RE: Gary Waters
He had two poor seasons in a row which opens the door for termination in the coaching world today unfortunately. And a new AD on top of it.... and new admins like to pick their own guys.

RE: Gary Waters
Those transfers were brutal to be sure, but as was the case when he was at Kent, Waters' recruiting really deteriorated the longer he was coach.

RE: Gary Waters
Didn't he recruit the entire 2002 team except Gates? Teams were decent after that, weren't they?

Groce fired at Illinois. Wonder if he'll be considered for the Cleveland State or Miami positions, or if he's even interested.

I see former Flash Marvin Jones is a key player for Texas Southern, which is headed to the NCAAs. Sure didn't do much for Kent.

I remember it like it was yesterday. 17 years ago. Goodness gracious. Beat Rutgers at home, yes?

Ironically, new CSU AD is the guy who hired Groce at Illinois. So maybe it could happen?

Groce is a great recruiter and he had what many regard as the Big Ten's best recruiting class coming in. His reputation is that he doesn't get the most out of his talent.

I agree, Muskrat. Groce's problem was that his teams underachieved.

RE: Gary Waters
Cleveland State just hired Dennis Felton as their new head coach. He has been an assistant at Tulsa the last three years. Previously had been head coach at western Kentucky and Georgia. Seems like his career mirrored Waters. Three NCAA appearances at Western Kentucky(read Kent St). From there promoted to Georgia (read Rutgers and big money)where he had one NCAA appearance and was removed after a few years. Now onto Cleveland St.

I'm not sure I understand this unimaginative hire of a coach on the way down. I hope it works out because, living in Cleveland, I'd like to start taking in a few CSU home games again.

Terry Pluto finally reported what we all suspected. It wasn't Gary Waters idea to retire. He was the good soldier though and attended the press conference of the new coach yesterday.

As far as college coaches go, Waters is a class act. I didn't like, though, how when he left Kent State he was bragging about how much money he'd be making. At the time I found that rather disturbing for a man who held himself out as a Christian.

This is by no means confirmed but when he left Kent I heard from an alumni contributor that Kent wasn't overly sad. He apparently had become a high maintenance employee. That kind of fits into your comment.
