Grand Canyon-smack talk put aside
Whew! It's been fun tormenting you guys but now let's talk basketball. Which tourney do you guys think you will be in, CBI or CIT? Also, who is going to step in for Russell who I do think is really really good (seriously) for next year? Is Shaq Carr the guy? Is Josh Braun going to transfer since he can or is he staying at GCU for his grad degree? What recruits do you have coming in? I think GCU and NMSU will be the teams to beat the next couple of years in the WAC. I'm sure you have seen Franks list of blue chip players but we will see how they pan out. Let's see of Ohio State transfer A.J. Harris and be as good as Baker at the point. Exciting times for both programs.04-rock

RE: Grand Canyon-smack talk put aside
It's looking like GCU will not play in any tourney. If they do, CIT and they will not be hosting a 1st round game (students will be on Spring Break).
I assume Shaq Carr will start at Point unless the freshmen Damari Milstead blows Dan's mind in the off season. He was a teammate of Frayers.
Josh Braun cannot transfer, he's already started his Graduate degree at GCU.
The only LOI is Damari. Right now there are only two scholarships unless someone does not return. The 2nd scholly may be filled by Malik Ondigo (fingers crossed) or a JUCO/Grad transfer. Remains to be seen.

Have I seen Frank's list??? Depends on which list. They change often.

I think the only guy we have coming in Oscar's teammate from NorCal, but the guy I'm most interested in is the 6'7" point guard we brought in from Senegal who redshirted this year. Shaq likely takes over DeWayne's role next year because that is why he was brought in last year (the chemistry with Keonta is a bonus). We'll likely be back in the CIT again and hopefully we actually win it this year, but our road record is my biggest concern. Braun will no doubt stay for his senior year, but could possibly transfer after that if he feels like it.

RE: Grand Canyon-smack talk put aside
Yeah, I'm kind of over the CIT. Isn't anything other than NCAA tourney a participation trophy anyway? Plus, GCU is due for an overseas trip this summer. If the team is feeling anything like a few fans I know, including myself, it might just be time to close the door on transition and get on with the business of 2017-18.

There is no indication that anyone other than graduating seniors (Russell & Clark) are leaving, though I might be able to think of one or two who I wouldn't shed a tear for if they left. Milstead is in. I have to think the staff is combing JUCOs & grad transfer wire for some more size. We will also be getting back Matt Jackson. I'm not going to put much hope in Toure or Sankare, until I've seen them produce on the floor in meaningful games. The "project" players have not done much for GCU to date.

The window for JB to leave was last year, as he is in his MBA program now. I was honestly a little nervous that MM would come calling on his way to UNLV last summer. I believe I remember seeing or hearing that the Braun family maintained some kind of relationship w/MM, even after he committed to and began attending GCU. It was probably more paranoia on my part than having any actual roots in reality.

Majerle also offered a scholarship to a class of 2020 guard who is currently at the same high school as Oscar and if Majerle offers another scholarship within the next couple of years, I'm going to have to think he has a fetish with guys coming out of that school.

I saw Milstead and Walker (the 2020 offer) play side by side at HoopHall West & my first thought was that we had signed the wrong kid. Walker stands out on the floor and is only a freshman. It is probably why he already has an offer from Arizona, too! Haha

But you can't deny that it makes seem like Majerle is obsessed with guys coming out of that school.

The question mark we have is how good is Bollo Gnahore. He red-shirted last season and missed this season with an injury.

The two regular season games between New Mexico State and Grand Canyon will be fun. Hopefully we'll meet in the WAC Tournament Championship.

I just hope the rest of the WAC steps up next year to improve their RPI. We need to do better in our non-conference schedule.

RE: Grand Canyon-smack talk put aside
GCU's likely starting five and second rotation:

G- Shaq Carr 6' 2": started all three games DeWayne didn't play in
G- Josh Braun 6' 4": one of the two I think is for sure
F- Oscar Frayer 6' 6": kid has earned it with play down the stretch this year
F- Keonta Vernon 6' 6": only other for sure starter
C- Boubacar Toure 6' 11" or F- Kerwin Simth 6' 9" or a possible unknown transfer: we'll see how Boo comes back from the ACL tear cause it will likely be his if he comes back really well
G- Damari Milstead 6' 1" or Ibrahima Sankare 6' 7": Marjele could possibly ask Damari to redshirt his first year just to try and clear up the log jam we have at garud or Sankare moves to forward, but would have needed to put on weight this past year in which he redshirted
G- Kenzo Nudo 6' 4": Let's see if Kenzo can finally fill that Ryan Majerle role like he was supposed to since he probably rushed back from a torn Achilles injury by recovering in 4 months instead of the 10-12 months it normally is
G- Gerard Martin: It honestly hurts to do this, but unless the offense comes back, I only see him coming off the bench, while still playing a big chunk of minutes
F- Matt Jackson 6' 8": Let's hope that the back is no longer an issue for Matt because it would be great to finally have him back cause we definitely missed him as a stretch 4
C- Boubacar Toure 6' 11" or F- Kerwin Simth 6' 9": This spot likely goes to whoever starts or they could share the role if coach brings in another transfer who can play the five

I have a hard time finding a spot for Fifii in the regular rotation, which sucks because he was a good spark plug guy. If coach chooses to go with a guard heavy second unit, I could see Fifii running point and everyone else moves up a spot and Boo and Kerwin split time with the main unit. GCU is currently projected to have 11 guards on the roster, so it is hard to find playing time for all the scholarship guys, let alone the walk-ons.

RE: Grand Canyon-smack talk put aside
I like the breakdown, TD49. I'd probably tweak a few things:

PG is all about who works the hardest this off season. Shaq might begin next year with the ball in his hands, but he gets the quick hook for Fiifi if he keeps turning the ball over. As was the case at times this season, maybe we see a different Shaq he isn't splitting time or sharing the floor with DeWayne.

I think Oscar is safe to keep his starting role, as another off season is only going to allow his game to develop further. He has the highest ceiling on GCU's roster and O can take this as high/far as he is willing to work. Frayer *should* be a lock to start w/JB & Keonta.

Assuming health, I would actually leapfrog Matt Jackson to the front of the line for the starting #5 man. We just haven't seen consistent effort from Kerwin or consistent health from Boo. If we had to publish depth charts today, I think mine look like this...

1 - Shaq/Fiifi/Sankare
2 - JB/Milstead (if no RS)
3 - Oscar/Martin/Kenzo
4 - Keonta/Kerwin
5 - Jackson/Boo

If bigs aren't getting the job done, we know Coach isn't shy about pulling either the 4 or 5 off the floor and get another guard out there. Maybe being able to do so without losing size/length is what makes the Sankare experiment worth it. I'm just not going to believe it until I see it from him. Our track record with project players isn't the best, so far.

I'm curious to see where we go with the last roster spot. I'd like to see someone over 6'6 come in, but so would most of the rest of NCAA teams. I honestly wouldn't be shocked to see them bring in a grad xfer PG, much like they did Royce 3 years ago & Grant White last season. Part of me is also still hopeful that WO Chieck Sy-Savane stays around and presses these guys to play a bigger in the offense. We'll see, though.

I would tend to agree with you here Frank I don't see this kid playing guard, especially pg.

I mean the hardest thing is finding film on Sankare like is the issue with most international players because I would like to see what his game is like before I determine where he play. I just know that when we recruited him out of Senegal, he played point.

Chieck was apparently a baller when he was playing up at a juco in New York before Majerle and co. scooped him up. I was told by one of the media guys with the program that he almost 28 at the juco level

No, he redshirted this past year. He was a part of last years recruiting class.
