BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE EXPANSION
UPDATE: Longwood joins Big South Conference
[Image: longwood%2Blancers.jpeg]

FARMVILLE, Va. --
Longwood University on Monday afternoon announced at an on-campus press conference that it will become the Big South Conference’s 12th member on July 1. The league also includes Virginia schools VMI, Radford and Liberty.

The Lancers have competed on the Division I level since 2007, but have done so as an independent. Longwood’s inclusion in the Big South will limit travel time and allow access to league championships and automatic bids to NCAA championships, among other advantages

Now that Coastal Carolina is leaving should they make Kennessaw State a full member?

The BSC has major problems now. One of it's top programs is leaving plus a football member. And Liberty is wanting to get out as soon as possible. To keep the conference intact, I believe they would take anyone at this point, as full or football only members.

RE: BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE EXPANSION
How about this:
Campbell, Charleston Southern, Gardner Webb, Jacksonville, Kennessaw State, Liberty, Monmouth, Presbyterian, Stetson for football?

Chuck South, Kennessaw South, Liberty, Monmouth, Presby and Gardner Webb at present. Some posters from West Georgia have promoted them as a member. They do have a 10,000, and from the web, they do seem possible as a candidate. Stetson is in Deland, FL and does have an upside. I'm lukewarm on Campbell.

Campbell is already a member of the conference for all other sports.

Could Campbell potentially drop any men's sports to reinvest in football? It looks like they have ten men's sports, so if they drop soccer, wrestling, indoor track, and outdoor track, that keeps them at six men's sports and frees up 26.4 scholarships - Campbell would need 5.1 more (50% of 63 = 31.5) for football to count towards Division I membership requirements, and 30.6 more to count towards bowl eligibility for their FBS opponents.

What's taking so long? I would have been on the phone with Kennessaw State, Jacksonville, Stetson yesterday.

There needs to be a little time to let the dust settle from CCU's departure, and a gauge of how long Monmouth stays, and what D2 moves ups are interested, and if any MEAC teams want to join the BSC, which is likely the only other FCS conference which may be attracted to the BSC. Lots of moving parts now that will come clearer into focus in the near future.

When do the MEAC and Big South set their conference football schedules? This could drag into March or April and still be effective for the 2016-17 academic year (the first year without Coastal).

Hampton University would be a great add!!!

Good in football/hoops. Good recruiting area. Another beach to visit - buckroe beach. Even a nice place to host the conference tournament.

I hope that the Big South makes this happen!

Wouldn't Hampton be taking a pay cut if they did that?

Probably not. The only real downfall is if alumni revolt against the decision and football attendance and donations drop substantially. The Big South in could offer marginally better travel (no conference games in south Georgia or northeast Florida) but that alone wouldn't be a reason to move.

Big South Football 2017?

Monmouth (football only)
Liberty
Gardner-Webb
Campbell
Presbyterian
Charleston Southern
North Alabama (football only)
Kennesaw State (football only)
Jacksonville (football only)

If Jacksonville leaves the Pioneer League, Stetson may also not be far behind.

The Pioneer League will live on, with Butler, Davidson, Dayton, Drake, Marist, Morehead State, and Valparaiso holding down the fort.

In the event the PFL disbands, Marist would probably head to the NEC (low-scholarship league), Morehead State would find a get its football program into the OVC with its other sports. Davidson would probably wind up in the Big South. The four Midwestern schools would probably try to affiliate with either the MVFC (legally separate from the MVC, but of course Drake would head there) or OVC (which would still have two non-football members).

The only members that post on the Big South boards are Liberty. Others would be welcomed, if they exists.
