What is the South's equivalent to the Big East?
I know that the West Coast Conference is the western equivalent to the BE, but I was curious at to what the southern equivalent would be. The SoCon maybe?

There is no equivalent to the Big East in other parts of the country. No other basketball first conference gets anywhere near as many in numbers or percentages of their members into the NCAA Tournament. The WCC, MVC and SoCon are more equivalent to the A-10 than BE.

I suppose at one time or another either the Sun Belt (1980's) or CAA (1990's) could have been considered a Southern-based basketball-first conference. Definitely the extinct Metro Conference was.

A lot of those great teams are spread out having joined the A-10 or C-USA.

BB in the South is just something to do to past the time when football season ends.

The old Metro Conference was similar, with a focus on competitive basketball schools located in major cities. As the conference evolved, though, many of the new additions were not city based.

Refresh my memory: Was basketball ever big in the old Southwest Conference? I remember Houston and Arkansas having strong teams, but was it a big deal with the other schools?

Really? I know that this is a football-biased board, but did everyone forget that the ACC exists?

If you mean what conference is as competitive, it's the ACC. If you mean which conference is composed of mostly, if not all privates with little to no influence from football, I'd say it was the Big South or even the Atlantic Sun.

Or in other words, there really isn't a comparison.

Outside of Duke and North Carolina. How many southern schools in the ACC really care? The SEC has been hiring quality coaches to try and get the conference to be more than just Kentucky and whoever steps up.

As a Zags fan, the WCC is definitely more lile the A-10. It's not even quite up to par to the A-10. More like MVC. Gonzaga and St. Mary's, and somewhat typically BYU, are commonly found in the tournament which elevatrs the profile of the WCC. San Francisco has 2 titles with Bill Russell and Santa Clara made an effort with Steve Nash. Other than that, it's not competitive. As a fan, I'd love to see Gonzaga as a non-football member of the Mountain West or western wing oh the Big East, but they fit the WCC profile perfectly.

UVA and NC State for sure. Wake Forest perhaps to a lesser extent.

And baseball hasn't started.

I live in Central Arkansas. Yesterday it was 80 degrees outside and its early February. No one wants to go inside to watch a game. Baseball practice has already started for most kids teams.

I wouldn't say the ACC is equivalent to the Big East. If anything, the ACC is more like the Big Ten - only with more smaller, private schools.

They had good years, but it was never a consistent powerhouse.

Up until Houston joined the conference, it was pretty weak. In the 80s, Texas, Houston and Arkansas were consistently strong. Baylor, A&M, SMU and Tech would sometimes be good. Rice and TCU were pretty consistently lousy.

Really? Louisville, UVA, Georgia Tech, NC State, Wake Forest... they all seem to care about basketball and I'd consider them to be Southern.

Oh, I'd agree. I just disagree with the "SOUTH = FOOTBAWL" bias that we sometimes see here. If you look at the 6 bluest of the blue bloods in basketball (Duke, UNC, Kentucky, Kansas, Indiana and UCLA), 3 of them are located in the South. Plus, the ACC was built on basketball fandom.

RE: What is the South's equivalent to the Big East?
South is a relative term. Massachusetts is South of Maine and California is South of Washington, but we wouldn't classify either of those as Southern states.

If you go by the SEC: Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, Florida

If you go by the US Census Bureau: Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia Maryland, Delaware

If you go by the Confederacy: Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, (Missouri), (Kentucky), (West Virginia), (Maryland), (Delaware) - parentheses indicate border states that did not leave the Union but did have large pockets of support for the Confederacy

If you go by my wife and her family who are from Georgia and Alabama for generations: Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida panhandle, probably South Carolina, North Carolina (but a stretch)

RE: What is the South's equivalent to the Big East?
Big East pre-BEFC and the ACC of the 80s would be similar, but the Metro would have been the closest match (no football sponsorship). Big East of the 90s and C-USA 1.0 are probably similar as well. Now with the Big East out of the football business, there really isn't a match in the south. Ironically, the American is the legal successor of the Big East but is probably a match for C-USA 2.0 with a couple of northern schools in the mix.

I always considered UAB as the southern equivalent to A10/MVC/WCC until CUSA was ransacked.
