I just realized that having ND and ND in the same conference could be potentially confusing.

The same source was the first to report that Fleck will accept the Gophers job.

UND has been the leader in hockey attendance for some years, as Wisconsin no longer draws as well. UMINN and Wisconsin badly need the former rival who brings fans, as their games now are such low crowd energy. In the past week, a UND-Minnesota game in Las Vegas sold out in minutes, and UND brought impressive numbers to MSG in a face off with BC, and held up to 70% of the tickets in the last Frozen Four in Tampa. Our fans travel for hockey more than any school.

If this is offered, don't see any way that UND would turn it down, even if we get a lousy TV deal from the Big Ten Network. Thought our future in hockey was tied to Omaha and Denver and maybe Ariz St. Guess the Gophers and Badgers miss our fans. Have been conference mates with all the Big Ten hockey schools except Penn St (Ohio St is in our women's league).

Maybe even a conference tournament will return to the X in St Paul with fans.

Did you go to MSG for that game? I went to the Rangers-Hurricanes game earlier in the day and was pleased to see all the Fighting Sioux jerseys.

Had been planning to, but things happened to prevent that.

Johns Hopkins is in the Big Ten for lacrosse. I can understand this.

The Big Ten Network needs programming. Many of these moves are to ensure a more attractive lineup.

We go by UND. Both schools were in the WCHA when Notre Dame first started hockey, so it's not like it's the first time. Both of our facilities are much different now though.

The move to the Summit makes much more sense to me now. Before, thought the future of our hockey program was intertwined with PAC12 schools starting the sport, so we needed a western focus for everything. If this report is true, we need a Midwestern focus for all sports.

Our new President had been saying that UND will be the premiere school in the upper plains, and that will be reflected in athletics too. Took that to mean FBS. A move to the Summit does not do that.

Apparently, Minnesota and Wisconsin were promised another western team of their choosing. UND will get their fans riled up way more than Michigan or Ohio St do in hockey. By some accounts, Minnesota's most intense rivalry is with us in hockey, not Iowa or Wisconsin in other sports. The last time they beat us in the Frozen Four, rioting broke out on their campus.

The most hockey championships:

Michigan 9
North Dakota 8
Denver 7
Wisconsin 6
Minnesota, BC, BU 5

The Big Ten will be far in the lead if true.

The more telling portion of this is how there aren't any Big Ten programs looking to upgrade ice hockey to D1 scale.

There can never be too much money when it comes to funding football, I guess.

You wonder if UN-O wouldn't enrage the folks over in Lincoln, if it comes to their consideration.

for partial membership in the hockey conference, yes. It'd be ideal for the B1G since they would not have to "give away" any potential full-member slots, be a huge upgrade for the conference, and get into the Boston media market a little. And BU is AAU so there's always that potential for CIC if an agreement is made. UConn is doesn't really work because the B1G doesn't want UConn as a full member, and UConn would not want partial membership either and would likely have to come to an agreement with the AAC as well.

Unfortunately, hockey is an expensive sport and given that most college athletics don't make you money and that you need to match on Title IX, its difficult to do. I'm sure Rutgers would love to get into it, there is a lot of interest in hockey in NJ (given that 4 professional teams get significant followings in NJ) and there are plenty of high school players, but budget is the big limitation.

Actually Lincoln might be thrilled if UN-O got in.

I know for a fact that Lincoln tried to get Omaha into the CIC when Nebraska entered the Big 10. Their reasoning was that Illinois-Chicago was allowed to attend CIC meetings, so why shouldn't Nebraska-Omaha? (Much of the benefit of CIC is meetings to discuss best practices, so if you're allowed to attend the meetings you're effectively "in" the CIC for most practical purposes). But rather than allow Omaha in, the CIC kicked out UIC. Pissed off the folks in Illinois something fierce.

Yes, that's the practical issue. The Illinois athletic department (which is a school that would be ripe for building a D-1 hockey program with a strong existing club team and a large talent pool in its backyard) has literally said that it would take a Penn State-sized donation (AKA around $100 million) for a hockey program to get started. I'm all for more college hockey programs, but the huge upfront capital costs are why there's always so much talk about schools adding hockey but very little action. I can't emphasize this enough: it took the single largest donation in the history of Penn State for ANYTHING (including academics, football, etc.) to start up the hockey program there. That's a MASSIVE bar to climb. There are very few schools that even have access to even one donor that could conceivably put that type of money down on the table, much less having that donor want to commit that type of money to hockey specifically.

Both would be great things, if it turns out to happen.

There is no such hard requirement for joining the Big Ten.

Then add Minn-Duluth, too. Another decent market (Duluth) that loves hockey, and has a lot of WCHA tradition with Minnesota and Wisconsin.

UConn would be a fine addition to the hockey conference, and the full conference one day in the future.

Hockey is a separate universe.

Notre Dame is joining the Big Ten ... in hockey. That should tell you something, about hockey.

While no doubt that Minn-UND hockey was and will be intense, back in reality the U of Minn's peer in pretty much all things is the U of Wisc. They do more research, and are a higher regarded university overall. They're the U's chief rival, in all sports. (except baseball, as they dropped it).

On the other hand, Iowa is the university that Minn looks down upon. Pig farmers. Lower research. Etc. But usually entertaining games, and their fans come in droves and are annoying.

Seems like there would be lots of potential. Rutgers I could see. Illinois. Not sure about the Indiana schools or Iowa, though. Nebraska no because Omaha has it. NW I think it'd be too much of a drain for a private school, maybe not though. Maryland too southern, probably no interest.

And at North Dakota, a similarly massive (> $100M) gift was given to the university (.... in a sense, it's a bit complicated) that resulted in the nicest hockey arena in the nation for college hockey.

That just doesn't happen at many places.
