Chace Sarchet fits that bill. Set Weatherford JUCO's RBI record a year ago with 68. See below for article that was posted earlier. Has 10 HRs and 48 RBIs thus far.

http://www.weatherforddemocrat.com/sport...e45f9.html

Although, Brian Smith was another big (6'3, 230) outfielder from a JUCO who barely contributed during his two years here. But there have been JUCO guys like Jared Gayhart who were also great bats for us. So goes both ways, like with everything else.

While Brian Smith never panned out, Kirby Taylor became a very productive hitter for us his second year on the team. As for Gayhart, he was a bit of a special case, as we recruited him, but had no spot for him out of high school (with Dodson, Luna, Henley, etc.) already everyday starters. We suggested he go to San Jac for a year or two until we had an opening.

Interesting, didn't know that about Gayhart. Kirby was great, just hoping this guy turns out to be a strong power hitter for us a la Aquino and Ewing.

Wasn't Brewer a big power guy in HS? And a highly touted recruit....it seemed like USM had a ton of JUCO guys just like their football team. With OG's history at San Jac it's a shame we haven't had a steady stream of guys from there lately.

Glad to see we have 1 JUCO guy coming though.

Kirby wasn't a traditional JUCO guy, as he played at A&M his freshman year before doing a year at San Jac.

Did you even bother to read the above post and article which highlights an incoming transfer from Weatherford College. Power-hitting OFer.

Nope. Sure didn't.

I will do better next time in order to meet your high expectations, Walt.

I saw that San Jac is ranked right around #1 in the nation this year and has gotten some press for their amount of talent. You have got to think that the coaches have given those guys a look and they either A) are not what we are looking for on the field or B) are unlikely to have the grades for Rice.

I hope this is the case, as overlooking what is essentially homegrown talent would be unfortunate.

On the Weatherford roster, Chase's parents are listed as Wayne and Paige Sarchet. Will Flemon's wife is Paige's sister, maiden name: Lori Stark.

I think Wayne's full name may be Donald Wayne Sarchet ... and Paige's is Paige Marie Stark Sarchet.

I didn't find any articles about Paige's basketball play.

Or they were sent there by a specific school which will pick them up at the proper time.

I'm guessing B) since Wayne Graham had 13 players transfer to Rice during his eleven year tenure at San Jac North.

and more that qualified under Wayne Graham's tutelage at San Jac (1989 team comes to mind) but were not recruited by rice.

Wayne Graham kind of has a clue.

I didn't think this deserved its own thread, but was still interesting. 2015 Rice recruit Stone Garrett, who ended up signing after being drafted, received a knife injury from a minor league teammate. Wouldn't have happened if he had gone to Rice ... and Rice would have had a power hitter this year!

This is one of those 8th round draft choices that did not sign with us that has hurt the skill level of the team. I kind of feel like when we were making our CWS runs, kids drafted in the 8th round would come to Rice. I get James Taillon not coming; it is these that are more vexing.

Agreed. Rice has been losing more players to the draft the last ~5 years than we used to. It used to be a rarity.

By design perhaps? Maybe these kids are using the opportunity of a Rice scholarship offer as leverage and validation that they are draft worthy? And to add fuel to the fire, perhaps scouts/teams are justifying drafting them based upon a respect of the talent evaluation of Coach Graham.

$$$$. As Rice gets more expensive, partial scholarships are less attractive.

Very true. When we were regulars in Omaha Rice tuition was probably half of what it is today.

Under Gillis there was an active effort to control tuition costs, after that it was decided to have a high retail price( think of cadillac) then give financial aid( cadillac has cheap leases, etc)
