credits
Metro Credits
And so forth.

Yes. No BBall, no Division 1. After all, the NCAA tourney media money is what pays the bills.
