Good Idea for a Media Story
If anyone from the local media wants a good news story during the build up to football, why not go interview Paul Stanton and Dave Mullins on whether they are surprised or not with the public and student response to the return of ETSU Football? Seems like a great idea for a story as many would be curious to hear their perspective given the predictions made 10 years ago.

It is, and neither would do it unless it could be done in a negative context.

What would be great would be one of those long "Oral History" articles of the last 15 years. Try to get people like Todd Stansbury, Paul Hamilton, Gerald Sensabaugh, Jerry Robertson, Kim Reece, Dr. Noland, Dr. Sander, Stanton, Mullins, all the people involved back then and now. Even people like Bill Meade and Kenny Hawkins. It would be an amazing piece. Even if you couldn't get Stanton and Mullins (I also doubt they will ever talk about it again unless they can somehow be proven right) you could find some of the old quotes they had and put them in the article (like Stanton's "you will see more and more teams drop football" quote).

RE: Good Idea for a Media Story
Love your guys' enthusiasm for ETSU football, but the fight is over. It's back. Stop dwelling on the past, and maybe show some better respect than to think two high level former officials should sit through their own special muckraking session.

I'm more concerned that I've paid 4 years worth of increased student fees now, but can't even get a student ticket to the first game. If we knew students support it, why weren't MORE tickets made available to this primary stakeholder that has INVESTED up front?

See, you can spin things however you want. Flame away.

I agree some temporary bleachers need to be moved in to allow more students and fans in. Atleast 500 more seats.

That administration spread misinformation for over 10 years that still gets reported as facts to this day. The whole story has NEVER been told in the traditional outlets in the Tri-Cities. Once that happens then maybe people would be more willing to let it go.

It's also hard to not dwell in the past when our main rivals 15-20 years ago all passed us by while we had to create pseudo rivalries with Jacksonville and other A-Sun afterthoughts. Seeing App State beat Michigan while we were slumming in the A-Sun and having Mullins say things like "this was the best year in ETSU athletics history" is hard to let go.

Should have got in line earlier is all I can tell you. They released the information on how to get tickets weeks ago. I wish they would bring in some temporary seats or something but it is what it is.

Also, if I hear of someone having an extra ticket I will let you know. As of now though I have had people hitting me up so this one may be hard to get.

RE: Good Idea for a Media Story
I walk the loop around Science Hill regularly and noticed yesterday that temporary bleachers have been placed in the scoreboard end zone. They are small but would accommodate several hundred fans. There is plenty of room for more bleachers throughout the stadium and the grassy hillside beside the home stands could fit lots of people if needed. They need to explore that and the publicIze the heck out of it.

As for the Stanton idea03-puke I've heard secondary info that he has been trash talking football while trying to raise money for the arts center. Only hearsay but it wouldn't surprise me. Let's never speak of him again.

They will/have temporary seating for students, end zone and hill next to baseball field. Remember, the fire marshall is the last word on how many seats are allowed inside the stadium.

Enough about the The Dark Times, let's look to the future, and also I'm wondering when standing-room tickets will go on sale?

Sander said in one of those from the dome discussions that they hope to add 500 to 800 more seats.

This was more in response to the JC Press "Question of the week." I should have posted it there. They keep trying to dig up dirt, but don't want to ask their buddies the tough questions.

LOL, they've got ONE TICKET for sale on stubhub for $286!

Whoever said I should have gotten in line sooner, it was an impossibility. Tickets were gone 3 hours in on a Monday. I work full-time regular business hours and take night classes. Make more student tickets available. I have every right to complain having paid $1000 now in increased student fees to support the return of football.

Good Idea for a Media Story
I was under the impression that a lot of schools have an athletic fee yet still make students pay for tickets. Not saying that's fair but putting it out there.

RE: Good Idea for a Media Story
Science Hill is only so big. They are bringing in extra seating, but logistically, that can only increase capacity a bit. I think that the department thought they were estimating high for the seats to save for students, while balancing the need to generate income with paid seats. The interest in ticket sales overall seemed to be a lot more than expected.

And while it sucks for those that couldn't get tickets, for the sake of the naysayers, doesn't it look better to have an overabundance of desire for the seats, than not being able to get students to come for free?

RE: Good Idea for a Media Story
Oh, it sure does look great, and I'm ecstatic for it. But spare me the "other schools' students still have to pay" because those other schools include UT and 100,000 capacity professional grade stadiums. In consolation, I'll settle for no more negativity about the absence of football, past "regime", etc. While I was paying that $1000 over 4 yrs time (3 yrs from loans!) I was matriculating from the Honors Scholars program that Stanton supported wisely and earnestly, working on MBA work, receiving a Quillen Scholarship, and much more. All without football. And you can damn well bet I would have enjoyed football, too, but that wasn't a detractor from my education.

My rantings are about spin. I'll shut up if you shut up. We have to meet at the middle now and be respectful of our institution and past leaders--the uni didn't burn to the ground.

Except Dave Mullins. Totally deserves it! :)

Please don't post anymore if you're going to defend those idiots. We are playing catch up to schools that weren't even on the map twenty years ago.

Football has and always will be a contentious subject at ETSU. It started when they cut a team in decline. The new team only has my best wishes. But since we are making demands of strangers, name one school that surpassed us academically as a result of football before you call anyone an idiot from the safety of your anonymous computer screen. The ball's got a lot of spin on it at ETSU, both sides of the field.

It was a contentious subject because the old admin made it one. I was there when they dropped the program in 2003 and when they put on that facade of a student vote in 2007.

As far as "name one school that surpassed us academically as a result of football" I can't tell you; I don't keep up with that. Maybe you can tell us who we passed up academically because we dropped football? I can tell you that we were surpassed by MANY schools in athletics. We are the only school that I can think of that moved DOWN to the Atlantic Slum and were making that transitional conference a home.

The supposed goal of dropping football was not to make ETSU better academically, it was supposed to make us better in the other sports; namely men's and women's basketball.

If you are a fan of the old admin because of what they done for you academically, that's fine. But considering this is "The Official Forums of ETSU Athletics" I wouldn't hold your breath on finding many people who agree with you.

RE: Good Idea for a Media Story
The athletic side of the coin is there. And people love to see it spin when they describe the great downfall of ETSU. Football and academics nationwide was a contentious gridlock well before ETSU, thank you very much.

EDIT: I'm letting myself go with this one. The original point was something like, to summarize, football supporters should celebrate the victory in its return rather than ridicule the former opposition. It's called the higher road. Same to the naysayers - lose with dignity.
