What Battle or Conflict Stands Out in History?
Many battles and conflicts were significant in shaping world history and left lasting marks. Others had less historical impacts but were notable in their own right. For me, the Six-Day War fought between Israel and the Arab States of Egypt, Jordan and Syria from June 5 to June 10, 1967, stands out on so many different levels. Tensions had been building in the region since the 1956 Suez Canal conflict and Israel determined that a pre-emptive strike was necessary against the Arab alliance as a means of survival. Israel was outnumbered almost 2.5:1 in ground force troops but ended up routing the Arabs in six days. The result was Israel captured and expanded its territory approximately three times the area that stood before the war began and an estimated 21,000 Arabs were killed with only 1,000 Israeli casualties. Gradually, most of the captured territory was exchanged for peace agreements with Egypt and Syria but we all know that peace has been temporary and sporadic mainly due to disputes over territorial boundaries and land rights. This has added to the historical hatred between Israel and its neighbors with the birth of modern terrorism as a result. Our support of Israel as an allied sovereign nation has also drawn us into the line of fire for many Muslim nations and terror groups that played a significant role in 9/11. On a side note, Yitzhak Rabin and Ariel Sharon were notable Israeli Commanders during the Six-Day War that served as future Prime Ministers of Israel.

Which battles or conflicts stand out for you and why?

It doesn't have a modern day impact but it shows the determination against all odds that humans possess. The battle of the bulge a severely out-manned and outgunned 101st battalion vs the remaining might of the Nazi's.

They went through hellish circumstances and managed to hold off one of the largest offensives since the beginning of the war.

Thermopylae

A small force of Greeks held off a Persian army that outnumbered them better than 100-1. This led to the rise of the Greek society which our own society is modeled upon, as is most of the rest of the modern world.

I knew this would come up. I didn't want to say it but yes it was a significant battle but it has gotten way blown out of proportion.

Yes there was only 300 Spartan warriors but each of those spartan warriors had their squires and assistants who would help out during the battle by being an auxiliary force. On top of that there were a significant number of Thebans, Athenians and many other Greek city-states represented.

Still they were outnumbered but not to the extent that is widely guessed.

The Greeks were vastly outnumbered. There were a few thousand Greeks (4000-7000, depending) against a Persian army numbering anywhere between 100,000-200,000, depending on which historian does the counting.

That's not a small thing, when you can send a large number of men after each single Greek. And this was an old style battle, when the fighting was done up close and personal. The fact that you dismiss it shows you really don't understand the realities of this kind of war.
