Season-opening Stanford Football Game Moved to Sydney, Australia???
...for late August?
This is being reported on the Stanford premium message boards and was apparently announced at an end-of-year football dinner with players. Purportedly this was agreed upon by both schools while JK was in Palo Alto for the season-finale game...and they're now awaiting NCAA approval.
1. If true, I'm assuming we'd get an even bigger pay day out of this since we'd be giving up a home game.
2. I'm scratching my head on the benefit for either program...and who's going to ante up the travel budget?

We're looking for another TV market to dominate. This is a way of getting our foot in the door down under. Also an untapped recruiting territory.

If this is true, I believe you will see a number of ancillary benefits from such a move. Sustained national (and international) press coverage, a good TV and international audience payday. An opportunity to recruit internationally, in particular for place kickers and punters and a great platform for Rice to be noticed as an innovator in sports programming, similar to the benefits of the Cuba trip.

Agreed. Need to get in on the Aussie punter boom...all three Ray Guy finalists this year are Aussies and I believe an Aussie has won every year since 2013 or 2014?
Plus there was a defensive end from Ga. Tech who got drafted in early rounds by Broncos this past season, Adam Gotsis.

I hope the payout is huge because we lose probably the biggest gate of the year. Houston area Stanford grads can't be happy.
On the positive side, Houston outdoor football in August is not appealing.

The pay day will also need of offset a 10-fold increase in travel budget required.

I was posting TIC, but evidently others saw validity in the post.

Wouldn't be surprised if the Australian sponsors are paying for travel costs... That's what they do for Ireland games. Also, I wonder if we will start our season a week earlier, on the 26th.
Not a fan of this move though. Why give up your sexiest home game?

They paid Cal and Hawaii a fortune I believe. This is like moving a game to Reliant.
EDIT: 7 figures...

I agree with you. I'm hearing from the Stanford side that the game would likely be the week of August 21st (but likely NOT Saturday the 26th), so that our guys could get back in time for the first week of classes. Not sure how the true Freshmen missing O Week is going to go over with the Administration.

Yeah, but it becomes a blow out in a nationally televised game; likely the first FBS game of the season.

Hahaha you're kidding right? You don't think they would trade 15 freshmen missing orientation for 10 million+ dollars ?????

Rice classes start on the 21st.
The game would probably be played on Saturday the 26th in Australia (Friday evening, the 25th in the US), if I had to guess.
