This looks like a classic example of what others are talking about relative to missing tons of marketing opportunities. Why does it seem we're always a step behind everyone else?

We are way behind when it comes to marketing the University. Even the Universities slogan of "Idea Fusion" is pitiful. ODU needs to develop a marketing strategy that includes promoting the wonderful things the University continues to accomplish and start to build pride in our University. I have traveled all over Va. in the last month. I have seen VT, UVA, JMU, VCU, CNU, RU, and GMU window stickers in that order pretty much everywhere i went. I only saw 1 window ODU sticker north of Williamsburg. Also, in this area...VT, UVA, CNU, and RU dominate. We have no school pride and no marketing strategy to promote school pride.

Forget about it. ODU has no interest in getting itself on a state-wide level as many peer universities do. Everything we do is local to the 757 which is frustrating to those of us that decide to move on a make a living in other locales. We have to have school pride that swims against the lack of marketing current created by ODU. Our U does nothing to market itself for statewide growth and engagement and that includes the easy stuff--buying TV and online ads, SEO, SEM, online behavioral marketing, etc. Hell, we're the only VA public that still isn't made available for ODU alumni on a Maryland tag. We just let VCU and JMU do all that stuff.

Sadly, its been that way for decades. I have no idea why the university administration seems content with the way things are in that regard, but thats how it is. We should saturate the area from Emporia to Petersburg to Toano and Gloucester east with ODU signage, public relations and community service efforts and high school programs and recruiters. Then we should have strategic placements and programs in the rest of the state, with an emphasis in Richmond and NoVa. It's as if ODU recruiters only think we can draw within the readership area of the Va Pilot. ODU is a NATIONAL university according to USNWR. We don't even market ourselves like a true state university in most cases. If we want to rise in our academic perception, we have to act like we matter. We have to increase our pool of applicants and we have to make an impact, and make that impact known around the state. Its completely embarrassing for GMU and even CNU and Radford to be more known around the state than ODU. Averett, Longwood and Ferrum may be next. We're supposed to be a research university comparable to VT. Its about time we act like it and demand the funding and state support to be at least the second best engineering/technology/science school in Virginia.

While I agree that it would be nice to market more intensely in other parts of the State, you need to look at the whole picture.
ODU lies in one of the most populated parts of the State. We just don't have the dorm capacity yet to allow a shift of in-state tuition payers. If we are going to accept in-state tuition, it is in our best interest right now to accept a certain number of commuters. It was only a few years ago that we achieved "residential status", meaning that we finally reached a certain threshold of the number of on-campus beds. As we increase our housing supply, we can expand our reach.

RE: ODU Merchandise
We might be talking about two different things here. I was thinking more in terms of a general public awareness of the school and its athletic programs as opposed to active student recruiting. I have no idea how the Admin. looks at recruiting. I'm sure a healthy dose of out of state tuition payers is desirable, but I have no idea how many we have or want.Maybe they don't see any reason to advertise for students. That's not the same thing as advertising for brand awareness.

I agree. I didn't think "Modern Thinking for a Modern Mind" was too bad though. At least it emphasized "Modern" which is reflected in our campus and our leanings toward science and technology and "thinking" which is what any good college should prepare students to do.

We could do some good by cutting the number of commuters anyway. That would allow our student/faculty ratio to rise, increase our selectivity, and free up some resources. Is it ethical to hold commuters to higher admissions standards? Say 3.0 gpa minimum for on campus, and a 3.3 for commuters. The campus has no more room to grow, so its time to focus on improving quality, not quantity. and actively get more students from other parts of the state. That will do wonders for the university and its statewide reputation and interest.

An ODU with 20,000 students including 15,000 traditional aged on-campus or near campus undergrads that are intelligent and focused on learning would be transformational.

It's sad I see more advertising from UMUC here in Hampton Roads than ODU.

I do get Adsense ads for ODU, so that's nice. :(

The way I see it, an attempt to recruit students is done typically on a high school campus or by inviting prospects to the school. There they are introduced to specific programs and life style opportunities. Brand awareness is much less targeted and does not identify specific academic programs. The UVA logo found on clothing in a high class store tends to suggest UVA is high class. It's subtle but the message is loud and clear. UVA is upper crust and will open those doors for you.

Advertise and market more and become more selective with with admissions. That then solves the issue with who gets our limited on campus dorms. Instead the University is more concerned with diversity vs selecting the best and brightest.

You're kidding right? CNU and Radford? Dominate? What exactly are they dominating? A CNU car sticker is an aberration in South Hampton Roads, the only thing rarer is a Radford sticker. Meanwhile I pass five houses on my street in extreme east Norfolk/almost Virginia Beach with ODU stickers on the cars or a flag in the yard not counting mine. It is not a long street. To paraphrase Mark Twain: "The reports of our lack of school pride have been greatly exaggerated."

I think the last time I was in a Cracker Barrel was when the only one in VA was on 95. It was magical.
