RE: What is the South's equivalent to the Big East?
South is a relative term. Massachusetts is South of Maine and California is South of Washington, but we wouldn't classify either of those as Southern states.
If you go by the SEC: Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, Florida
If you go by the US Census Bureau: Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia Maryland, Delaware
If you go by the Confederacy: Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, (Missouri), (Kentucky), (West Virginia), (Maryland), (Delaware) - parentheses indicate border states that did not leave the Union but did have large pockets of support for the Confederacy
If you go by my wife and her family who are from Georgia and Alabama for generations: Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida panhandle, probably South Carolina, North Carolina (but a stretch)
